The Universal Plate Revisited

The universal plate devised by Ali Ibn Khalaf al-Saydalini is a universal instrument of the 11th century al-Andalus. Among the Alfonsine Libros del Saber de Astronomia,there is a book which includes the treatise on its construction, the author of which is Isl)aq b. Sld (Rabiyag)a collaborator of the King, and the treatise on the use which seems to be a translation from a lost original Arabic written by Ibn Khalaf. Although both treatises have been partially studied previously, there were many questions still unsolved. This paper presents new data regarding the morphology of the instrument, confirms the consistency between the description of the shape of the rete as described in both treatises, which had been questioned, and gives two chapters analysing the use of the matter in conjunction with the rete

Thrips (Insecta: Thysanoptera) in cherry orchards in Mendoza, Argentina

En las últimas temporadas se ha relacionado la presencia de trips con daños observados en cerezas en Mendoza, Argentina. Los daños serían producidos por la oviposición de estos insectos sobre frutos pequeños. El objetivo del trabajo fue comparar la evolución de poblaciones de las especies de trips en dos montes frutales con diferente manejo de malezas. Se tomaron muestras de malezas y de flores de cerezo en los dos montes y se analizó la evolución de las poblaciones de trips. Tres especies de trips fueron frecuentes en flores de cerezo en ambos montes: Frankliniella australis, F. occidentalis y Thrips tabaci. F. australis es la de mayor reproducción de las tres. No se observaron diferencias consistentes en cuanto al número de trips por flor de cerezo en ambas fincas y esto puede atribuirse a que la abundancia de dichos insectos en las flores de cerezo depende de otras variables tales como densidad de plantación, aporte por migración de áreas vecinas además de los niveles de infestación de malezas en el cultivo.In the last seasons the presence of trips has been related to damages observed on cherries in Mendoza, Argentina. The damages would be produced by the oviposition of these insects on small fruits. The objective of the work was to compare the evolution of populations of the present species of trips in two orchards with different weeds handling. Samples were taken from weeds and flowers of cherry tree in two orchards with different weeds handling and the evolution of the populations of trips was analyzed. Three species of thrips were frequent in flowers of cherry tree in crops: Frankliniella australis, F. occidentalis and Thrips tabaci. These species reproduce in their flowers, being F. australis the species that reproduces more of the three. Consistent differences as far as the number of trips by flower of cherry tree in both property were not observed. El análisis de la crisi IV de la tercera parte de El Criticón, El mundo descifrado muestra los artificios discursivos puestos en juego por el narrador para lograr uno de sus objetivos básicos: impresionar para recordar. El objetivo de este trabajo es poner en primer plano algunos de estos procedimientos ligados a la referencia en el contexto del mundo al revés. De esa forma se procura lograr el apoyo textual necesario para reflexionar sobre las resonancias semánticas del tiempo y el espacio en el discurso, cifra del mundo vivido por el hombre. The analysis of the crisi IV in the third part of El Criticón shows the discursive devices the narrator uses in order to achieve one of his basic aims: to surprise into remembrance. This paper points out some of the techniques linked to reference in the world upside-down context, so that semantics of time and space, measure of man's world, become evident

La figura del pastor en dos sonetos místicos de Lope de Vega

Se estudia cómo la figura de Cristo Pastor en busca de la oveja aparece una y otra vez en distintos momentos en El peregrino en su patria y en la poesía religiosa de Lope. La lírica religiosa de Lope mantiene la capacidad de conmover al lector ya en metro italiano, ateniéndose a los rigores de la retórica poética, ya en metro más castizo con la frescura de la voz popular entrecruzada con la tradición medieval de la serranilla y los juegos barrocos del lenguaje conceptista. It is studied how the figure of Christ as the Shepherd looking for the sheep appears once and again on different moments in El peregrino en su patria and Lope’s religious poetry. Lope’s religious lyric poetry maintains the ability of moving the reader either on Italian meter, abiding by the rigors of the poetic rhetoric, either in a more traditional meter with the freshness of the popular voice intertwined with the Medieval tradition of the serranilla and the baroque effects of the language of concepts
