Sur l'unité de l'Aurignacien ancien dans le Sud-Ouest de la France : la production des lames et des lamelles

Dans le Sud-Ouest de la France, l'Aurignacien ancien «classique», à sagaies à base fendue, est un technocomplexe caractérisé par une très forte unité tectinique des productions laminaire et lamellaire. Cet article est une contribution à la caractérisation des concepts et des modalités qui régissent la production de ces deux types de supports. Nous nous appuyons essentiellement sur le matériel de Corbiac -Vignoble II, atelier de taille où une matière première «parfaite» a permis aux tailleurs aurignaciens de s'exprimer quasiment sans contraintes, illustrant ainsi au mieux les concepts de taille sous-jacents à toutes les séries d'Aurignacien ancien récemment étudiées.En el suroeste francés, el Auriñaciense «clásico», de azagayas de base hendida, es un tecnocomplejo caracterizado por una unidad técnica muy marcada en cuanto a la producciôn de hojas y de hojitas. Contribution à la connaissance de l'Aurignacien du Levant (analyse typo-technologique des industries lithiques de la séquence de Yabroud II (Syrie))

Ce travail de thèse intitulé Contribution à la connaissance de l Aurignacien du Levant : analyse typo-technologique des industries lithiques de la séquence de Yabroud II (Syrie) consiste en un bilan bibliographique sur l Aurignacien du Levant et une étude typo-technologique de l importante séquence de Yabroud II. L objectif premier de cette recherche est de discuter de la définition de l Aurignacien du Levant. Cette définition sera établie en tenant compte de ce qui est connu pour l Aurignacien d Europe d une part, de l Aurignacien du reste du Levant et de l Ahmarien d autre part. Nous nous appuierons pour ce faire sur l approche typo-technologique des industries lithiques.This thesis paper entitled: Contribution to the Knowledge of the Levantine Aurignacian: a Typo-Technological Analysis of the Lithic Industries of the Yabrud II Sequence consists of a literature review on the Levantine Aurignacian and a typo-technological study of the important Yabrud II sequence. The main objective of this research is to discuss the definition of the Levantine Aurignacian. This definition will be established by examining what is known as the European Aurignacian, on the one hand, and what is known as the Levantine Aurignacian and the Ahmarian, on the other. L’industrie lithique du Paléolithique moyen récent de Roc de Combe (Payrignac, Lot, France), un nouvel exemple de Moustérien Discoïde à denticulés

Roc de Combe est l’un des sites de référence pour étudier les modalités de passage Paléolithique moyen récent – Paléolithique supérieur initial (Châtelperronien) et Paléolithique supérieur ancien (Aurignacien ancien) dans le Sud-Ouest de la France. Fouillé par F. Bordes en 1966 et longtemps réputé pour une « interstratification » – désormais rejetée – servant la thèse de l’acculturation, il a fait l’objet d’une étude des niveaux attribués au Châtelperronien et à l’Aurignacien, mais les séries du Moustérien demeuraient jusqu’à ce jour identifiées, cependant non étudiées. Un récent travail universitaire mené par l’une d’entre nous (M.L.M.) permet désormais de disposer d’un bilan techno-économique et typologique confirmant l’attribution de cette série au Moustérien de débitage Discoïde à denticulés, techno-complexe qui clôt dans le Sud-Ouest de la France nombre d’archéo-séquences. La présente étude donne les premières données numériques relatives à cette série inédite, la positionne dans un cadre chrono-culturel et son contexte régional, en insistant sur un statut pétrographique relativement original propre à la Bouriane, région faisant la liaison entre Périgord et Quercy.Roc de Combe (Lot, France) is one of the key sites concerning the Late Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition in southwestern France. 1966’ excavation, led by François Bordes, has yielded some Mousterian, Chatelperronian, Aurignacian and Gravettian rich assemblages. Here we present the analysis of the unpublished Mousterian lithic assemblages, studied by one of us during a Master degree. From this study, the belonging of this industry to a Denticulate-Discoid Mousterian has been confirmed, a technocomplex usually classically attributed to the final stage of the Mousterian. Several radiocarbon dates confirm this attribution. Finally, our analysis shows an original lithic raw material procurement strategy, due to the site location, peculiar to the Bouriane between Perigord and Quercy

The PGR Networks in France: Collaboration of users and the genetic resources centre on small grain cereals

Plant genetic resources (PGR) have been used in breeding programs for many decades to produce modern varieties by introducing genes of interest, in particular, resistance genes. Nevertheless, these resources remain underestimated if we focus on abiotic stress tolerance or new agricultural techniques, which consider productivity with regard to the environment. In recent years, new users, such as scientists and farmers, have discovered diverse sources of interest for screening and exploiting natural diversity conserved in PGR collections.In the case of the French cereals PGR Network, a share of the responsibility, based on the knowledge and ability of network members, has been decided in order to better promote the use of PGR. The main species of Triticum (wheat), Hordeum (barley), Secale (rye), ×Triticosecale (triticale), Avena (oat) genera and their wild relatives are held in the collection. By combining phenotypic and genotypic data, the whole genetic resource collection has been structured into smaller functional groups of accessions, in order to facilitate the access and meet the increasing number of different requirements for the distribution of adapted samples of accessions.New panels are being processed to give breeders and scientists new useful tools to study, for instance, stress resistance or to develop association studies. Fouillé par Jean Guichard en 1968 et 1969, le site de plein air de Canaule II (Creysse, Dordogne) présente un unique niveau archéologique attribué au Châtelperronien par la présence de pièces à dos caractéristiques. Ce gisement fut interprété comme étant un atelier de débitage, directement implanté sur les gîtes de silex maestrichtien du Bergeracois.Nous le présentons ici à travers l’approche taphonomique, techno-économique et spatiale de cinq remontages lithiques. Cette étude montre l’exceptionnelle conservation du site et explore le potentiel qu’il révèle pour la définition du Châtelperronien et la caractérisation des comportements humains au début du Paléolithique supérieur

Investigating species composition in the Early Aurignacian of le Piage (France) through collagen fingerprinting (ZooMS) of screen-recovered small bone fragments

In the field of paleoproteomics, ZooMS (Zooarcheology by Mass Spectrometry) has been developed to identify morphologically non-diagnostic animal remains to taxon, offering insights into human subsistence practices. Here, we report new ZooMS analyses of 1,050 Early Aurignacian (ca. 37,000–34,000 cal BP) bone fragments from the site of Le Piage (Lot, France). The studied sample is heavily fragmented and was retrieved through water sieving. In our analysis, we compare the taxonomic identifications of bone remains using traditional morphological attributes with remains identified using ZooMS and discuss the implications of the taxonomic patterns that we uncovered. Our results indicate that, despite small effect sizes, the faunal spectrum identified through ZooMS differs from that obtained through morphological analyses. While reindeer remains the dominant species, bovids and other cervids are more abundantly represented in the ZooMS fraction. Two rare taxa, a hare (Lepus sp.) and a previously unidentified carnivore (Pantherinae/Hyaenidae/Mustelidae), were also identified using ZooMS. In addition, we note an increase of Bos/Bison remains in the sample of spongy fragments that is possibly explained by the use of grease-rich bones and bone portions as fuel. Our work adds new data on patterns of reindeer dominance during the Early Aurignacian and illustrates how ZooMS identifications of screen-recovered fragments can enhance our understanding of Paleolithic subsistence strategies and patterns of site occupation

The Naturally Processed CD95L Elicits a c-Yes/Calcium/PI3K-Driven Cell Migration Pathway

Patients affected by chronic inflammatory disorders display high amounts of soluble CD95L. This homotrimeric ligand arises from the cleavage by metalloproteases of its membrane-bound counterpart, a strong apoptotic inducer. In contrast, the naturally processed CD95L is viewed as an apoptotic antagonist competing with its membrane counterpart for binding to CD95. Recent reports pinpointed that activation of CD95 may attract myeloid and tumoral cells, which display resistance to the CD95-mediated apoptotic signal. However, all these studies were performed using chimeric CD95Ls (oligomerized forms), which behave as the membrane-bound ligand and not as the naturally processed CD95L. Herein, we examine the biological effects of the metalloprotease-cleaved CD95L on CD95-sensitive activated T-lymphocytes. We demonstrate that cleaved CD95L (cl-CD95L), found increased in sera of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients as compared to that of healthy individuals, promotes the formation of migrating pseudopods at the leading edge of which the death receptor CD95 is capped (confocal microscopy). Using different migration assays (wound healing/Boyden Chamber/endothelial transmigration), we uncover that cl-CD95L promotes cell migration through a c-yes/Ca2+/PI3K-driven signaling pathway, which relies on the formation of a CD95-containing complex designated the MISC for Motility-Inducing Signaling Complex. These findings revisit the role of the metalloprotease-cleaved CD95L and emphasize that the increase in cl-CD95L observed in patients affected by chronic inflammatory disorders may fuel the local or systemic tissue damage by promoting tissue-filtration of immune cells
