    A prediction approach for multichannel EEG signals modeling using local wavelet SVM

    Accurate modeling of the multichannel electroencephalogram (EEG) signal is an important issue in clinical practice. In this paper, we propose a new local spatiotemporal prediction method based on support vector machines (SVMs). Combining with the local prediction method, the sequential minimal optimization (SMO) training algorithm, and the wavelet kernel function, a local SMO-wavelet SVM (WSVM) prediction model is developed to enhance the efficiency, effectiveness, and universal approximation capability of the prediction model. Both the spatiotemporal modeling from the measured time series and the details of the nonlinear modeling procedures are discussed. Simulations and experimental results with real EEG signals show that the proposed method is suitable for real signal processing and is effective in modeling the local spatiotemporal dynamics. This method greatly increases the computational speed and more effectively captures the local information of the signal. © 2006 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Barrier height change in very thin SiO2 films caused by charge injection

    In this paper, we report an investigation of barrier height change in gate oxide caused by charge injection. By analyzing the small change in the post-stress Fowler-Nordheim (FN) tunneling current through the oxide layer, the change of the oxide barrier height due to charge injection is determined quantitatively. The barrier height changes associated with different charge-injection directions and measurement polarities for n-channel metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) are presented. For comparison a measurement on a p-channel MOSFET is also carried out. For all the cases, the barrier height changes always exhibit a power law dependence on injected charge.published_or_final_versio

    Influence of nitrogen on tunneling barrier heights and effective masses of electrons and holes at lightly-nitrided SiO2/Si interface

    We have determined both the effective masses and the barrier heights for electrons and holes in pure SiO2 and lightly nitrided oxides with various nitrogen concentrations up to 4.5 at %. In contrast to previous studies which were usually carried out by assuming a value for either the effective mass or the barrier height, this study does not make such an assumption. The approach is proven to be reliable by examining the result for the well-studied pure SiO2 thin films. It is observed that with the increase of the nitrogen concentration the effective masses increase while both the barrier heights and the energy gap decrease. © 2004 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

    Ca isotope constraints on chemical weathering processes: Evidence from headwater in the Changjiang River, China

    This study aims to clarify the relationship between chemical weathering of rocks and the carbon budget of rivers and better understand the weathering mechanisms of plateau watersheds. We chose to study the Jinsha River, which originates from the Tibetan Plateau and also is in the upper reaches of the Changjiang River. Analysis of hydrochemistry, radiogenic strontium isotope and stable calcium isotopes were conducted of the Jinsha River water samples, which were collected along its mainstream and main tributaries in the summer. The results show that the water chemistry of the mainstream waters is dominated by evaporite weathering, which have low 87Sr/86Sr values (0.7098–0.7108) and wide range of Sr contents (2.70–9.35 μmol/L). In contrast, tributaries of the Jinsha River have higher 87Sr/86Sr (0.7090–0.7157) and lower Sr contents (∼1 μmol/L). Moreover, the Ca isotopic compositions in the mainstream (0.87–1.11‰) are heavier than the tributaries (0.68–0.88‰) and could not be fully explained by the conventional mixing of different sources. We suggest that secondary carbonate precipitation fractionates Ca isotopes in the Jinsha River, and fractionation factors are between 0.99935 and 0.99963. At least 66% of Ca was removed in the mainstream of the Jinsha River through secondary mineral precipitation, and the average value is ∼35% in the tributaries. The results highlight that evaporite weathering results in more carbonate precipitation influencing Ca transportation and cycling in the riverine system constrained by stable Ca isotopic compositions and water chemistry

    Inactivation Kinetics of beta-N-Acetyl-D-glucosaminidase from Green Crab (Scylla serrata) in Dioxane Solution

In this investigation, A NAGase from green crab (Scylla serrata) was purified and the effects of dioxane on the enzyme activity for the hydrolysis of p-Nitrophenyl-N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminide (pNP-NAG) were studied. The results show that appropriate concentrations of dioxane can lead to reversible inactivation of the enzyme and the inactivation is classified as mixed type. The value of IC(50), the dioxane (inactivator) concentration leading to 50% activity lost, is estimated to be 0.68%. The kinetics of inactivation of NAGase in the appropriate concentrations of dioxane solution has been studied using the kinetic method of the substrate reaction. The rate constants of inactivation have been determined. The results showed that k(+0) is much larger than k'(+0), indicating the free enzyme molecule is more fragile than the enzyme-substrate complex in the dioxane solution. It is suggested that the presence of the substrate offers marked protection of this enzyme against inactivation by dioxane

    Byssinosis in Guangzhou, China

    Objectives - To study the prevalence of byssinosis and other respiratory abnormalities in workers exposed to cotton dust in Guangzhou in two factories that processed purely cotton. Methods - All the 1320 workers exposed were included. The controls were 1306 workers with no history of occupational dust exposure. Total dust and inhalable dust were measured by Chinese total dust sampler and American vertical elutriator respectively. A World Health Organisation questionnaire was used. Forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV 1) were measured by a Vitalograph spirometer. Results - The median inhalable dust concentrations ranged from 0.41 to 1.51 mg/m 3 and median total dust concentrations from 3.04 to 12.32 mg/m. The prevalence of respiratory abnormalities in the cotton workers were (a) typical Monday symptoms 9.0%; (b) FEV 1 fall by ≥ 5% after a shift 16.8%; (c) FEV 1 fall by ≥ 10% after a shift 4.2%; (d) FEV'q < 80% predicted 6.1%; (e) FEV 1/FVC < 75% 4.0%; (f) cough or phlegm 18.2%; (g) chronic bronchitis 10-9%; and (h) byssinosis, defined by (a) plus (b) 1.7%. With the exception of (d), most of the prevalences increased with increasing age, duration of exposure, and cumulative inhalable dust exposure. No increasing trends of respiratory abnormalities were found for current total dust, inhalable dust, and cumulative total dust concentrations. Compared with controls, after adjustment for sex and smoking, with the exception of (d), all the pooled relative risks of respiratory abnormalities were raised for cotton exposure. Conclusions - It is concluded that cumulative inhalable cotton is likely to be the cause of byssinotic symptoms, acute lung function decrements, cough, or phlegm, and chronic bronchitis.published_or_final_versio

    Synthesis, structure, and magnetism in the ferromagnet La_{3}MnAs_{5}: Well-separated spin chains coupled via itinerant electrons

    In this work, we systematically report the synthesis, structure, and magnetism of a compound of filled anti-Mn3Si5 type La3MnAs5. It crystallizes in a hexagonal structure with the space group of P63/mcm (193). The structure consists of face-sharing MnAs6 octahedral chains along the c axis, which are well separated by a large distance of 8.9913 Å, demonstrating a strong one-dimensional (1D) structural character. Physical property measurements indicate that La3MnAs5 is a ferromagnetic metal with TC ∼ 112 K. Due to the short-range intrachain spin coupling, the susceptibility deviates from the Curie-Weiss behavior in a wide temperature window and the magnetic entropy corresponding to the ferromagnetic transition is significantly lower than that expected from the fully saturated state. The magnetic critical behavior studies show that La3MnAs5 can be described by the three-dimensional Heisenberg model. The orbital hybridization between the 1D MnAs6 chain and intermediate La atom near the Fermi level reveals that the itinerant electrons play a key role in transmitting spin interaction among the MnAs6 spin chains. Our results indicate that La3MnAs5 is a rare ferromagnetic metal with well-separated spin chains, which provides a good opportunity to study the mechanism of interchain spin coupling via itinerant electrons

    Rare B Decays with a HyperCP Particle of Spin One

    In light of recent experimental information from the CLEO, BaBar, KTeV, and Belle collaborations, we investigate some consequences of the possibility that a light spin-one particle is responsible for the three Sigma^+ -> p mu^+ mu^- events observed by the HyperCP experiment. In particular, allowing the new particle to have both vector and axial-vector couplings to ordinary fermions, we systematically study its contributions to various processes involving b-flavored mesons, including B-Bbar mixing as well as leptonic, inclusive, and exclusive B decays. Using the latest experimental data, we extract bounds on its couplings and subsequently estimate upper limits for the branching ratios of a number of B decays with the new particle.
