The EET Horizontal Tails Investigation and the EET Lateral Controls Investigation
In the energy efficient transport (EET) Horizontal Tails Investigation, aerodynamic data were measured for five different horizontal tails on a full span model with a wide body fuselage. Three of the horizontal tails were low tail configurations and two were T tail configurations. All tails were tested in conjunction with two wings, a current wide body wing and a high aspect ratio supercritical wing. Local downwash angles and dynamic pressures in the vicinity of the tails were measured using a yaw head rake. The results provide a comparison of the aerodynamic characteristics of the two wing configurations at trimmed conditions for Mach numbers between 0.60 and 0.90. In the EET Lateral Controls Investigation, the control effectiveness of a conventional set of lateral controls was measured over a Mach number range from 0.60 to 0.90 on a high aspect ratio supercritical wing semispan model. The conventional controls included a high speed aileron, a low speed aileron, and six spoiler segments. The wing was designed so that the last 25% of the chord is removable to facilitate testing of various control systems. The current status and an indication of the data obtained in these investigations are presented

Application of antiresonance theory to helicopters
Antiresonance theory is the principle underlying nonresonant nodes in a structure, and covers both nonresonant nodes occurring naturally and those introduced by devices such as dynamic absorbers and antiresonant isolators. The dynamic antiresonant vibration isolator (DAVI) and the nodale module are examples of the applications of transfer antiresonances. It is shown that antiresonances are eigenvalues, and that they can be determined by matrix iteration. Applications of antiresonance theory to helicopter engineering problems, using the antiresonant eigenvalue equation are suggested

Recently, some discussions arose as to the definition of charge and the value
of the density of charge in stationary-current-carrying conductors. We stress
that the problem of charge definition comes from a misunderstanding of the
usual definition. We provide some theoretical elements which suggest that
positive and negative charge densities are equal in the frame of the positive

An evaluation of a constrained test method for obtaining free body responses
A method for obtaining free body responses from dynamic tests on a constrained structure is investigated for practical feasibility. The method is based on the principle that a constrained structure can be considered to be a free body acted upon by multiple forces which include the forces of constraint. By measuring these forces and by exciting the structure so as to develop linearly independent sets of forces, the response of the free body to one force at a time can be computed. Techniques for producing these independent forces are discussed. The development of the theory, computer simulations of tests of representative aerospace vehicles (including experimental error), and a description and listing of the computer programs developed are included. The procedure appears to be a practical method for obtaining in-flight characteristics of such vehicles
Identification of marsh vegetation and coastal land use in ERTS-1 imagery
Coastal vegetation species appearing in the ERTS-1 images taken of Delaware Bay on August 16, and October 10, 1972 have been correlated with ground truth vegetation maps and imagery obtained from high altitude RB-57 and U-2 overflights. The vegetation maps of the entire Delaware Coast were prepared during the summer of 1972 and checked out with ground truth data collected on foot, in small boats, and from low-altitude aircraft. Multispectral analysis of high altitude RB-57 and U-2 photographs indicated that five vegetation communities could be clearly discriminated from 60,000 feet altitude including: (1) salt marsh cord grass, (2) salt marsh hay and spike grass, (3) reed grass, (4) high tide bush and sea myrtle, and (5) a group of fresh water species found in impoundments built to attract water fowl. All of these species are shown in fifteen overlay maps, covering all of Delaware's wetlands prepared to match the USGS topographic map size of 1:24,000
Quantum Teleportation of Optical Quantum Gates
We show that a universal set of gates for quantum computation with optics can
be quantum teleported through the use of EPR entangled states, homodyne
detection, and linear optics and squeezing operations conditioned on
measurement outcomes. This scheme may be used for fault-tolerant quantum
computation in any optical scheme (qubit or continuous variable). The
teleportation of nondeterministic nonlinear gates employed in linear optics

Mechanisms that Limit Oxidative Phosphorylation during High-Intensity Muscle Contractions In Vivo
Skeletal muscle oxidative capacity plays a critical role in human health and disease. Although current models of oxidative phosphorylation sufficiently describe skeletal muscle energetics during moderate-intensity contractions, much is still unknown about the mechanisms that control and limit oxidative phosphorylation during high-intensity contractions. In particular, the oxygen cost of force generation is augmented during exercise at workloads above the lactate threshold. Presently, it is unclear whether this augmentation in muscle oxygen consumption is driven by increased rates of oxidative ATP synthesis (ATPOX) or by decreases in the efficiency of ATPOX due to mitochondrial uncoupling. To address this gap, 31P-MRS was used in two separate studies to measure rates of ATPOX at the end of: 1) repeated bouts of supramaximal knee extensions, and 2) each stage of an isotonic stepwise knee extension protocol. In both studies, high-intensity contractions impaired the maximal capacity for ATPOX and reduced the sensitivity of ATPOX to changes in ADP and cytosolic phosphorylation potential. However, high-intensity contractions did not cause rates of ATPOX to increase relative to workload, suggesting that the increased oxygen cost of exercise above the lactate threshold is due to changes in mitochondrial coupling control (i.e., P/O ratio)
