    Multimodal Imaging Trials with Zebrafish Specimens

    Biomedical imaging is an important technique that can be used for several applications such as cancer research and cardiology. A range of imaging technology, such as PET, SPECT, micro-CT and optical X-ray, is available for imaging. However, many research institutes use rats and mice for preclinical experiments. The purpose of this study was to determine if Zebrafish are compatible for use in pre-clinical imaging, and which modalities and probes work best. Different Zebrafish specimens were tested using five different modalities and four probes. In order to assess with two-dimensional modalities, both fluorescence and planar X-Ray were performed on the specimens. The fluorescence imaging was acquired using OsteoSense 750x and ProSense 750x as the probes. Through the results, we discovered that OsteoSense did not work as well as the ProSense. The next three modalities represented three-dimensional imaging. These modalities consist of X-ray Computed Tomography (CT), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT). The standard settings of high dosage and low voltage were used to assess with X-ray Computed Tomography. Sodium Fluoride (NaF) and Fludeoxyglucose (FDG) were the two probes tested with PET imaging, while MDP with technetium-99 was used for SPECT. The majority of the probes were detected in the specimens, but not at the correct target

    Racism, epistemic injustice, and ideology critique

    Since its 2007 publication, Miranda Fricker’s Epistemic Injustice has sparked a vigorous conversation in analytic philosophy about how social power corrodes individual’s epistemic capacities and distorts collective meaning-making in unjust ways. Yet for all its normative insights into social silencing, I argue that Fricker’s theorization of epistemic dysfunction remains too individualized, cognitivist, and dematerialized to account for racialized imaginaries. Rather than view racisms as normal and normative in racist cultures, Fricker frames identity-driven prejudice as a troubling aberration from otherwise unblemished epistemic and moral norms. This leads her into adopting an overly voluntarist and idealist theory of social change that centres training better knowers rather than unmaking racialized worlds. Ultimately, I contend that we should return to a materialist theory of ideology, following the work of Stuart Hall. Doing so jettisons the narrow focus on individual epistemic failures and instead problematizes how certain social ideas consolidate and reproduce racial hierarchies

    High-pressure Solubilities of Carbon Dioxide and Ethane in Selected Paraffinic, Naphthenic and Aromatic Solvents

    The isothermal solubilities of carbon dioxide in four solvents, benzene, n-decane, n-dodecane and n-tetradecane, were measured at temperatures ranging from 40 to 100�C. The isothermal solubilities of ethane were measured in n-decane at temperatures ranging from 100 to 280�F, in one- and two-ring naphthenic solvents (cyclohexane, trans- Decalin) at temperatures of 50, 100 and 150�C, and in 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-ring aromatic solvents (benzene, naphthalene, phenanthrene and pyrene) at temperatures ranging from 50 to 160�C. Binary interaction parameters for use in the Soave-Redlich-Kwong and Peng-Robinson equations of state have been optimized by regression of the obtained data for each system. Comparisons have been made regarding the accuracy of these equations in fitting the data with the use of one and two binary interaction parameters.     Interest in using organic semiconductors in applications such as large area displays, photovoltaic devices, and radio frequency identification tags stems in part from their prospects for enabling significantly reduced manufacturing costs compared to traditional inorganic semiconductors. However many of the best performing prototype devices produced so far have involved expensive or time-consuming fabrication methods, such as the use of single crystals or thin films deposited under high vacuum conditions.     Liquid flyback booster pre-phase: A study assessment

    The concept of a flyback booster has been around since early in the shuttle program. The original two-stage shuttle concepts used a manned flyback booster. These boosters were eliminated from the program for funding and size reasons. The current shuttle uses two Redesigned Solid Rocket Motors (RSRM's), which are recovered and refurbished after each flight; this is one of the major cost factors of the program. Replacement options have been studied over the past ten years. The conclusion reached by the most recent study is that the liquid flyback booster (LFBB) is the only competitive option from a life-cycle cost perspective. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and practicality of LFBB's. The study provides an expansion of the recommendations made during the aforementioned study. The primary benefits are the potential for enhanced reusability and a reduction of recurring costs. The potential savings in vehicle turnaround could offset the up-front costs. Development of LFBB's requires a commitment to the shuttle program for 20 to 30 years. LFBB's also offer enhanced safety and abort capabilities. Currently, any failure of an RSRM can be considered catastrophic, since there are no intact abort capabilities during the burn of the RSRM's. The performance goal of the LFBB's was to lift a fully loaded orbiter under optimal conditions, so as not to be the limiting factor of the performance capability of the shuttle. In addition, a final benefit is the availability of growth paths for applications other than shuttle
