    At the biodynamic farm Juchowo, 7 pairs of dairy cows from 2 breeds (Holstein (HF) and Brown Swiss (BS)) were milk sampled in summer and in winter. Cows are grazed in summer and fed hay in winter. Differences in the milk fatty acid profile were evaluated for effects of month (fodder), breed and individual cows. The most important way to improve the FA quality is through grazing of fresh grass. Therefor milk from grass based systems should be preferred. Overall breed effects were small, but there are still possibilities present to select individual cows to get an improved FA quality profile in terms of CLA, n-3 FA and delta-9-desaturase activity

    Concept of Contamination Control Door for DEMO and Proof of Principle Design

    During the maintenance period of a future fusion reactor power plant, called DEMOnstration Power Plant (DEMO), remotely handled casks are required to confine and handle DEMO in-vessel components during their transportation between the reactor and the active maintenance facility. In order to limit the dispersion of activated dust, a Contamination Control Door (CCD) is designed to be placed at an interface between separable containments (e.g., vacuum vessels and casks) to inhibit the release of contamination at the interface between them. The remotely operated CCD—technically, a double lidded door system—consists of two separable doors (the cask door and port door) and three different locking mechanisms: (i) between the cask door and cask, (ii) between the cask door and port door and (iii) between the port door and port. The locking mechanisms are selected and assessed according to different criteria, and the structure of the CCD is optimized using an Abaqus Topology Optimization Module. Due to the elastic properties of the CCD, deflections will occur during the lifting procedure, which may lead to malfunctions of the CCD. A test rig is developed to investigate the performance of high-risk components in the CCD in the case of deflections and also malpositioning. Misalignment can be induced along three axes and three angles intentionally to test the single components and items. The aim is to identify a possible range of operating in the case of misalignments. It is expected that the proposed CCD design should be able to operate appropriately in the case of ±3 mm translational misalignments and ±1° rotational misalignments

    Although since 1924 the biodynamic hornpreparations (cowhorn manure and cowhorn silica) have been practically used and investigated in several doctoral theses, hardly any attention has been paid at the scientific evaluation and explanation of their effects. The results of experimental studies with the preparations are summarized. To understand their mechanism, an ecological and ecophysiological focus can be used. It shows that at several levels of the agro-ecosystem regulative mechanisms can be found. Bacterial and hormonal effects are found, if the preparations are analysed. These scientific results should be understood and discussed in relation to the anthroposophical or esoteric understanding of the biodynamic preparations

    Shaping the Next Incarnation of Business Intelligence - Towards a Flexibly Governed Network of Information Integration and Analysis Capabilities

    The body of knowledge generated by Business Intelligence (BI) research is constantly extended by a stream of heterogeneous technological and or- ganizational innovations. This paper shows how these can be bundled to a new vision for BI that is aligned with new requirements coming from socio- technical macro trends. The building blocks of the vision come from five research strings that have been ex- tracted from an extensive literature re- view: BI and Business Process Man- agement, BI across enterprise borders, new approaches of dealing with un- structured data, agile and user-driven BI, and new concepts for BI gover- nance. The macro trend of the diffu- sion of cyber-physical systems is used to illustrate the argumentation. The realization of this vision comes with an array of open research ques- tions and requires the coordination of research initiatives from a variety of dis- ciplines. Due to the embedded nature of the addressed topics within gen- eral research areas of the Information Systems (IS) discipline and the linking pins that come with the underlying Dynamic Capabilities Approach such research provides a contribution to IS

    The effects of response probability on commission errors in high go low no-go dual response versions of the sustained attention to response task (SART)

    In the current investigation, we modified the high Go low No-Go Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART) by replacing the single response on Go trials with a dual response (dual response SART or DR SART). In three experiments a total of 80 participants completed the SART and versions of the DR SART in which response probabilities varied from 50-50, through 70-30 to 90-10. The probability of No-Go withhold stimuli was .11 in all experiments. Using a dynamic utility based model proposed by Peebles and Bothell (2004) we predicted that the 50-50 DR-SART would dramatically reduce commission errors. Additionally, the model predicted that the probability of commission errors to be an increasing function of response frequency. Both predictions were confirmed. Although the increasing rate of commission errors with response probability can also be accommodated by the rationale originally proposed for the SART by its creators (Robertson, Manly, Andrade, Baddeley, & Yiend, 1997) the fact that the current DR SART results and SART findings in general can be accommodated by a utility model without need for any attention processes is a challenge to views that ascribe commission errors to lapses of sustained attention

    EU DEMO Remote Maintenance System development during the Pre-Concept Design Phase

    During the EU DEMO Pre-Concept Design Phase, the remote maintenance team developed maintenance strategies and systems to meet the evolving plant maintenance requirements. These were constrained by the proposed tokamak architecture and the challenging environments but considered a range of port layouts and handling system designs. The design-driving requirements were to have short maintenance durations and to demonstrate power plant relevant technologies. Work concentrated on the in-vessel maintenance systems, where the design constraints are the most challenging and the potential impact on the plant design is highest. A robust blanket handling system design was not identified during the Pre-Concept Design Phase. Novel enabling technologies were identified and, where these were critical to the maintenance strategy and not being pursued elsewhere, proof-of-principle designs were developed and tested. Technology development focused on pipe joining systems such as laser bore cutting and welding, pipe alignment, and on the control systems for handling massive blankets. Maintenance studies were also conducted on the ex-vessel plant to identify the additional transport volumes required to support the plant layout. The strategic implications of using vessel casks, and of using containment cells with cell casks, was explored. This was motivated by the costs associated with the storage of casks, one of several ex-vessel systems that can drive the overall plant layout. This paper introduces the remote maintenance system designs, describes the main developments and achievements, and presents conclusions, lessons learned and recommendations for future work

    Your Unconscious Knows Your Name

    One's own name constitutes a unique part of conscious awareness – but does this also hold true for unconscious processing? The present study shows that the own name has the power to bias a person's actions unconsciously even in conditions that render any other name ineffective. Participants judged whether a letter string on the screen was a name or a non-word while this target stimulus was preceded by a masked prime stimulus. Crucially, the participant's own name was among these prime stimuli and facilitated reactions to following name targets whereas the name of another, yoked participant did not. Signal detection results confirmed that participants were not aware of any of the prime stimuli, including their own name. These results extend traditional findings on “breakthrough” phenomena of personally relevant stimuli to the domain of unconscious processing. Thus, the brain seems to possess adroit mechanisms to identify and process such stimuli even in the absence of conscious awareness
