The Bilbao effect (Guggenheim Museum Bilbao)

    Get PDF
When a decaying industrial city in Spain’s Basque country decided in the 1990s to spend $228.3 million on a modern art museum, critics objected to squandering so much public money on something so irrelevant and exclusive. This year is the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao’s (GMB) tenth anniversary, sufficient time since its opening to evaluate the museum’s effectiveness in reactivating the city’s economy. So, have the public authorities that invested in the Guggenheim recovered their costly investment?Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, economic valuation

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in scientific journals: Asymmetries between the American art perspective and the European regional planning viewpoint.

Bilbao has gained fame with the Guggenheim Museum, even in the Academic world. Google Scholar yields 2610 outcomes for “Bilbao Guggenheim” and the number of articles published in ISI-WoK listed-journals is 93 up until today. Surprisingly, however, almost 80% of these articles have been published by foreign authors, whereas many prestigious local authors have little or almost no scientific production in the ISI listed journals. This article analyses the connexions between nationality, language and publications, and offers an explanation for the disproportion between foreign and local knowledge, which causes mistaken scientific and public opinions about the “Guggenheim-Effect”.Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Arts, Culture and Creativity as Drivers for Territorial Development, Innovation and Competitiveness

Notwithstanding the heterogeneity of the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) sectors, all of them exhibit similar causes of market failure and face similar challenges related to the digital shift and to increasing globalisation. CCI share a common need for policy intervention to correct their market failures facing the digital and globalization challenges. This work seeks to establish a preliminary approach to the CCI’s related local/regional competitiveness and innovation policies. The general objective of the work is to develop a basic understanding of the risks and challenges (organizational, technological and institutional) of the CCI in Europe in order to be able to develop smart local and regional innovation policies for competitive CCI development and a favourable stimulation of innovative spill-over effects towards the rest of the economy. The understanding of risks and challenges is relevant for the design of effective and balanced European public policies for innovation and competitiveness in an ever-more intangible and creative economy. This work seeks to give a preliminary approach to a decisive lack of knowledge on the mechanisms of creative/cultural regional innovation policies.Funded by EUROPEAN COMMISION – CULTURE. Using Google Analytics for measuring inlinks effectiveness.

The aim of this brief communication is to develop a tracking methodology to analyse the effectiveness of inlink visits (return visit behaviour and length of sessions). In other words, how deep do inlink visitors navigate into the website? Do all inlinks perform the same? This paper addresses these questions by time series analysis of Google Analytics data, with a methodology developed by Plaza (2009). The importance of this article is not the particular website but the methodology tested to arrive at these results, an experiment that could be repeated with different websites

[EN] This project aims to provide answers to some housing problems such as, cost and pollution, partially replacing cement by pozzolanic materials. On the one hand, lower clinker production (which is highly polluting) would be achieved, and; on the other hand, the construction and demolition debris, (which are produced on a large scale in the construction industry) would be managed properly. Thus, the laid out project is twofold: it goes green due to the reduction in clinker production and to the management of waste materials, and from the economic point of view, it brings down the cost thanks to the partial cement replacement.Plaza Gámez, B.
