    Evidence of spin disorder at the surface–core interface of oxygen passivated Fe nanoparticles

    Hysteresis, thermal dependence of magnetization, and coercivity of oxide coated ultrafine Fe particles prepared by inert gas condensation and oxygen passivation have been studied in the 5–300 K range. The results are found to be consistent with a spin-glasslike state of the oxide layer inducing, through exchange interaction with the ferromagnetic core, a shift of the field cooled hysteresis loops at temperatures below the freezing at approximately 50 K.Dirección General de Investigación y Desarrollo.     Predicting the Impact of Climate Change on Thermal Comfort in A Building Category: The Case of Linear-type Social Housing Stock in Southern Spain

    The Climate Change scenario projected by the IPCC for the year 2050 predicts noticeable increases in temperature. In severe summer climates, such as the Mediterranean area, this would have very negative e ects on thermal comfort in the existing housing stock, given the current high percentage of dwellings which are obsolete in energy terms and house a population at serious risk of energy poverty. The main aim of this paper is to generate a predictive model in order to assess the impact of this future climate scenario on thermal comfort conditions in an entire building category. To do so, calibrated models representing linear-type social multi-family buildings, dating from the post-war period and located in southern Spain, will be simulated extensively using transient energy analyses performed by EnergyPlus. In addition, a sensitivity analysis will be performed to identify the most influential parameters on thermal discomfort. The main results predict a generalized deterioration in indoor thermal comfort conditions due to global warming, increasing the average percentage of discomfort hours during the summer by more than 35%. This characterization of the future thermal behaviour of the residential stock in southern Spain could be a trustworthy tool for decision-making in energy retrofitting projects which are so badly needed. To do so, further work is required on some limitations of this model so that di erent user profiles and typologies can be represented in detail and an economic assessment can be included

    Galectin (Gal)-1, an endogenous lectin found at sites of immune privilege, plays a critical role in the regulation of the immune response. Therapeutic administration of Gal-1 or its genetic delivery suppresses chronic inflammation in experimental models of autoimmunity.     Here we confirm the efficacy of MbΔmce2-phoP to protect mice against bTB challenge and we demonstrated that this new attenuated strain is safer than our previous bTB vaccine MbΔmce2.     La Gestión de la Innovación en las PyMEs

    El objetivo del estudio es indagar en las características de la gestión de la innovación en las pequeñas y medianas empresas. En concreto, el proyecto pretende identificar cuáles son los factores que viabilizan u obstaculizan el proceso de generación, adopción, implementación y difusión de nuevas ideas e innovaciones en las empresas. Esta investigación adopta una metodología cualitativa basada en el estudio de casos que permite profundizar no sólo sobre las características concretas de las prácticas organizacionales que hacen al ‘proceso’, sino también sobre sus principales limitaciones y desafíos. Para ello fueron seleccionadas y estudiadas seis empresas PyME. De la revisión de la literatura se desprende que las características que adopta este ‘proceso’ en el seno de una PyME depende en general de: (i) el ambiente o medio interno de la empresa, entendiéndose por ello las características de la organización, sus recursos humanos, el grado de desarrollo de sus capacidades y competencias tecnológicas, sus estrategias, etc. (ii) la visión de la conducción o la cultura organizacional, es decir, la forma en que la innovación es valorada, promovida y apoyada al interior de la empresa, y (iii) el contexto externo, que incluye a las redes comerciales, sociales e institucionales que contribuyen en alguna medida al desarrollo de nuevas ideas y producto

    Mycobacterium bovis requires P27 (LprG) to arrest phagosome maturation and replicate within bovine macrophages

    Mycobacterium bovis causes tuberculosis in a wide variety of mammals, with strong tropism for cattle and eventually humans. P27, also called LprG, is among the proteins involved in the mechanisms of the virulence and persistence of M. bovis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Here, we describe a novel function of P27 in the interaction of M. bovis with its natural host cell, the bovine macrophage. We found that a deletion in the p27-p55 operon impairs the replication of M. bovis in bovine macrophages. Importantly, we show for the first time that M. bovis arrests phagosome maturation in a process that depends on P27. This effect is P27 specific since complementation with wild-type p27 but not p55 fully restored the wild-type phenotype of the mutant strain; this indicates that P55 plays no important role during the early events of M. bovis infection. In addition, we also showed that the presence of P27 from M. smegmatis decreases the association of LAMP-3 with bead phagosomes, indicating that P27 itself blocks phagosome-lysosome fusion by modulating the traffic machinery in the cell host.Fil: Vázquez, Cristina Lourdes.
