    Exploring the Referral and Usage of Science Fiction in HCI Literature

    Research on science fiction (sci-fi) in scientific publications has indicated the usage of sci-fi stories, movies or shows to inspire novel Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research. Yet no studies have analysed sci-fi in a top-ranked computer science conference at present. For that reason, we examine the CHI main track for the presence and nature of sci-fi referrals in relationship to HCI research. We search for six sci-fi terms in a dataset of 5812 CHI main proceedings and code the context of 175 sci-fi referrals in 83 papers indexed in the CHI main track. In our results, we categorize these papers into five contemporary HCI research themes wherein sci-fi and HCI interconnect: 1) Theoretical Design Research; 2) New Interactions; 3) Human-Body Modification or Extension; 4) Human-Robot Interaction and Artificial Intelligence; and 5) Visions of Computing and HCI.     Anti-Endothelial Cell Antibodies are not frequently elevated in hospitalized patients with COVID-19

    COVID-19 is now established to be associated with a thrombotic phenomenon, now called COVID-19 associated coagulopathy (CAC). Anti-Endothelial Cell Antibodies (AECA) are a heterogenous group of autoantibodies targeting various endothelial cell antigens or antigens adhering to endothelial cells, They are commonly observed in a variety of auto-immune and rheumatologic conditions, and were observed in patients with the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2005. We aimed to assess AECA status in patients with COVID-19 and their potential contributing role to endothelial injury and CAC. AECA identification was a relatively infrequent finding in COVID-19 patients on admission, and their presence, albeit in only 2/33 patients, was not associated with disease severity. However, as the autoantibodies were only measured at admission, we cannot exclude the possibility of pathogenic AECA developing later in the course of diseaseFurther studies using additional methods are needed to evaluate the presence and potential pathogenic role of AECA in later stages of COVID-19

    Non-steady state operation of polymer/TiO2 photovoltaic devices

    We present data on the initial period of operation of Gilch-route NMH-PPV/TiO2 composite solar cells (CSCs) which show that during this period the CSCs operate in a non-steady state regime. The behavior is complex and may include a gradual rise of the open circuit voltage (V-oc) and of the short-circuit current density (J(sc)) with time, a passage through a maximum of either or both parameters, and even a sign reversal. The mechanisms most probably contributing to the transient processes are: i) diffusion driven redistribution of charges resulting in the build up of a quasi steady state charge density profile across the device; ii) photo-doping resulting in a relatively slow increase of the average charge carrier concentration and consequently of the conductivity of the device. The latter is responsible for a strong decrease in V-oc, and is evidenced by the significant increase in dark current after device illumination

    Nanocomposite titanium dioxide/polymer photovoltaic cells: effects of TiO2 microstructure, time and illumination power.

    Nanocomposite titanium dioxide/polymer photovoltaic cells have been fabricated using poly[2-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-5-methoxy-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEHPPV). Two different types of titanium dioxide were used, one synthesized using a sol-gel method, the other was a commercial paste. The crystal structure, porosity and absorption spectra of the titanium dioxide layers were measured, and the titanium dioxide synthesized using the sol-gel method had a much lower level of anatase. The photovoltaic properties of the ITO/TiO2/MEHPPV/Au cells, which were similar for both types of TiO2, were measured as a function of illumination power and compared with equivalent circuit models. A simple equivalent circuit model incorporating a diode, two resistances and a light induced current was inconsistent with the illumination - dependent data and was improved by adding an illumination dependent shunt resistance. A very long lived, photo-induced increase in dark current was observed, which could not be explained by a polymer degradation mechanism or an increase in temperature under illumination, but was more likely to be due to trapped charge

    The Cosmic Infrared Background: Measurements and Implications

    The cosmic infrared background records much of the radiant energy released by processes of structure formation that have occurred since the decoupling of matter and radiation following the Big Bang. In the past few years, data from the Cosmic Background Explorer mission provided the first measurements of this background, with additional constraints coming from studies of the attenuation of TeV gamma-rays. At the same time there has been rapid progress in resolving a significant fraction of this background with the deep galaxy counts at infrared wavelengths from the Infrared Space Observatory instruments and at submillimeter wavelengths from the Submillimeter Common User Bolometer Array instrument.     Exoplanets and SETI

    The discovery of exoplanets has both focused and expanded the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The consideration of Earth as an exoplanet, the knowledge of the orbital parameters of individual exoplanets, and our new understanding of the prevalence of exoplanets throughout the galaxy have all altered the search strategies of communication SETI efforts, by inspiring new "Schelling points" (i.e. optimal search strategies for beacons). Future efforts to characterize individual planets photometrically and spectroscopically, with imaging and via transit, will also allow for searches for a variety of technosignatures on their surfaces, in their atmospheres, and in orbit around them.
