    Tunneling magnetoresistance in devices based on epitaxial NiMnSb with uniaxial anisotropy

    We demonstrate tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) junctions based on a tri layer system consisting of an epitaxial NiMnSb, aluminum oxide and CoFe tri layer. The junctions show a tunnelling magnetoresistance of Delta R/R of 8.7% at room temperature which increases to 14.7% at 4.2K. The layers show clear separate switching and a small ferromagnetic coupling. A uniaxial in plane anisotropy in the NiMnSb layer leads to different switching characteristics depending on the direction in which the magnetic field is applied, an effect which can be used for sensor applications.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Appl.     Spectral Properties of the Core and the VLBI-Jets of Cygnus A

    We present a detailed VLBI study of the spectral properties of the inner core region of the radio galaxy Cygnus A at 5 GHz, 15 GHz, 22 GHz, 43 GHz and 86 GHz. Our observations include an epoch using phase-referencing at 15 GHz and 22 GHz and the first successful VLBI observations of Cygnus A at 86 GHz. We find a pronounced two-sided jet structure, with a steep spectrum along the jet and an inverted spectrum towards the counter-jet. The inverted spectrum and the frequency-dependent jet-to-counter-jet ratio suggest that the inner counter-jet is covered by a circum-nuclear absorber as it is proposed by the unified scheme.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of the 7th EVN Symposium held in Toledo, Spain in October 2004, needs evn2004.cl

    Phase diagrams of the 2D t-t'-U Hubbard model from an extended mean field method

    It is well-known from unrestricted Hartree-Fock computations that the 2D Hubbard model does not have homogeneous mean field states in significant regions of parameter space away from half filling. This is incompatible with standard mean field theory. We present a simple extension of the mean field method that avoids this problem. As in standard mean field theory, we restrict Hartree-Fock theory to simple translation invariant states describing antiferromagnetism (AF), ferromagnetism (F) and paramagnetism (P), but we use an improved method to implement the doping constraint allowing us to detect when a phase separated state is energetically preferred, e.g. AF and F coexisting at the same time. We find that such mixed phases occur in significant parts of the phase diagrams, making them much richer than the ones from standard mean field theory. Our results for the 2D t-t'-U Hubbard model demonstrate the importance of band structure effects.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Second order perturbation theory for embedded eigenvalues

    We study second order perturbation theory for embedded eigenvalues of an abstract class of self-adjoint operators. Using an extension of the Mourre theory, under assumptions on the regularity of bound states with respect to a conjugate operator, we prove upper semicontinuity of the point spectrum and establish the Fermi Golden Rule criterion. Our results apply to massless Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonians for arbitrary coupling.Comment: 30 pages, 2 figure

    Zusammenfassung: Der Morbus Darier ist eine seltene Hauterkrankung, die autosomal-dominant vererbt wird und durch eine Mutation im SERCA (sarco/endoplasmatic reticulum calcium transporter)-2-Gen verursacht wird. In einigen StammbĂ€umen ist das Auftreten des Morbus Darier eng mit dem Vorkommen affektiver Erkrankungen verknĂŒpft. Die wahrscheinlichste Ursache ist ein SuszeptibilitĂ€tsgen fĂŒr affektive Erkrankungen in der NĂ€he des SERCA-2-Gens. Als SuszeptibilitĂ€tslokus konnte eine 6,5-Mb-Region identifiziert werden. Auch Studien mit affektiv erkrankten Stichproben, die nicht an Morbus Darier leiden, weisen ein Signal in der gleichen Region auf. Das zugrunde liegende Gen ist jedoch noch nicht identifizier

    Effects of Vapor Injected Compression, Hybrid Evaporator Flow Control, and Other Parameters on Seasonal Energy Efficiency.

    A companion paper (Bach et al. 2014) experimentally investigated the effects of vapor injected compression and hybrid evaporator flow control on capacity and COP. The goal of this paper is to provide insight into the effects of these technologies on heating seasonal performance (HSPF). HSPF was calculated using a modified version of the ANSI/AHRI 210/240 method, and parametric studies were performed to better understand the seasonal performance with a focus on comparing vapor injected and single stage system configuration. It was found that part load degradation and reduced capacity at low ambient temperature are factors that can degrade the seasonal performance. The increase in heat pump COP for the vapor injected configuration leads to only a small benefit - the main contributor to the increased HSPF of the vapor injected system configuration is its increased capacity towards low ambient temperatures.     Interleaved Circuitry And Hybrid Control As Means To Reduce The Effects Of Flow Maldistribution.

    Flow maldistribution in evaporators can lead to significant degradation of capacity and efficiency of vapor compression equipment. A significant amount of work has previously been done to mend these issues. For variable air flow maldistribution, refrigerant compensation was proposed to reduce the performance degradation. For fixed air side maldistribution, refrigerant circuitry modifications were proposed to significantly reduce the effects of the maldistribution. However, no work has been found on modifying the refrigerant circuitry to make it less vulnerable to varying air side maldistribution. The purpose of this paper is to fill this gap in open literature. The performance of the new, interleaved circuitry approach and an active refrigerant flow control is compared to the standard circuitry for different cases of maldistribution. The results show that the interleaved circuitry recovers less of the performance losses than equalization of the exit superheats. However, the implementation cost in an actual system is expected to be significantly lower and the long term reliability is expected to be much better than for an active control approach
