    Determining the Significance of Honors

    Get PDF
The title of my address is “Determining the Significance of Honors.” That’s a hefty title. This summer I was reading the “numbers” issue of the JNCHC and thinking about how we measure impact and effects related to honors education when Hallie Savage asked me what the title of my presidential address would be. Given my academic discipline and my current thoughts about assessment centered on that JNCHC issue, I thought that the title Determining the Significance of Honors would be illustrative of my interests and focus

The Cambridge World Shakespeare Encyclopedia: An International Digital Resource for Study, Teaching, and Research

    Get PDF
The Cambridge World Shakespeare Encyclopedia, an innovative digital reference source and workspace, is designed for collaboration among scholars, teachers, students and performers worldwide. This project addresses three challenges for the transnational humanities today. It aggregates a wealth of dispersed resources in an encyclopedic, rational and dynamic way, mapping paths of discovery. It proposes a public-private partnership that balances copyright constraints with open access to primary and secondary materials. It combines user-generated content with peer review, modeling new modes of publication for the field. An international team is developing core content, commissioned by Cambridge University Press, who will build and host the site, making it sustainable. The Center for Transformative Scholarship (USC) will support prototype design and planning. The International Shakespeare Association will partner on the project, advancing intellectual exchange among its global membership

    Creating Inclusive Extension Programs

    Get PDF
To develop more inclusive programs, Extension professionals should attend to self-awareness, communication, and program structure. We suggest engaging in reflection and examining word choices and program decisions to make programs more welcoming to all members of the communities we serve. Extension professionals should incorporate these practices in their work to meet the needs of increasingly diverse communities

A qualitative investigation into the social experiences of young people with epilepsy: Perceived impact and sense of self and clinical research portfolio

    Get PDF
Background: This study examines referrals to a newly established Neuropsychology Assessment Service (NAS) within Argyll and Bute. In order for the service to successfully develop, it is essential that this provision be monitored to aid future planning. Methods: Data were gathered from those referrals accepted for assessment by the NAS within the first 9 months of the service's establishment. Information was gathered from the clinical psychology department's database and relevant case-notes. Results: A total of 15 referrals were analysed in terms of a) the profile of referrals to the service b) the nature of the assessment service received c) the outcome of cases. The most notable results were the attendance of all 15 referrals for the duration of assessment, especially in light of significantly high journey times for many patients to attend their appointments. Conclusions: With initial results being positive, the service will need to plan the next steps for developing the NAS, and assess the resource implications for this. Staffing shortages and changes in the Health Board's management and structure may complicate these developments

Repeated epitaxial growth and transfer of arrays of patterned, vertically aligned, crystalline Si wires from a single Si(111) substrate

    Get PDF
Multiple arrays of Si wires were sequentially grown and transferred into a flexible polymer film from a single Si(111) wafer. After growth from a patterned, oxide-coated substrate, the wires were embedded in a polymer and then mechanically separated from the substrate, preserving the array structure in the film. The wire stubs that remained were selectively etched from the Si(111) surface to regenerate the patterned substrate. Then the growth catalyst was electrodeposited into the holes in the patterned oxide. Cycling through this set of steps allowed regrowth and polymer film transfer of several wire arrays from a single Si wafer

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Cardiovascular Consequences of Myocardial Bridging in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

    Get PDF
Myocardial bridging (MB) is a congenital variant in which a segment of a coronary artery follows an atypical intramural course under a “bridge” of myocardium and is notably common in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). This systematic review and meta-analysis explored the clinical consequences of MB in patients with HCM. A total of 3 outcome domains were investigated: cardiovascular mortality, nonfatal adverse cardiac events, and investigative indicators of myocardial ischemia. A meta-analysis was performed on 10 observational studies comparing outcomes in patients with HCM with and without MB. Studies were identified through a systematic search of 4 databases (PubMed, Scopus, Medline Complete, and Web of Science). The quality of the studies was assessed using a modified version of the Downs and Black tool, from which studies could score a maximum of 23 points. The mean score was 17.5 ± 1.3 (good). The meta-analysis showed that MB was not associated with cardiovascular mortality (odds ratio [OR] 1.70, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.56 to 5.15, p = 0.35) or nonfatal adverse cardiac events (OR 1.80, 95% CI 0.98 to 3.28, p = 0.06) but was associated with myocardial ischemia (OR 1.89, 95% CI 1.03 to 3.44, p = 0.04). In conclusion, the potential prognostic implications of MB in HCM, especially in those with hemodynamically significant bridges and/or severe underlying disease, should not be ignored. The focus of future studies should be to establish functional and morphologic thresholds, by which MB may adversely influence prognosis by corroborating imaging findings with clinical outcome data

Anterior Subcapsular Cataract Secondary to Black Mold Exposure

A case report of a 31-year-old woman who developed anterior subacapsular cataracts, and associated dermatological signs, after exposure to black mold. While atopic illness is commonly seen in childhood, a growing body of literature supports adult onset atopic dermatitis. Anterior subcapsular cataracts are pathognomonic for atopic illness, and can support a definitive and expedited dermatologic diagnosis of adult onset disease
