Efficient fully blade-coated perovskite solar cells in air with nanometer-thick bathocuproine buffer layer
Fully printed perovskite solar cells (PSCs) were fabricated in air with all constituent layers, except for electrodes, deposited by the blade coating technique. The PSCs incorporated, for the first time, a nanometer-thick printed bathocuproine (BCP) hole blocking buffer using blade coating and deposited at relative humidity up to 50%. The PSCs with a p-i-n structure (glass/indium tin oxide (ITO)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS)/CH3NH3PbI3/[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM)/BCP/Ag) delivered a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.9% on an active area of 0.5 cm2 when measured under standard test conditions. The PSCs with a blade coated BCP delivered performance of 10% and 63% higher (in relative terms) than those incorporating a spin coated BCP or without any BCP film, respectively. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed that blade coated films were more homogeneous and acted also as a surface planarizer leading to a reduction of roughness which improved BCP/Ag interface lowering charge recombination. The demonstration of 15% efficient devices with all constituent layers, including nanometer-thick BCP (∼ 10 nm), deposited by blade coating in air, demonstrates a route for industrialization of this technology
The impact of hyperhidrosis on patients' daily life and quality of life : A qualitative investigation
Background: An understanding of the daily life impacts of hyperhidrosis and how patients deal with them, based on qualitative research, is lacking. This study investigated the impact of hyperhidrosis on the daily life of patients using a mix of qualitative research methods. Methods: Participants were recruited through hyperhidrosis patient support groups such as the Hyperhidrosis Support Group UK. Data were collected using focus groups, interviews and online surveys. A grounded theory approach was used in the analysis of data transcripts. Data were collected from 71 participants, out of an initial 100 individuals recruited. Results: Seventeen major themes capturing the impacts of hyperhidrosis were identified; these covered all areas of life including daily life, psychological well-being, social life, professional /school life, dealing with hyperhidrosis, unmet health care needs and physical impact. Conclusions: Psychosocial impacts are central to the overall impacts of hyperhidrosis, cutting across and underlying the limitations experienced in other areas of life.Peer reviewe
An Interlaboratory Study on the Stability of All-Printable Hole Transport Material–Free Perovskite Solar Cells
Comparisons between different laboratories on long-term stability analyses of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is still lacking in the literature. This work presents the results of an interlaboratory study conducted between five laboratories from four countries. Carbon-based PSCs are prepared by screen printing, encapsulated, and sent to different laboratories across Europe to assess their stability by the application of three ISOS aging protocols: (a) in the dark (ISOS-D), (b) under simulated sunlight (ISOS-L), and (c) outdoors (ISOS-O). Over 1000 h stability is reported for devices in the dark, both at room temperature and at 65 degrees C. Under continuous illumination at open circuit, cells survive only for few hours, although they recover after being stored in the dark. Better stability is observed for cells biased at maximum power point under illumination. Finally, devices operate in outdoors for 30 days, with minor degradation, in two different locations (Barcelona, Spain and Paola, Malta). The findings demonstrate that open-circuit conditions are too severe for stability assessment and that the diurnal variation of the photovoltaic parameters reveals performance to be strongly limited by the fill factor, in the central hours of the day, due to the high series resistance of the carbon electrode
Atypical presentation of acute pancreatitis: a single center case-match analysis of clinical outcomes
Objective: Acute pancreatitis (AP) may present an aspecific clinical picture without abdominal symptoms (atypical AP). We compared clinical outcomes between typical and atypical AP.
Patients and methods: Thirty out of 1163 patients (2.6%) presented an atypical AP. Demographic, clinical data, laboratory and radiological findings, management type, length of hospital stay (LOS) and mortality rate were retrospectively reviewed. A case match analysis 2:1 was performed. The final groups comprised 50 typical APs (TAP group) and 25 atypical APs (AAP group).
Results: The AAP patients presented fever (36%), syncope (32%) and dyspnea (16%) as the most frequent symptoms. Laboratory values showed similarity between the two groups. We noted a comparable edematous AP rate in both groups (p=0.36). Ten (20%) TAP and 3 (12%) AAP patients needed ERCP, respectively (p=0.38). Cholecystectomy was similarly performed in both cohorts (p=0.81). One TAP patient underwent a percutaneous drainage and subsequent surgical necrosectomy compared to none in the AAP cohort (p=0.47). LOS and mortality rate were comparable (p=0.76 and 0.3, respectively).
Conclusions: Similar outcomes have been reached in the two groups. Routine evaluation of the serum amylase values fundamentally contributed to early diagnosis and appropriate treatment
A Novel Microwave Sensor to Detect Specific Biomarkers in Human Cerebrospinal Fluid and Their Relationship to Cellular Ischemia During Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair
Thoraco-abdominal aneurysms (TAAA) represents a particularly lethal vascular disease that without surgical repair carries a dismal prognosis. However, there is an inherent risk from
surgical repair of spinal cord ischaemia that can result in paraplegia. One method of reducing
this risk is cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage. We believe that the CSF contains clinically
significant biomarkers that can indicate impending spinal cord ischaemia. This work
therefore presents a novel measurement method for proteins, namely albumin, as a precursor
to further work in this area. The work uses an interdigitated electrode (IDE) sensor and
shows that it is capable of detecting various concentrations of albumin (from 0 to 100 g/L)
with a high degree of repeatability at 200 MHz (R2 = 0.991) and 4 GHz (R2 = 0.975)
(ZPID
