    This study examined the role of K-12 science teachers’ understandings and perceptions of the Next Generation Science Standards, implementation of the new standards in the classroom, and potential barriers to implementation as reform stakeholders had envisioned. Grounded in the relevant literature and working from the Teacher-Centered System Reform framework, this study employed a quantitative approach to data collection. The TCSR Model framed this study by linking teachers’ demographic and professional profile, teaching experience, professional development, district-level, school-level, and classroom-level contexts and illuminates the dynamic effect the factors have on teachers’ thinking and their practice. The study recognizes teachers’ knowledge and beliefs, their personal backgrounds, and the contextual factors that influence their practices and provides a context for improvement built from the interrelatedness of the varying perspectives of reform

    Influences of Display Design and Task Management Strategy on Situation Awareness, Performance, and Workload in Process Control Environments

    Process control environments demand well informed high performing human monitors to maintain effectual control of multiple processes. Most research aims to satisfy this requirement through the evaluation of competing heuristic-based display design constructs. Contrary to that method, this study takes a novel approach by examining both factors internal and external to the human observer to identify where beneficial outcomes actually reside. External factors explore the underlying design construct attributes, while internal factors focus on the effect of operator task management strategy, age, and experience. Results from this study present several key findings relative to operator situation awareness, performance, and workload. Findings suggest the specific manner in which external information is presented and oriented on a process control room display is inconsequential toward situation awareness and performance. Further, operator preferred task management strategy has a profound effect on their performance and experienced workload, while exhibiting only a mild effect on situation awareness. In most cases, an Adaptive Attack strategy produces desirable results, while an Adaptive Avoidance does not. Interleaving and Multitasking fall between these two extremes. Lastly, findings indicate subject variables, age and experience have negative effects on overall situation awareness and system deviation prediction times

    This article purports the idea that summer programs that experiment with media literacy and social-emotional learning could potentially affect students’ academic performance. Based on a six-week program, working with rising eighth grade students in a low-income school district, this program allowed students to work on media projects while trying to develop stronger capacities of self-awareness, positive decision-making, and stronger relationship development. The article intends to offer practitioners in media studies and pedagogy, insight of how to implement social and emotional learning into media classrooms

    Driving a car in an urban setting is an extremely difficult problem, incorporating a large number of complex visual tasks; however, this problem is solved daily by most adults with little apparent effort. This paper proposes a novel vision-based approach to autonomous driving that can predict and even anticipate a driver's behavior in real time, using preattentive vision only. Experiments on three large datasets totaling over 200 000 frames show that our preattentive model can (1) detect a wide range of driving-critical context such as crossroads, city center, and road type; however, more surprisingly, it can (2) detect the driver's actions (over 80% of braking and turning actions) and (3) estimate the driver's steering angle accurately. Additionally, our model is consistent with human data: First, the best steering prediction is obtained for a perception to action delay consistent with psychological experiments. Importantly, this prediction can be made before the driver's action. Second, the regions of the visual field used by the computational model strongly correlate with the driver's gaze locations, significantly outperforming many saliency measures and comparable to state-of-the-art approaches.European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013
