    Media discourse on jihadist terrorism in Europe

    This article analyzes the manner in which European print media discuss jihadist terrorism in Europe. It presents key results from a qualitative analysis of media discourse following three selected attacks in seven European countries in 2010: the attack on the cartoonist Westergaard, the Yemen cargo plane plot, and the Stockholm suicide attack. The article finds that attack type is a factor shaping media discourse across different media in Europe. Considering that terrorists also aim to impact discourse for their own agenda, the article presents implications for policy reactions on the basis of attack type, and not as desired by terrorists.Publisher PD

    There are big changes coming to SNAP in Illinois. On December 31st, certain SNAP recipients will only be able to receive food assistance for a total of three months within a 36 month period, whether or not they are experiencing hunger, if they are not working at least 20 hours per week. The group of people that will be impacted by this change will be adults without work-limiting disabilities who are not currently responsible for the care of children or other family members. The people who make up this group are sometimes referred to as ABAWDs, or able-bodied adults without dependents

    Relativistic Spinor Dynamics Inducing the Extended Lorentz-Force-Like Equation

    The special relativistic dynamical equation of the Lorentz force type can be regarded as a consequence of a succession of space-time dependent infinitesimal Lorentz transformations as shown by one of us \cite{buitrago} and discussed in the introduction below. Such an insight indicates that the Lorentz-force-like equation has an extremely fundamental meaning in physics. In this paper we therefore present a set of dynamical Weyl spinor equations {\em inducing} the extended Lorentz-force-like equation in the Minowski space-time. The term extended refers to the dynamics of some additional degrees of freedom that may be associated with the classical spin namely with the dynamics of three space-like mutually orthogonal four-vectors, all of them orthogonal to the linear four-momentum of the object under consideration.Comment: 15 page

    Magnetic excitations of perovskite rare-earth nickelates: RNiO3_3

    The perovskite nickelates RNiO3_3 (R: rare-earth) have been studied as potential multiferroic compounds. A certain degree of charge disproportionation in the Ni ions has been confirmed by high resolution synchrotron power diffraction: instead of the nominal Ni3+^{3+} valence, they can have the mixed-valence state Ni(3δ)+^{(3-\delta)+} and Ni(3+δ)+^{(3+\delta)+}, though agreement has not been reached on the precise value of δ\delta (e.g. for NdNiO3_3, δ=0.0\delta=0.0 and δ=0.29\delta=0.29 were reported). Also, the magnetic ground state is not yet clear: collinear and non-collinear Ni-O magnetic structures have been proposed to explain neutron diffraction and soft X-ray resonant sccattering results in these compounds, and more recently a canted antiferromagnetic spin arrangement was proposed on the basis of magnetic susceptibility measurements. This scenario is reminiscent of the situation in the half-doped manganites. In order to gain insight into the ground state of these compounds, we studied the magnetic excitations of some of the different phases proposed, using a localized spin model for a simplified spin chain which could describe these compounds. We first analize the stability of the collinear, orthogonal, and intermediate phases in the classical case. We then explore the quantum ground state indirectly, calculating the spin excitations obtained for each phase, using the Holstein-Primakoff transformation and the linear spin-wave approximation. For the collinear and orthogonal (θ=π/2\theta=\pi/2) phases, we predict differences in the magnon spectrum which would allow to distinguish between them in future inelastic neutron scattering experiments

    Cycle of Risk: The Intersection of Poverty, Violence, and Trauma

    Chicago is currently facing a devastating surge in lethal violence in addition to staggering rates of poverty across Illinois. Policymakers and community leaders are struggling with finding short- and long-term solutions to stem the violence and allow neighborhoods to heal. In the meantime, communities are fearing for their own safety and grieving over lost parents, children, friends, and leaders every day. The stakes forgetting the solutions right could not be higher. Poverty and violence often intersect, feed one another, and share root causes. Neighborhoods with high levels of violence are also characterized by high levels of poverty, lack of adequate public services and educational opportunity, poorer health outcomes, asset and income inequality, and more. The underlying socioeconomic conditions in these neighborhoods perpetuate both violence and poverty. Furthermore, trauma can result from both violence and poverty. Unaddressed trauma worsens quality of life, makes it hard to rise out of poverty by posing barriers to success at school and work, and raises the likelihood of aggressive behavior. In this way, untreated trauma—coupled with easy gun availability and other factors—feeds the cycle of poverty and violence
