    Nanoscale Torsional Resonator for Polarization and Spectroscopy of Nuclear Spins

    We propose a torsional resonator that couples to the transverse spin dipole of an attached sample. The absence of relative motion eliminates a source of friction that would otherwise hinder nanoscale implementation. Enhanced spontaneous emission induced by the resonator relaxes the longitudinal spin dipole at a rate of ~1  s^(-1) in the low-temperature limit. With signal averaging, single-proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy appears feasible at ~10  mK and a high magnetic field, while single-shot sensitivity is practical for samples with at least tens of protons in a volume of ~5  nm^3

    Development of polyisocyanurate pour foam formulation for space shuttle external tank thermal protection system

    Four commercially available polyisocyanurate polyurethane spray-foam insulation formulations are used to coat the external tank of the space shuttle. There are several problems associated with these formulations. For example, some do not perform well as pourable closeout/repair systems. Some do not perform well at cryogenic temperatures (poor adhesion to aluminum at liquid nitrogen temperatures). Their thermal stability at elevated temperatures is not adequate. A major defect in all the systems is the lack of detailed chemical information. The formulations are simply supplied to NASA and Martin Marietta, the primary contractor, as components; Part A (isocyanate) and Part B (poly(s) and additives). Because of the lack of chemical information the performance behavior data for the current system, NASA sought the development of a non-proprietary room temperature curable foam insulation. Requirements for the developed system were that it should exhibit equal or better thermal stability both at elevated and cryogenic temperatures with better adhesion to aluminum as compared to the current system. Spring calving dairy cows (n = 409) on a single pasture-based commercial dairy farm were used in a completely randomized block design. Cows were assigned to 1 of 2 dietary supplements [LE-CLA (n = 203) or no supplement (control, n = 206)]. The LE-CLA cows received 51 g/d of a lipid supplement containing 5 g of both trans-10,cis-12 and cis-9,trans-11 CLA from 0 to 60 d in milk. Milk samples were collected 3 times weekly, and each sample was analyzed for progesterone to determine the interval to first ovulation and estrous cycle characteristics. Milk yield and concentrations of fat, protein, and lactose were measured every 2 wk. Cows were inseminated following visual observation of estrus. The breeding season commenced on April 8, 2009 and continued for 16 wk. Transrectal ultrasonography was carried out at 30 to 36 d and 60 to 66 d post-AI to diagnose pregnancy. The LE-CLA treatment resulted in a decrease in milk fat concentration (36.9 ± 0.06 g/kg vs. 30.7 ± 0.06 g/kg for control and LE-CLA, respectively) and yield (0.91 ± 0.02 kg/d vs. 0.84 ± 0.02 kg/d for control and LE-CLA, respectively); however, milk yield was increased by LE-CLA supplementation (24.7 ± 0.7 kg/d vs. 27.2 ± 0.7 kg/d for control and LE-CLA, respectively), resulting in no overall difference in milk energy output. No effect of LE-CLA was observed on any estrous cycle characteristics or measures of reproductive performance. These results support that in pasture-based systems of dairy production, where energy intake limits milk production, energy spared by CLA-induced milk fat depression is partitioned toward increasing milk yield rather than toward body reserves

    Mn L2,3_{2,3} edge resonant x-ray scattering in manganites: Influence of the magnetic state

    We present an analysis of the dependence of the resonant orbital order and magnetic scattering spectra on the spin configuration. We consider an arbitrary spin direction with respect to the local crystal field axis, thus lowering significantly the local symmetry. To evaluate the atomic scattering in this case, we generalized the Hannon-Trammel formula and implemented it inside the framework of atomic multiplet calculations in a crystal field. For an illustration, we calculate the magnetic and orbital scattering in the CE phase of \lsmo in the cases when the spins are aligned with the crystal lattice vector a{\vec a} (or equivalently b{\vec b}) and when they are rotated in the abab-plane by 45^{\circ} with respect to this axis. Magnetic spectra differ for the two cases. For the orbital scattering, we show that for the former configuration there is a non negligible σσ\sigma \to \sigma' (ππ\pi \to \pi') scattering component, which vanishes in the 45^\circ case, while the σπ\sigma \to \pi' (πσ\pi \to \sigma') components are similar in the two cases. From the consideration of two 90^\circ spin canted structures, we conclude there is a significant dependence of the orbital scattering spectra on the spin arrangement. Recent experiments detected a sudden decrease of the orbital scattering intensity upon increasing the temperature above the N\' eel temperature in \lsmo. We discuss this behavior considering the effect of different types of misorientations of the spins on the orbital scattering spectrum.Comment: 8 figures.     Measurement of the energy resolution and calibration of hybrid pixel detectors with GaAs:Cr sensor and Timepix readout chip

    This paper describes an iterative method of per-pixel energy calibration of hybrid pixel detectors with GaAs:Cr sensor and Timepix readout chip. A convolution of precisely measured spectra of characteristic X-rays of different metals with the resolution and the efficiency of the pixel detector is used for the calibration. The energy resolution of the detector is also measured during the calibration. The use of per-pixel calibration allows to achieve a good energy resolution of the Timepix detector with GaAs:Cr sensor: 8% and 13% at 60 keV and 20 keV, respectively

    Expression of Fas, an apoptosis-inducing receptor, in colonic epithelium is progressively reduced during malignant transformation. We have examined the human Fas gene for loss of heterozygosity (LOH) and gross rearrangements in colon tumours and matched normal mucosa. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers were designed to span a DraI restriction fragment length polymorphic site in the gene. Heterozygosity was detected in normal DNA samples by PCR amplification of the polymorphic site and restriction enzyme digestion. Thirty-eight of 88 patients (43%) with colon carcinomas were informative for the assay, and LOH was detected in 6 of the 38 (16%) corresponding tumours. Tumours from three patients with LOH did not express detectable Fas mRNA, and Fas expression was reduced or absent in 7 of 11 tumours from informative patients without LOH. Southern blotting of tumour DNA samples was used to detect rearrangement of the Fas gene, but no altered hybridization patterns were observed in 64 tumours analysed. These findings indicate that disruption of the Fas gene is not primarily responsible for the loss of Fas protein expression reported in colon cancer. We have also shown that loss of Fas gene transcription is common in these tumours, which may be due to epigenetic gene silencing
