Anaerobic digestion was investigated as a potential method for on-farm disposal of fallen stock (pig carcases), degrading the carcase material to produce biogas and digestate. The effects of feedstock (sugar beet pulp or pig carcase material or a 50:50 mix) and organic loading rate (50 g-TS L−1 or 100 g-TS L−1), during mesophilic (35 °C) anaerobic digestion were investigated. Anaerobic digestion was achieved for all experimental treatments, however the pig carcase material at the higher organic loading rate produced the second highest methane yield (0.56 Nm3 kg-VS−1 versus a range of 0.14–0.58 Nm3 kg-VS−1 for other treatments), with the highest percentage of methane in total biogas (61.6% versus a range of 36.1–55.2% for all other treatments). Satisfactory pathogen reduction is a legislative requirement for disposal of carcase material. Pathogens were quantified throughout the anaerobic digestion process. Enterococcus faecalis concentrations decreased to negligible levels (2.8 log10 CFU g-TS−1), whilst Clostridium perfringens levels remained unaffected by treatment throughout the digestion process (5.3 ± 0.2 log10 CFU g-TS−1)

Nowadays, an important research topic related with medical devices are the materials designed as bone tissues substitutes. Hard tissues have a great capacity of self-regeneration but in front of traumatic or pathologic critical bone defects it is necessary the use of bone substitutes or templates as temporal or permanent grafts. Glasses or glass-ceramics are osteoconductive, osteoinductive and biocompatible materials. In addition, they have the ability to link directly to the living bone tissues without any interface (bioactivity). Also, it has been reported that bioglasses favor the angiogenesis process and the cellular adhesion, proliferation and differentiation necessary features for bone tissue engineering scaffolds. This work refers generalities of the bioactive glasses and glass-ceramics compositions, manufacture processes, properties, advantages, disadvantages as well as the main clinical applications and new developments for tissue engineering

Recently, fenestrated, branched and stent grafts have been developed in order to treat endovascular aneurysmal pathology at the level of the aorta in the emergence of the visceral arteries. For the implantation of stents, it is necessary to have a precise planimetry of the origin and orientation of the visceral branches in order firstly to perform the correct manufacture of the endoprosthesis and secondly the placement with precision of the same. The knowledge of the emergency of the vessels of the aortic wall and its orientation knowing the angle of emergency. The data obtained for the planning of the endovascular treatment of 37 patients in order to obtain data from the descriptive point of view of this sector

Beneficial effect of nutrisimZapotitlán against LPS-induced liver injury: Oxidative stress markers and mitochondrial ATP-ase activity

Sepsis is a systemic host response which implicates an inflammatory state due to a bacterial infection and involving1 multiple organ failure. In order to modulate this systemic reaction, liver plays a pivotal role due to its central contribution in metabolism and host defense mechanism. The process of sepsis as an inflammatory condition results in the production of free radicals, in some cases induced by lip op oly saccharide which conducts to oxidative damage and mitochondrial impairment; these alterations may contribute to the pathophysiology of septic shock. The use of antioxidants in the treatment of this pathology reduces mitochondrial damage and oxidative stress, therefore in this study, treatment with NutrisimZapotitlán a nutritive supplement used empirically in the treatment of several degenerative disorders was tested in biochemical parameters indicative of oxidative stress and mitochondrial ATPase activity in rat liver mitochondria damage-induced by LPS. The results showed that treatment with NutrisimZapotitlán 30 min prior or after the LPS challenge significantly attenuates the end-products of lipid oxidation (p<0.05), restores total antioxidant capacity, the membrane fluidity and preserves ATPase activity. In conclusion, NutrisimZapotitlán administration prior or after LPS damage, ameliorates liver damage. Therefore, the beneficial effects of NutrisimZapotitlán against oxidative stress and ATPase activity in rat liver mitochondria presented in this study may suggest a potential chemoprotective effect in sepsis prevention.
