It's (Not) Your Fault! Blame and Trust Repair in Human-Agent Cooperation

Kognitive Systeme. 2017;2017(1).In cooperative settings the success of the team is interlinked with the performance of the individual members. Thus, the possibility to address problems and mistakes of team members needs to be given. A common means in human-human interaction is the attribution of blame. Yet, it is not clear how blame attributions affect cooperation between humans and intelligent virtual agents and the overall perception of the agent. In order to take a first step in answering these questions, a study on cooperative human-agent interaction was conducted. The study was designed to investigate the effects of two different blaming strategies used by the agent in response to an alleged goal achievement failure, that is, self-blame (agent blames itself) followed by an apology versus other-blame (agent blames the user). The results indicate that the combination of blame and trust repair enables a successful continuation of the cooperation without loss of trust and likeability
Joint versus separate inpatient rehabilitation treatment for patients with alcohol use disorder or drug use disorder : an observational study
Background: In many national treatment systems, patients with alcohol use disorders (AUD) and those with drug use disorders (DUD) are treated separately, while other systems provide joint treatment for both kinds of substance use disorders (SUDs). Regarding long-term rehabilitation treatment of DUD and AUD patients, there is however a lack of empirical studies on the comparison between a separate versus joint treatment modality. Methods: Data were gathered from 2 rehabilitation units located in small towns from the same German region. One unit provided treatment to a mixed group of AUD and DUD patients, while the other unit treated the 2 groups separately. Staffing, funding, and treatment programs were otherwise similar between facilities. Data were gathered from standardized routine documentation and standardized interviews. In order to understand correlates of premature treatment termination, a logistic regression analysis was performed, with treatment modality and type of SUD as main predictors, and a range of patient characteristics as covariates. Results: Patients (N=319) were diagnosed with AUD (48%), DUD (34%), or AUD plus DUD (18%). Patients in joint treatment showed a higher prevalence of lapses during treatment than those in separate treatment (26% versus 12%; p=0.009), but there was no significant difference in the prevalence of premature terminations (38% versus 44%, p=0.26). Treatment modality and interaction between modality and type of SUD was not significantly associated with premature termination. Joint treatment completers showed higher satisfaction with treatment than separate treatment completers ( p<0.001). Conclusion: We found no evidence here for a difference between treatment modalities in terms of premature termination rate. Satisfaction level was higher in those who completed joint treatment compared to separate treatment.Peer reviewe
Toroidal momentum transport in a tokamak caused by symmetry breaking parallel derivatives
A new mechanism for toroidal momentum transport in a tokamak is investigated
using the gyro-kinetic model. First, an analytic model is developed through the
use of the ballooning transform. The terms that generate the momentum transport
are then connected with the poloidal derivative of the ballooning envelope,
which are one order smaller in the normalised Larmor radius, compared with the
derivative of the eikonal. The mechanism, therefore, does not introduce an
inhomogeneity in the radial direction, in contrast with the effect of profile
shearing. Numerical simulations of the linear ion temperature gradient mode
with adiabatic electrons, retaining the finite rho* effects in the ExB
velocity, the drift, and the gyro-average, are presented. The momentum flux is
found to be linear in the normalised Larmor radius (\rho*) but is,
nevertheless, generating a sizeable counter-current rotation. The total
momentum flux scales linear with the aspect ratio of the considered magnetic
surface, and increases with increasing magnetic shear, safety factor, and
density and temperature gradients
M+D: conceptual guidelines for compiling a materials library
This article proposes to present a study conducted by the Raw Materials research group, the results of which comprise the conceptual guidelines for compiling an M+D material library. The study includes the topic, materials and design taking the impact of the changes that came into being in the post industrial era on project methodologies and the search for information regarding materials.
Taking into account the importance and complexity that these relationships have taken on currently, we have studied the issue of materials based on Manzini (1983) and Ashby and Johnson (2002). Afterward different databases and materials libraries located in the Brazil, the United States, France and Italy geared toward design professionals and students were analyzed to understand what information and means of access to them were available. The project methodologies were approached based on Löbach (1991), Bürdeck (1994), Schulmann (1994), Baxter (1998), Dantas (1998 and 2005) and Papanek (1995 and 2000). This study sought to identify the key elements of the role of materials in the project process today, to serve as a parameter for the analysis of the models studied.
A comparative analysis of the models investigated enabled identification of positive and negative aspects to adapt to the needs previously mentioned and identify conceptual guidelines for compiling a collection of materials for use in design projects.

Dramatic reduction of mortality in pneumococcal meningitis
Background
Acute bacterial meningitis is still a life threatening disease.
Methods
We performed a retrospective observational study on the clinical characteristics of consecutively admitted patients with acute pneumococcal meningitis in a single tertiary care center in central Europe (from 2003 until 2015). Data were compared with a previously published historical group of 87 patients treated for pneumococcal meningitis at the same hospital (from 1984 until 2002).
Results
Fifty-five consecutive patients with microbiologically proven pneumococcal meningitis were included. Most striking, mortality was down to 5.5 %, which was significantly lower than in the historical group where 24.1 % of the patients did not survive. Intracranial complications during the course of the disease were common and affected half of the patients. Unlike in the historic group, most of the intracranial complications (except ischemic stroke) were no longer associated with a low Glasgow Outcome Score at discharge.
Conclusion
The drastic reduction of mortality proves there have been important advances in the treatment of pneumococcal meningitis. Nevertheless, the fact that only 44.2 % of survivors had a full recovery indicates that the search for new adjunctive treatment options must be ongoing
