Simulations of a weakly conducting droplet under the influence of an alternating electric field
We investigate the electrohydrodynamics of an initially spherical droplet
under the influence of an external alternating electric field by conducting
axisymmetric numerical simulations using a charge-conservative volume-of-fluid
based finite volume flow solver. The mean amplitude of shape oscillations of a
droplet subjected to an alternating electric field for leaky dielectric fluids
is the same as the steady-state deformation under an equivalent root mean
squared direct electric field for all possible electrical conductivity ratio
and permittivity ratio of the droplet to the surrounding fluid.
In contrast, our simulations for weakly conducting media show that this
equivalence between alternating and direct electric fields does not hold for
. Moreover, for a range of parameters, the deformation obtained
using the alternating and direct electric fields is qualitatively different,
i.e. for low and high , the droplet becomes prolate under alternating
electric field but deforms to an oblate shape in the case of the equivalent
direct electric field. A parametric study is conducted by varying the time
period of the applied alternating electric field, the permittivity and the
electrical conductivity ratios. It is observed that while increasing has
a negligible effect on the deformation dynamics of the droplet for , it
enhances the deformation of the droplet when for both alternating and
direct electric fields. We believe that our results may be of immense
consequence in explaining the morphological evolution of droplets in a plethora
of scenarios ranging from nature to biology.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
FORMULATION OF COUPLED PROBLEMS OF THERMOELASTICITY BY FINITE ELKMENTS
When designing mechanical equipment, in numerous cases thermal effects have to be taken
into consideration besides mechanical ones, especially if they are transient effects. In engineering
practice these thermomechanical problems can be described by the different theories of thermoelasticity
with adequate accuracy. This paper, after a brief survey of the basic equations of thermoelasticity,
demonstrates its formulation by the finite element method
Hiatoplasty with crura buttressing versus hiatoplasty alone during laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy
Introduction. In obese patients with hiatal hernia (HH), laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) with cruroplasty is an option but use of prosthetic mesh crura reinforcement is debated. The aim was to compare the results of hiatal closure with or without mesh buttressing during LSG. Methods. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) was assessed by the Health-Related Quality of Life (GERD-HRQL) questionnaire before and after surgery in two consecutive series of patients with esophageal hiatus ≤ 4 cm2. After LSG, patients in group A (12) underwent simple cruroplasty, whereas in group B patients (17), absorbable mesh crura buttressing was added. Results. At mean follow-up of 33.2 and 18.1 months for groups A and B, respectively (p = 0 006), the mean preoperative GERD-HRQL scores of 16.5 and 17.7 (p = 0 837) postoperatively became 9.5 and 2.4 (p = 0 071). In group A, there was no difference between pre- and postoperative scores (p = 0 279), whereas in group B, a highly significant difference was observed (p = 0 002). The difference (Δ) comparing pre- and postoperative mean scores between the two groups was significantly in favor of mesh placement (p = 0 0058). Conclusions. In obese patients with HH and mild-moderate GERD, reflux symptoms are significantly improved at medium term follow-up after cruroplasty with versus without crura buttressing during LSG.Introduction. Identification des sources de tolérance au stress hydrique sur des espèces sauvages de la famille des Cucurbitacées en cutlture in vitro
Identification of tolerance sources to the water stress on wild species of the cucurbitaceous family in in vitro culture. The objective of this survey is to identify sources of tolerance to the water stress. This will permit to choose the adequate material allowing the transfer of genes governing the drought tolerance to the gene pool of the main cultivated species. Indeed, a method has been developed to evaluate the water stress tolerance in vitro. It is based on the capacity of the calus recuperation after dehydration under a laminar flux hot until a loss of 50% of their fresh weight as a basis. The study included nine accessions of wild species and three cultivated varieties of the cucurbitaceous family. It comes out that the three cultivated varieties (melon, cucumber and watermelon), as well as some wild species accessions are sensitive to the water stress. The wild accessions of Cucumis africanus (L4), Cucumis dipsaceus, Citrullus colocynthis (Saudi Arabia) and Citrullus colocynthis (Niger) are obviously tolerant
Collective excitations and low temperature transport properties of bismuth
We examine the influence of collective excitations on the transport
properties (resistivity, magneto- optical conductivity) for semimetals,
focusing on the case of bismuth. We show, using an RPA approximation, that the
properties of the system are drastically affected by the presence of an
acoustic plasmon mode, consequence of the presence of two types of carriers
(electrons and holes) in this system. We found a crossover temperature T*
separating two different regimes of transport. At high temperatures T > T* we
show that Baber scattering explains quantitatively the DC resistivity
experiments, while at low temperatures T < T* interactions of the carriers with
this collective mode lead to a T^5 behavior of the resistivity. We examine
other consequences of the presence of this mode, and in particular predict a
two plasmon edge feature in the magneto-optical conductivity. We compare our
results with the experimental findings on bismuth. We discuss the limitations
and extensions of our results beyond the RPA approximation, and examine the
case of other semimetals such as graphite or 1T-TiSe_2
Planar Rayleigh scattering results in helium-air mixing experiments in a Mach-6 wind tunnel
Planar Rayleigh scattering measurements with an argon—fluoride excimer laser are performed to investigate helium mixing into air at supersonic speeds. The capability of the Rayleigh scattering technique for flow visualization of a turbulent environment is demonstrated in a large-scale, Mach-6 facility. The detection limit obtained with the present setup indicates that planar, quantitative measurements of density can be made over a large cross-sectional area (5 cm × 10 cm) of the flow field in the absence of clusters
On the heavy quark mass expansion for the operator Qbar gamma_5 Q and the charm content of eta, eta'
Recently in the context of studies of the intrinsic charm content of the
nucleon and of the eta' meson two groups have arrived at different results for
the 1/m^3 term of the heavy quark expansion for operator
differing by the factor of six. We show that the form of both results violates
certain general conditions. Using the expression for the axial anomaly with the
finite Pauli-Villars regularization we obtain a new expression for 1/m^3 term
of the heavy quark expansion for . With this new result we
obtain an estimate for the constant f_{\eta'}^{(c)}=-2 MeV.Comment: 4 page
