    Is Ambient Intelligence a truly Human-Centric Paradigm in Industry? Current Research and Application Scenario

    The use of pervasive networked devices is nowadays a reality in the service sector. It impacts almost all aspects of our daily lives, although most times we are not aware of its influence. This is a fundamental characteristic of the concept of Ambient Intelligence (AmI). Ambient Intelligence aims to change the form of human-computer interaction, focusing on the user needs so they can interact in a more seamless way, with emphasis on greater user-friendliness. The idea of recognizing people and their context situation is not new and has been successfully applied with limitations, for instance, in the health and military sectors. However its appearance in the manufacturing industry has been elusive. Could the concept of AmI turn the current shop floor into a truly human centric environment enabling comprehensive reaction to human presence and action?     Water Pricing and Social Equity in Portuguese Municipalities

    Water supply services are Services of General Interest (SGI), subject to specific public service obligations, such as universality, continuity, quality, affordability, transparency, and consumer protection. There is an extensive empirical literature on the design of optimal prices. However, these contributions tend to neglect the issue of universal service and equity concerning the volume of water for basic needs (the ‘essential minimum quantity’). Addressing this gap in the literature, and using empirical data for the Portuguese municipalities, this paper aims to evaluate whether income-related equity considerations are embodied in water supply Portuguese municipalities’ tariffs. Accordingly, essential minimum quantities of water for representative households are computed, and then compared with the lowest tariff block’s upper limit by water utility. Next, representative households are ranked by costs underlying essential minimum quantities and by income. This analysis also considers concentration curves and indexes which show that water bills are regressive, i.e., there is socioeconomic inequity favourable to the better-off representative households.Water Policy, Water Pricing, Social Equity, Efficient Water Use, Portugal.

    Diversity of the arthropod fauna in organically grown garlic intercropped with fodder radish.

    The cultivation of garlic faces several problems, which include pest attack, and the diversification of habitat through intercropping with attractive plants comes up as a method to pest management. The objective of this research was to verify the effect of the association of garlic with fodder radish on richness, abundance and diversity of arthropods under organic production system in Lavras, MG, Brazil. The treatments were composed of garlic in monoculture and garlic in association with fodder radish, in plots of 40 garlic plants, intercropped or not with two lines of fodder radish. Weekly, 25 samples were collected for a period of 10 weeks (n=250). Species accumulation curves, species richness, abundance, and diversity index were determined, and T or Mann-Whitney tests were used for analysis. The 250 samples collected were sufficient to register the majority of species present in garlic. Richness and abundance were higher in diversified garlic whereas diversity was higher in monoculture. Diversified system increased the overall richness of phytophagous species and parasitoids. The abundance of T. tabaci decreased, while increased the presence of A. fabae, demonstrating that the association was potentially beneficent to the culture. The possible reasons for these results are discussed, and future works should focus in the ecological mechanisms involved in crop diversification of organic garlic

    Evaluation of non-market goods: the relevance of considering “behavioural anomalies”

    Texto da comunicação apresentada a International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE) 2012 Conference, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, 16-19 de junho de 2012Environmental valuation techniques are intended to provide valuable insights in helping scientists and decision-makers to make informed choices about the trade-offs that are inherent to the scarcity restrictions of our daily decisions. However, among other limitations, values obtained on the assumption of a rational behaviour may only be of use for policy guidance if people make consistent and systematic choices. This research embraces the challenge of contributing to organize the complexities of valuation of non-market goods, rather than just ignoring them. We address the ongoing debate on symptoms of bounded rationality in studies applying stated or revealed preferences methods by examining the theoretically consistency of preferences using observed and intended behaviour without monetary values being directly asked. The environmental good considered in our empirical approach is a national wood (Mata do Bussaco), located in a European country (Portugal). Overall, the results reveal that visitors are sensitive to both price and quality changes. In the deterioration scenario, the intended number of trips would be seriously reduced and respondents would suffer an important welfare loss. Another key finding is the apparent inconsistency between preferences expressed by revealed and observed behaviour. As inconsistencies are detected for changes resulting from manager’s action, it is argued that they are likely the outcome of strategic behaviour

    A high level e-maintenance architecture to support on-site teams

    Emergent architectures and paradigms targeting reconfigurable manufacturing systems increasingly rely on intelligent modules to maximize the robustness and responsiveness of modern installations. Although intelligent behaviour significantly minimizes the occurrence of faults and breakdowns it does not exclude them nor can prevent equipment’s normal wear. Adequate maintenance is fundamental to extend equipments’ life cycle. It is of major importance the ability of each intelligent device to take an active role in maintenance support. Further this paradigm shift towards “embedded intelligence”, supported by cross platform technologies, induces relevant organizational and functional changes on local maintenance teams. On the one hand, the possibility of outsourcing maintenance activities, with the warranty of a timely response, through the use of pervasive networking technologies and, on the other hand, the optimization of local maintenance staff are some examples of how IT is changing the scenario in maintenance. The concept of e-maintenance is, in this context, emerging as a new discipline with defined socio-economic challenges. This paper proposes a high level maintenance architecture supporting maintenance teams’ management and offering contextualized operational support. All the functionalities hosted by the architecture are offered to the remaining system as network services. Any intelligent module, implementing the services’ interface, can report diagnostic, prognostic and maintenance recommendations that enable the core of the platform to decide on the best course of action

    A Simple Approach to Detect Anomalies in Microservices-Based Systems Using PyOD

    Ease of scale is one of the defining characteristics of microservices. However, with scalability comes the problem of diversity of services, making it very important to detect anomalies the soonest possible. Because it is recent, there are still few studies on the best approaches to detecting anomalies in microservices. This paper proposes the Python toolkit, PyOD, as an approach for microservice anomaly detection. This toolkit is composed of a set of anomaly detection algorithms, including classical LOF (SIGMOD2000) to the latest ECOD (TKDE2022). To evaluate the approach, we used two of its algorithms, k Nearest Neighbors (kNN) and Histogram-based Outlier Score (HBOS) to detect anomalies such as application bugs, CPU exhausted, and network jam on the TraceRCA dataset. This dataset contains logs from a real microservices system. The preliminary results show that HBOS algorithm performs better than kNN, with Recall and F1-Score of 93% and 89%, respectively, while for kNN these metrics were 92% and 85%, respectively
