    Forests and Hydrological Services: Reconciling public and science perceptions

    This paper compares and contrasts the science and public perceptions of the role of forests in relation to water quantity (annual and seasonal runoff and recharge) and erosion. It is suggested that the disparity between the two perceptions needs to be addressed before we are in a position to devise and develop financing mechanisms for the conservation and protection of indigenous forests. Examples are given of three ‘interactive’ forest hydrology research programmes: in the UK, South Africa and Panama. Through the involvement of stakeholder groups, often with representatives comprising both the science and public perceptions, interactive research programmes were designed not only to derive new research findings but also to achieve better ‘ownership’ and acceptance of research findings by the stakeholders. Following this approach, a new programme of research is outlined, aimed at improving our knowledge of forest impacts on seasonal flows and which represents DFID’s contribution to the UN Year of Mountains, 2002. It is concluded that to move towards a reconciliation of the different perceptions and to connect policy with science will require further research to understand how the ‘belief’ systems underlying the science and public perceptions have evolved, and better dissemination of research findings.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

    Hydrological impacts of invasive alien plants

    It is now well recognised that invasive alien species, particularly tree species, often have much increased water usage compared with native vegetation. Perhaps less well understood are the reasons for this increased water use and whether such increases should be expected from all species of invading alien trees under all environmental conditions. This paper examines the reasons for increased water use from trees as compared with short crops. From a knowledge of these reasons and a knowledge of the limiting processes (the Limits Concept) governing alien tree and native tree and short crop water use, (derived from case studies in India and RSA), we suggest that it is now possible to assess under what conditions high water use by aliens may occur. Inverse solutions based on knowledge of growth rates are also suggested as another approach for assessing alien and native tree water use under water limited conditions. We conclude that in dry climates the greatest increase in water use from aliens, in both absolute and percentage terms, may occur in water limited rather than riparian (water unlimited) conditions. Hydrological models which can predict the spatially distributed increase in water use by aliens within catchments, coupled with ecological models which can predict controlled and uncontrolled invasion, can assist the evaluation and design of improved cost-effective eradication programmes. Such coupled models, linked with an economic evaluation component, should indicate in what circumstances the value of the extra streamflow released may alone be sufficient to cover the costs of the eradication programme and under what circumstances the ecological (protection of indigenous communities) and other socio-economic benefits also need to be taken into account to justify the costs of the programme.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

    Stress-inducible phosphoprotein 1 (STI1) is part of the chaperone machinery, but it also functions as an extracellular ligand for the prion protein. However, the physiological relevance of these STI1 activities in vivo is unknown. Here, we show that in the absence of embryonic STI1, several Hsp90 client proteins are decreased by 50%, although Hsp90 levels are unaffected. Mutant STI1 mice showed increased caspase-3 activation and 50% impairment in cellular proliferation. Moreover, placental disruption and lack of cellular viability were linked to embryonic death by E10.5 in STI1-mutant mice. Rescue of embryonic lethality in these mutants, by transgenic expression of the STI1 gene, supported a unique role for STI1 during embryonic development. The response of STI1 haploinsufficient mice to cellular stress seemed compromised, and mutant mice showed increased vulnerability to ischemic insult. At the cellular level, ischemia increased the secretion of STI1 from wild-type astrocytes by 3-fold, whereas STI1 haploinsufficient mice secreted half as much STI1. Interesting, extracellular STI1 prevented ischemia-mediated neuronal death in a prion protein-dependent way.     Complement lectin pathway activation is associated with COVID-19 disease severity, independent of MBL2 genotype subgroups

    IntroductionWhile complement is a contributor to disease severity in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections, all three complement pathways might be activated by the virus. Lectin pathway activation occurs through different pattern recognition molecules, including mannan binding lectin (MBL), a protein shown to interact with SARS-CoV-2 proteins. However, the exact role of lectin pathway activation and its key pattern recognition molecule MBL in COVID-19 is still not fully understood.MethodsWe therefore investigated activation of the lectin pathway in two independent cohorts of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients, while also analysing MBL protein levels and potential effects of the six major single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) found in the MBL2 gene on COVID-19 severity and outcome.ResultsWe show that the lectin pathway is activated in acute COVID-19, indicated by the correlation between complement activation product levels of the MASP-1/C1-INH complex (p=0.0011) and C4d (p<0.0001) and COVID-19 severity. Despite this, genetic variations in MBL2 are not associated with susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection or disease outcomes such as mortality and the development of Long COVID.ConclusionIn conclusion, activation of the MBL-LP only plays a minor role in COVID-19 pathogenesis, since no clinically meaningful, consistent associations with disease outcomes were noted
