Beam-Based Alignment of the NuMI Target Station Components at FNAL

    Get PDF
The Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) facility is a conventional horn-focused neutrino beam which produces muon neutrinos from a beam of mesons directed into a long evacuated decay volume. The relative alignment of the primary proton beam, target, and focusing horns affects the neutrino energy spectrum delivered to experiments. This paper describes a check of the alignment of these components using the proton beam.Comment: higher resolution figures available on Fermilab Preprint Server (see SPIRES entry), accepted for publication in Nucl. The NuMI Neutrino Beam and Potential for an Off-Axis Experiment

    Get PDF
The Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) facility at Fermilab is under construction and due to begin operations in late 2004. NuMI will deliver an intense νμ\nu_{\mu} beam of variable energy 2-20 GeV directed into the Earth at 58 mrad. Several aspects of the design are reviewed, and potential limitations to the ultimate neutrino flux are described. In addition, potential measurements of neutrino mixing properties are described.Comment: talk given at NuFact '02, Imperial College London, proceedings to appear in J. Phys. Constrained optimal control of a point absorber wave energy converter with linear generator

    No full text
This paper investigates a method for optimal control of a point absorbing wave energy converter by considering the constraints on motions and forces in the time domain. The problem is converted to an optimization problem with the cost function being convex quadratic and the constraints being nonlinear. The influence of the constraints on the converter is studied, and the results are compared with uncontrolled cases and established theoretical bounds. Since this method is based on the knowledge of the future sea state or the excitation force, the influence of the prediction horizon is indicated. The resulting performance of the wave energy converter under different regular waves shows that this method leads to a substantial increase in conversion efficiency

Synthesis and Biological Activity of Potent HIV-1 Protease Inhibitors Based on Phe-Pro Dihydroxyethylene Isosteres

Peptidomimetic inhibitors of HIV-1 PR are still a key resource in the fight against AIDS. Here we describe the synthesis and biological activity of HIV-1 PR inhibitors based on four novel dihydroxyethylene isosteres of the Phe-Pro and Pro- Pro dipeptides. The isosteres, containing four stereogenic centers, were synthesized in high yield and excellent stereoselectivity via the cyclization of epoxy amines derived from \u3b1-amino acids. The inhibitors were assembled by coupling the isosteres with suitable flanking groups and were screened against recombinant HIV PR showing activities in the subnanomolar to micromolar range. Two Phe-Pro-based inhibitors active at the nanomolar level were further investigated: both inhibitors combine the ability to suppress HIV-1 replication in infected MT-2 cells with low cytotoxicity against the same cells, thereby displaying a high therapeutic index. These results demonstrate the potential of the new Phe-Pro dihydroxyethylene isostere as a core unit of powerful HIV-1 PR inhibitors
