A novel locus for autosomal recessive primary microcephaly (MCPH6) maps to 13q12.2
Key points:
âą Autosomal recessive primary microcephaly (MCPH) is a
genetic disorder in which an affected subject is born
with a head circumference >3 SD below the expected
mean and is mentally retarded.
âą We report a novel locus (MCPH6) mapped to chromosome
13q12.2 in a Brazilian family.
âą The minimal critical region spans 6 Mb between markers
AL139378GT17 and D13S1244 with a maximum
two point lod score of 6.25
Antibacterial Activity of Lantana camara Linn and Lantana montevidensis Brig Extracts from Cariri-CearĂĄ, Brazil
The use of medicinal plants with therapeutics properties represents a secular tradition in different cultures, mainly in underdeveloped countries. Lantana camara Linn and Lantana montevidensis Briq (Verbenaceae) found in tropical and subtropical areas around the world are popularly known as âcamarĂĄâ or âchumbinho.â In popular medicines, both plants are used as antipyretic and carminative and in the treatment of respiratory system infections. In this study, the antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extracts of L. camara and L. montevidensis leaves and roots against gram-positive and gram-negative strains standard and multi-resistant bacteria isolated from clinical material are presented. In order to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), the microdilution method was used. The extracts demonstrated antibacterial activity against all tested bacteria, but the L. montevidensis fresh leaves extract present the best result against P. aeruginosa (MIC 8 ÎŒg/mL) and against multi-resistant E. coli (Ec 27) (MIC 16 ÎŒg/mL). These results drive new researches with both species in order to isolate the constituents responsible for the activity

Surtos interespecĂficos de dermatomicoses por Microsporum canis e Microsporum gypseum
Dermatomycosis in domestic animals are important zoonosis in view of the fact that they maintain close contact with human beings. Seven ringworm outbreaks are here described, one of M. gypseum involving a cat and a women and the remainder of M. canis involving 20 human beings (adults, young people and children), 5 dogs, 16 cats and a gibbon-monkey (Hylobates lar).As dermatomicoses dos animais domĂ©sticos constituem zoonoses importantes, urna vez que estes mantĂȘm estreito contato com a espĂ©cie humana, dada a alta infectividade observada nesses processos.
Lepton Flavour Violating Leptonic/Semileptonic Decays of Charged Leptons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model
We consider the leptonic and semileptonic (SL) lepton flavour violating (LFV)
decays of the charged leptons in the minimal supersymmetric standard model
(MSSM). The formalism for evaluation of branching fractions for the SL LFV
charged-lepton decays with one or two pseudoscalar mesons, or one vector meson
in the final state, is given. Previous amplitudes for the SL LFV charged-lepton
decays in MSSM are improved, for instance the -penguin amplitude is
corrected to assure the gauge invariance. The decays are studied not only in
the model-independent formulation of the theory in the frame of MSSM, but also
within the frame of the minimal supersymmetric SO(10) model within which the
parameters of the MSSM are determined. The latter model gives predictions for
the neutrino-Dirac Yukawa coupling matrix, once free parameters in the model
are appropriately fixed to accommodate the recent neutrino oscillation data.
Using this unambiguous neutrino-Dirac Yukawa couplings, we calculate the LFV
leptonic and SL decay processes assuming the minimal supergravity scenario. A
very detailed numerical analysis is done to constrain the MSSM parameters.
Numerical results for SL LFV processes are given, for instance for tau -> e
(mu) pi0, tau -> e (mu) eta, tau -> e (mu) eta', tau -> e (mu) rho0, tau -> e
(mu) phi, tau -> e (mu) omega, etc.Comment: 36 pages, 3 tables, 5 .eps figure
