The pion electromagnetic form-factor in a QCD-inspired model
We present detailed numerical results for the pion space-like electromagnetic
form factor obtained within a recently proposed model of the pion
electromagnetic current in a confining light-front QCD-inspired model. The
model incorporates the vector meson dominance mechanism at the quark level,
where the dressed photon with decay in an interacting quark-antiquark

Timelike and spacelike hadron form factors, Fock state components and light-front dynamics
A unified description of spacelike and timelike hadron form factors within a
light-front model was successfully applied to the pion. The model is extended
to the nucleon to study the role of pair production and of
nonvalence components in the nucleon form factors. Preliminary results in the

Electromagnetic Hadron Form Factors and Higher Fock Components
Investigation of the spacelike and timelike electromagnetic form factors of
hadrons, within a relativistic microscopical model characterized by a small set
of hypothesis, could shed light on the components of hadron states beyond the
valence one. Our relativistic approach has been successfully applied first to
the pion and then the extension to the nucleon has been undertaken. The pion
case is shortly reviewed as an illustrative example for introducing the main
ingredients of our approach, and preliminary results for the nucleon in the

Electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in spacelike and timelike regions
An approach for a unified description of the nucleon electromagnetic form
factors in spacelike and timelike regions is presented. The main ingredients of
our model are: a Mandelstam formula for the matrix elements of the nucleon
electromagnetic current; a 3-dimensional reduction of the problem on the
Light-Front performed within the so-called {\tt Propagator Pole Approximation}
({\bf PPA}), which consists in disregarding the analytical structure of the
Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes and of the quark-photon vertex function in the
integration over the minus components of the quark momenta; a dressed
photon vertex in the channel, where the photon is described by its

The biomedical results from an experiment on a monkey subjected to space flight conditions are reported. A background history of the development and testing of an experiment system designed to permit measurement of physiological parameters in subhuman primates during continuous, comfortable, couch restraint for periods of up to 30 days is reviewed. Of major importance in the experimental design of the system was the use of a fiberglass pod, which could be sealed and subdivided into upper and lower parts, to monitor and control the physiological responses for various parts of the animal's body. The experiment was conducted within the Spacelab Simulator for a period of 11 days. Data recorded includes: Spacelab Simulator cabin temperature; ventilation rate; pod internal temperature; fraction percent oxygen; fraction percent carbon dioxide; oxygen consumption rate; carbon dioxide production rate; respiratory quotient; intrathoracic temperature; heart rate; mean aortic pressure; mean ventricular pressure; diurnal variation of parameters measured; comparison of mean preflight, flight, and postflight values of the parameters measured; and correlation matrix for the parameters measured
Under Pressure: Quenching Star Formation in Low-Mass Satellite Galaxies via Stripping
Recent studies of galaxies in the local Universe, including those in the
Local Group, find that the efficiency of environmental (or satellite) quenching
increases dramatically at satellite stellar masses below ~ . This suggests a physical scale where quenching transitions from a
slow "starvation" mode to a rapid "stripping" mode at low masses. We
investigate the plausibility of this scenario using observed HI surface density
profiles for a sample of 66 nearby galaxies as inputs to analytic calculations
of ram-pressure and viscous stripping. Across a broad range of host properties,
we find that stripping becomes increasingly effective at $M_{*} < 10^{8-9}\
{\rm M}_{\odot}n_{\rm halo} <
10^{-3.5}{\rm cm}^{-3}$), we find that stripping is not fully effective;
infalling satellites are, on average, stripped of < 40 - 70% of their cold gas
reservoir, which is insufficient to match observations. By including a host
halo gas distribution that is clumpy and therefore contains regions of higher
density, we are able to reproduce the observed HI gas fractions (and thus the
high quenched fraction and short quenching timescale) of Local Group
satellites, suggesting that a host halo with clumpy gas may be crucial for
quenching low-mass systems in Local Group-like (and more massive) host halos.Comment: updated version after review, now accepted to MNRAS; Accepted 2016

Intraoperative Monitoring of the Obese Patient Undergoing Surgery: A Narrative Review
With the increasing prevalence of obesity in the population, anaesthetists must confidently manage both the pathophysiological and technical challenges presented in bariatric and non-bariatric surgery. The intraoperative period represents an important opportunity to optimise and mitigate risk. However, there is little formal guidance on what intraoperative monitoring techniques should be used in this population. This narrative review collates the existing evidence for intraoperative monitoring devices in the obese patients. Although a number of non-invasive blood pressure monitors have been tested, an invasive arterial line remains the most reliable monitor if accurate, continuous monitoring is required. Goal-directed fluid therapy is recommended by clinical practice guidelines, but the methods tested to assess this had guarded applicability to the obese population. Transcutaneous carbon dioxide (CO2) monitoring may offer additional benefit to standard capnography in this population. Individually titrated positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) and recruitment manoeuvres improved intraoperative mechanics but yielded no benefit in the immediate postoperative period. Depth of anaesthesia monitoring appears to be beneficial in the perioperative period regarding recovery times and complications. Objective confirmation of reversal of neuromuscular blockade continues to be a central tenet of anaesthesia practice, particularly relevant to this group who have been characterised as an "at risk" extubation group. Where deep neuromuscular blockade is used, continuous neuromuscular blockade is suggested. Both obesity and the intraoperative context represent somewhat unstable search terms, as the clinical implications of the obesity phenotype are not uniform, and the type and urgency of surgery have significant impact on the intraoperative setting. This renders the generation of summary conclusions around what intraoperative monitoring techniques are suitable in this population highly challenging
Ceftolozane/tazobactam for resistant drugs pseudomonas aeruginosa respiratory infections: A systematic literature review of the real-world evidence
Background: Ceftolozane/tazobactam (C/T) is a β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combination that mainly targets Gram-negative bacteria. The current international guidelines recommend including C/T treatment in the empirical therapy for hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is one of the most challenging Gram-negative bacteria. We conducted a systematic review of all cases reported in the literature to summarize the existing evidence. Methods: The main electronic databases were screened to identify case reports of patients with drug-resistant PA respiratory infections treated with C/T. Results: A total of 22 publications were included for a total of 84 infective episodes. The clinical success rate was 72.6% across a wide range of comorbidities. The 45.8% of patients treated with C/T presented colonization by PA. C/T was well tolerated. Only six patients presented adverse events, but none had to stop treatment. The most common therapeutic regimens were 1.5 g every 8 h and 3 g every 8 h. Conclusion: C/T may be a valid therapeutic option to treat multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant (XDR), pandrug-resistant (PDR), and carbapenem-resistant (CR) PA infections.
