The back cover of this book describes it as “a practical study guide to postgraduate and research students of applied translation studies.” This might give the impression that the volume is a textbook, which it is not. Rather, the book is a collection of nine separate articles. Their common denominator is that they are corpus-based or corpus-driven descriptive studies. Nevertheless, the contributions are so varied in approach and rich in information, that they can undoubtedly inspire other researchers in the field of descriptive translation studies

Projecten medische terminologie aan de Hogeschool Gent

De Faculteit Toegepaste Taalkunde van de Hogeschool Gent (en de voorgangers van de Faculteit) hebben een lange traditie van medisch terminologisch onderzoek, vaak in samenwerking met het Heymans Instituut voor Farmacologie van de Universiteit Gent. Het “Drietalig vocabularium van wetenschappelijke en populaire medische termen” van neerlandicus van Hauwermeiren uit 1986 mag wel als het startschot worden beschouwd. Ongeveer tien jaar later was de Hogeschool de belangrijkste partner in het negentalige “Multilingual glossary” dat nog steeds online staat en druk wordt geconsulteerd (http://users.ugent.be/~rvdstich/eugloss/welcome.html) - maar ook dringend aan een opfrisbeurt toe is. Ondertussen waren twee medewerkers nog gestart met de stuksgewijze vertaling van de Medical Subject Headings aan de hand van afstudeerscripties. In dit MeSH Termbase Project zijn al meer dan 150 scripties geschreven. De Vakgroep Taaltechnologie van de Faculteit heeft zich ook toegelegd op medische terminologie en op de problemen rond verstaanbaarheid van medische bijsluiters, met projecten als ABOP en OptiPIL. Momenteel zijn er ten slotte o.m. plannen om het terminologisch materiaal van verschillende projecten te bundelen in een Belgisch medisch terminologiesysteem, waarbij ook de link zou worden gelegd met bestaande classificatiesystemen

Challenges encountered during the compilation of a multilingual termbase in the domain of communication

The multilingual Electronic Lexicon of Communication Terminology (ELeCT) compiled at our universities focuses on subject fields that are in constant flux. Its authors have to deal with the challenges of new and obsolete concepts, provisional terms, competing synonyms, Anglicization, conceptual gaps and meaning shifts. The present paper illustrates these challenges with examples from the Dutch and Hungarian sections of ELeCT and takes them as a starting point for a broader discussion of principles of terminology and terminography. The examples illustrate that terminographers can and should take different decisions depending on the target users of their termbase and that in most cases they will be expected to give guidance rather than to normalize

Termbepaling : bestaat hier wel een Nederlandse term voor?

Nieuwe begrippen worden vaak eerst voorzien van een Engelse naam. In nogal wat gevallen wordt de Engelse term in eerste instantie in het Nederlands overgenomen en soms blijft hij er ook bewaard. Wanneer moeten we ons daarbij neerleggen en wanneer moeten we actie ondernemen om een volwaardig Nederlands equivalent te vinden of voor te stellen? Er wordt uitgegaan van drie scenario’s. In het eerste scenario moeten we vaststellen dat de Engelse term al ingeburgerd is en dat een poging om nog een nieuwe Nederlandse term voor te stellen verloren moeite is (voorbeeld: computer). In het tweede scenario kwam de Engelse term tot stand in onze eigen organisatie of ons eigen bedrijf. In dat geval is onze verantwoordelijkheid groot en is het het beste al in een vroeg stadium een haalbaar Nederlands equivalent voor te stellen. Het derde scenario is dat waarbij de Engelse term van buitenaf komt en er mogelijk al een voorstel tot vernederlandsing is geweest. Dat moeten we dan via geschikte bronnen nagaan. Een Nederlands equivalent maakt meer kans om ingang te vinden als er bij het proces van ‘secundaire neologie’ enkele principes in acht worden genomen.
