We show how one can compute I(E/F)\mathcal{I}(E/F), using a closed formula that we obtain from the classical theory of complex multiplication

    A quasi-Z-source-based inductive power transfer system for constant current/constant voltage charging applications

    This article proposes a quasi-Z-source (qZS)-based Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) system for Electric Vehicles (EVs) charging applications. The IPT systems use the magnetic field to transfer power between two coils wirelessly, achieving improved reliability, safety and less environmental impact. Compared to the conventional IPT system, the proposed qZS-IPT system simultaneously achieves DC/DC regulation and DC/AC conversion through a single-stage conversion, thus lowering the cost and complexity of the system. Moreover, the reliability of the system is improved thanks to the qZS network shoot-though immunity and the reduced number of switches. To ensure the battery efficient charging and long service life, the constant current/constant voltage (CC/CV) method is considered. With the proposed innovative modulation scheme, the qZS can easily change between buck and boost modes, respectively, lowering or increasing the secondary side current. A theoretical analysis is presented for system design. Simulation results based on a 25 kW (200 V/135 A) low duty EV charger are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Experimental tests are performed on a 150 W scale-down prototype to validate the analysis and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed qZS-IPT system for CC/CV chargers

    Return to work of breast cancer survivors: Perspectives and challenges for occupational physicians

    Breast cancer is one of the most common diseases worldwide, mainly affecting the female gender. Considering the increase of breast cancer incidence and the decrease of mortality due to news diagnostic and therapeutic tools, the return to work issue after treatment is going to be very common in the next years. Occupational physicians therefore need to face the return to work and the fitness for work of workers previously diagnosed with breast cancer with a sufficient cultural and technical background. In addition to individual characteristics preceding the diagnosis, clinical outcome, lifestyles and occupational variables are the most impactful factors on return to work that need to be taken into account. The aim of this work is to analyze these factors and discuss the central role of occupational physicians in the decision-making process of returning to work in breast cancer survivors

    Application of a Multiphase Interleaved DC-DC Converter for Power-To-Hydrogen Systems

    Power electronics plays a crucial role in the implementation of a clean hydrogen production system, whose last stage consists of a water electrolyzer requiring a DC power supply to be in operation. The most recent architectural solutions imply the use of an isolated DC-DC converter, collecting energy from medium voltage (MV) and delivering it to the electrolyzer. An equivalent electrical model of the electrolyzer is therefore needed, as well as an accurate design of the power converter stage, aiming at a high-efficiency operation of the electrolyzer's cells and at a low-ripple supply current, to avoid premature degradation. This work investigates a full-bridge step-down isolated DC-DC converter, focusing on the opportunity of a multiphase interleaved configuration, particularly convenient for the proposed application. The considered maximum power level is 400 kW, representing a small-scale example of an industrial water electrolyzer supplied by a maximum DC voltage of 700 V. Input DC voltage is 7 kV.     In these days of 2020, tests for the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2, and their use in the context of health surveillance of workers, are becoming popular. Nevertheless, their sensitivity and specificity could vary on the basis of the type of test used and on the moment of infection of the subject tested. The aim of this viewpoint paper is to make employers, workers, occupational physicians, and public health specialists think about the limits of diagnostic tests currently available, and the possible implication related to the erroneous and incautious assignment of “immunity passports” or “risk-free certificates” to workers during screening campaigns in workplaces

    Stress among medical students: Factor structure of the University Stress Scale among Italian students

    Objectives The main purpose of the current study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the University Stress Scale (USS) among Italian medical students. Design, setting and participants A cross-sectional observational study based on data from an online cross-sectional survey from 11 to 23 December 2018. A total of 1858 Italian medical students participated in the study. Outcome measures We measured perceived stress among medical students using the USS, the Effort-Reward Imbalance Student Questionnaire (ERI-SQ) and the Kessler-10 (K10). Results Results showed that a bifactor-Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling solution provided excellent levels of fit to the data. Our results suggest that the modified version of 19 items of the Italian version of the USS does not have a simple unidimensional structure. Overall, an inspection of ancillary indices (omega indices, ECV and percentage of uncontaminated correlations) revealed that these were too low to suggest the use of the USS as a composite measure of university stress. We tested an alternative unidimensional short form (eight items; USS-S) that assessed all the five sources of stress. This version provided a good fit to the data. Evidence of convergent validity of the USS-S was observed by analysing the correlations between the USS and ERI-SQ (ranging from-0.34 to 0.37, all p<0.01). Finally, based on the clinical cut-off recommended on the K10, results from receiver operating characteristic showed that considering the clinical cut-off of the USS is 7.5 and that 59.70% of medical students reported stress levels in the clinical range. Conclusion Finally, our results showed a lack of support for using the USS to measure a general university stress factor, as the general USS factor accounted for little variance in our sample. In this sense, stress scores among Italian students can be better assessed by the use of the USS-S

    Automotive Battery Charging based on Efficient Capacitive Power Transfer

    Isolated power converters find application in different fields of electric mobility, such as battery charging, where galvanic insulation between on-board storage system and electrical grid is required. Conventional isolated systems are based on the use of transformers, which have the drawback to be bulky and expensive. Nevertheless, insulation implemented by capacitances can be attractive due to the recent technological advances, contributing to increasingly compact, cheap and efficient converters. In this paper, an isolated power converter based on capactive power transfer (CPT), along with the switched capacitor concept, is proposed. GaN FETs are employed as switching power devices in order to handle high operation frequencies with limited power losses. In this work a 500 kHz switching frequency has been selected, with notable benefits brought to the overall power converter in terms of compactness. The developed prototype has been experimentally tested according to a target power level of 3 kW, to prove the proper operation of the proposed converter. The experimental tests have demonstrated a power transfer efficiency as high as 95%

    effect of a nicotine free inhalator as part of a smoking cessation programme

    Smoking-cessation drugs are inadequate at addressing the behavioural component of tobacco dependence. Nicotine-free inhalators are plastic devices that may provide a coping mechanism for conditioned smoking by replacing some of the rituals associated with smoking gestures. This study assessed the effect of using a nicotine-free inhalator to improve success in a cessation programme. At baseline, 120 smokers attending a smoking-cessation programme were assessed for their sociodemographic factors, smoking history, depression, physical and behavioural dependence, and motivation. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups, nicotine-free inhalator group (PAIPO; Echos Srl, Milan, Italy) versus reference group. For the whole sample, no significant difference was found in quit rates at 24 weeks between the PAIPO group and the reference group. However, the quit rate in the PAIPO group (66.7%) was more than three-fold higher than the reference group (19.2%) for those individuals with high Glover–Nilsson Smoking Behavioural Questionnaire (GN-SBQ) scores at baseline. The results of the logistic model analysis indicate that a high GN-SBQ score is a strong independent predictor for successful quitting at 24 weeks (OR 8.88; 95% CI 2.08–37.94) in the PAIPO group. Nicotine-free inhalators may be beneficial when used in the context of smoking-cessation interventions, particularly for those smokers for whom handling and manipulation of their cigarettes plays an important part in the ritual of smoking

    Long-Term COVID: Case Report and Methodological Proposals for Return to Work

    Almost two years after the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the knowledge of which in the infectious and therapeutic spheres is constantly evolving, attention paid to the medicolegal aspects linked to this emergency phenomenon has mainly focused on the liability implications falling on healthcare personnel. With regard to the medicolegal assessment of the outcomes of COVID-19 illness, although it is a procedure that is commonly used, and although references in the assessment tables in force have been adhered to, a specific assessment protocol has not been standardized that takes into account, from an objective point of view, the degree of severity of the long-term residual outcomes and their impact on the social and working lives of subjects. This shortcoming appears to be attributable to the immediate need to categorize the results of COVID-19, but, in our opinion, it deserves an in-depth study and protocols to enable evaluation committees to draw up an assessment as precisely as possible and that is free of gaps, which could be the subject of legal disputes. The aim of the present work, in light of a worldwide problem, is to arrive at specific and univocal evaluation criteria for COVID-19 disease outcomes, applicable in different operational contexts of reemployment
