Judith Schalansky bietet in ihrem "Atlas der abgelegenen Inseln" ein semi-fiktionales (Vexier-)Spiel mit den populären, literarischen und bildlichen Traditionen von Insel-Darstellungen und Insel-Images. In der postmodernen Assemblage von Sehnsuchtsphantasien und Verbrechensgeschichten, Technik- und Naturkatastrophen wird die Insel einerseits zum Bild für den Utopieverlust, andererseits bleibt die Insel Chiffre eines Erzählens zwischen Fabulierkunst und Sachbuch, Kunst und Kartographie – und idealer Ort historischer Narration(en) jenseits der ‚großen Erzählungen‘. Judith Schalansky’s "Atlas of Remote Islands" functions as a semi-fictional play with popular literary and pictorial traditions in representing islands and island imagery. In the postmodern assembly of fantasies of longing, stories about crimes, natural and technology disasters the island becomes the image of lost utopia, but at the same time remains a code for a narrative mode between fiction and faction, art and cartography. Consequently, the notion of the island functions as a place ideal for historical narrative(s) beyond “grand narratives”

Topographien epistolarer Kommunikation Konventionalität und Materialität in einigen Briefen Georg Büchners

The international research on letters and the epistolary culture is constantly growing, but there are still many unchartered territories. This also applies to the letters of the German author Georg Büchner. For considering to which extend these letters contain conventional or innovative/critical contents, it is important to take into consideration the contents as well as the form of the letter. Two examples will be given: (1) Descriptions of landscapes are highly conventional in (travel-) letters of the 18th/19th century, so here the significance of idyllic landscapes and sublime mountains in literature, arts, and culture is described in order to highlight the hidden political as well as individual message of his letter to his fiancé. (2) Even more conventional is the rhetoric of letter writing in the 19th century. It is therefore necessary to consider the information which is given by the choice of paper and ink and by the topology of the letters, i.e. the distribution of text and ‘empty rooms’ on the paper. We find the letters conventional to a high degree but there are also breaches of the conventions in both fields which shed some new light on the epistolography of a political author

Die Sieben Todsünden

Weshalb faszinieren und inspirieren die Sieben Todsünden bis heute – auch und gerade obwohl theologische Kommentare längst an Verbindlichkeit eingebüßt haben? In exemplarischen Studien widmet sich der Sammelband der Wirkungsgeschichte der Sieben Todsünden in den unterschiedlichen Künsten: Literatur und bildende Kunst, Film und Fernsehen. Der Fokus liegt weniger auf einer Ideengeschichte der Todsünden als auf deren Formelhaftigkeit, die gerade im Verblassen der ursprünglichen Hintergründe ihre Wirkmacht in breiter diskursiver Streuung entfaltet. Dabei reichen die vielfältigen Fortschreibungen und Transformationen weit über das frühe Mittelalter und die klassische Theologie hinaus und zeigen in der Moderne und Postmoderne verstärkt nur noch Allusionen auf die ursprünglich religiöse Ordnungsphantasie. So werden die Todsünden zu einem intermedialen Fundus für ethische und politische Reflexionen, ästhetische Transformationen und künstlerische Experimente. Der Band versammelt Studien, die sich aus literatur-, medien- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive sowohl den einzelnen Todsünden superbia, invidia, ira, acedia, avaritia, gula, luxuria als auch dem Septenar insgesamt widmen

Distinct genetic architectures for syndromic and nonsyndromic congenital heart defects identified by exome sequencing.

Congenital heart defects (CHDs) have a neonatal incidence of 0.8-1% (refs. 1,2). Despite abundant examples of monogenic CHD in humans and mice, CHD has a low absolute sibling recurrence risk (∼2.7%), suggesting a considerable role for de novo mutations (DNMs) and/or incomplete penetrance. De novo protein-truncating variants (PTVs) have been shown to be enriched among the 10% of 'syndromic' patients with extra-cardiac manifestations. We exome sequenced 1,891 probands, including both syndromic CHD (S-CHD, n = 610) and nonsyndromic CHD (NS-CHD, n = 1,281). In S-CHD, we confirmed a significant enrichment of de novo PTVs but not inherited PTVs in known CHD-associated genes, consistent with recent findings. Conversely, in NS-CHD we observed significant enrichment of PTVs inherited from unaffected parents in CHD-associated genes. We identified three genome-wide significant S-CHD disorders caused by DNMs in CHD4, CDK13 and PRKD1. Our study finds evidence for distinct genetic architectures underlying the low sibling recurrence risk in S-CHD and NS-CHD

Die Geschichte des Jazz spiegelt sich auch in der literarischen Aneignung dieser Musikrichtung nieder, die v. a. in einer Nutzung dieser Musik und Musiker als literarische Stoffe oder Motive besteht. Während in der Weimarer Republik der Jazz vom Ragtime bis Swing als Totentanz auf den Wilhelminismus oder gar die abendländische Kultur begriffen wird, erscheint er in der Nachkriegszeit als zugleich anti-faschistische und modernistische Form. Dabei entstehen Jazz-Geschichten, die nicht selten aus älteren zivilisationskritischen Philosophien oder neueren politischen Mythen gespeist werden, aber auch neue intermediale Formen. The history of jazz is also reflected in the literary appropriation of this musical movement, which comprises of the use of jazz and jazz musicians as literary themes and motifs. While in the Weimar Republic jazz (from ragtime to swing) was seen as a danse macabre celebrating the end of the Wilhelminian era or Western culture in general, in the post-war era it was seen both as an anti-fascist as well as a modernist form. For that reason, we can observe the emergence of jazz stories as derivations of critical philosophies and newer political myths as well as new intermedial forms
