Influence of hand position on the near-effect in 3D attention
Voluntary reorienting of attention in real depth situations is characterized by an attentional bias to locations near the viewer once attention is deployed to a spatially cued object in depth. Previously this effect (initially referred to as the ‘near-effect’) was attributed to access of a 3D viewer-centred spatial representation for guiding attention in 3D space. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the near-bias could have been associated with the position of the response-hand, always near the viewer in previous studies investigating endogenous attentional shifts in real depth. In Experiment 1, the response-hand was placed at either the near or far target depth in a depth cueing task. Placing the response-hand at the far target depth abolished the near-effect, but failed to bias spatial attention to the far location. Experiment 2 showed that the response-hand effect was not modulated by the presence of an additional passive hand, whereas Experiment 3 confirmed that attentional prioritization of the passive hand was not masked by the influence of the responding hand on spatial attention in Experiment 2. The pattern of results is most consistent with the idea that response preparation can modulate spatial attention within a 3D viewer-centred spatial representation
Which executive functioning deficits are associated with AD/HD, ODD/CD and comorbid AD/HD+ODD/CD?
Item does not contain fulltextThis study investigated (1) whether attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is associated with executive functioning (EF) deficits while controlling for oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD), (2) whether ODD/CD is associated with EF deficits while controlling for AD/HD, and (3)~whether a combination of AD/HD and ODD/CD is associated with EF deficits (and the possibility that there is no association between EF deficits and AD/HD or ODD/CD in isolation). Subjects were 99~children ages 6–12 years. Three putative domains of EF were investigated using well-validated tests: verbal fluency, working memory, and planning. Independent of ODD/CD, AD/HD was associated with deficits in planning and working memory, but not in verbal fluency. Only teacher rated AD/HD, but not parent rated AD/HD, significantly contributed to the prediction of EF task performance. No EF deficits were associated with ODD/CD. The presence of comorbid AD/HD accounts for the EF deficits in children with comorbid AD/HD+ODD/CD. These results suggest that EF deficits are unique to AD/HD and support the model proposed by R. A. Convergent recombination suppression suggests role of sexual selection in guppy sex chromosome formation.
Sex chromosomes evolve once recombination is halted between a homologous pair of chromosomes. The dominant model of sex chromosome evolution posits that recombination is suppressed between emerging X and Y chromosomes in order to resolve sexual conflict. Here we test this model using whole genome and transcriptome resequencing data in the guppy, a model for sexual selection with many Y-linked colour traits. We show that although the nascent Y chromosome encompasses nearly half of the linkage group, there has been no perceptible degradation of Y chromosome gene content or activity. Using replicate wild populations with differing levels of sexually antagonistic selection for colour, we also show that sexual selection leads to greater expansion of the non-recombining region and increased Y chromosome divergence. These results provide empirical support for longstanding models of sex chromosome catalysis, and suggest an important role for sexual selection and sexual conflict in genome evolution
Low level constraints on dynamic contour path integration
Contour integration is a fundamental visual process. The constraints on integrating
discrete contour elements and the associated neural mechanisms have typically been
investigated using static contour paths. However, in our dynamic natural environment
objects and scenes vary over space and time. With the aim of investigating the
parameters affecting spatiotemporal contour path integration, we measured human
contrast detection performance of a briefly presented foveal target embedded in
dynamic collinear stimulus sequences (comprising five short 'predictor' bars appearing
consecutively towards the fovea, followed by the 'target' bar) in four experiments. The
data showed that participants' target detection performance was relatively unchanged
when individual contour elements were separated by up to 2° spatial gap or 200ms
temporal gap. Randomising the luminance contrast or colour of the predictors, on the
other hand, had similar detrimental effect on grouping dynamic contour path and
subsequent target detection performance. Randomising the orientation of the
predictors reduced target detection performance greater than introducing misalignment
relative to the contour path. The results suggest that the visual system integrates
dynamic path elements to bias target detection even when the continuity of path is
disrupted in terms of spatial (2°), temporal (200ms), colour (over 10 colours) and
luminance (-25% to 25%) information. We discuss how the findings can be largely
reconciled within the functioning of V1 horizontal connections
Facial expression training optimises viewing strategy in children and adults
This study investigated whether training-related improvements in facial expression categorization are facilitated by spontaneous changes in gaze behaviour in adults and nine-year old children. Four sessions of a self-paced, free-viewing training task required participants to categorize happy, sad and fear expressions with varying intensities. No instructions about eye movements were given. Eye-movements were recorded in the first and fourth training session. New faces were introduced in session four to establish transfer-effects of learning. Adults focused most on the eyes in all sessions and increased expression categorization accuracy after training coincided with a strengthening of this eye-bias in gaze allocation. In children, training-related behavioural improvements coincided with an overall shift in gaze-focus towards the eyes (resulting in more adult-like gaze-distributions) and towards the mouth for happy faces in the second fixation. Gaze-distributions were not influenced by the expression intensity or by the introduction of new faces. It was proposed that training enhanced the use of a uniform, predominantly eyes-biased, gaze strategy in children in order to optimise extraction of relevant cues for discrimination between subtle facial expressions

Implementation of the Cognitive Daisy (COG-D) for improving care planning and delivery for residents with dementia in care homes: results of a feasibility randomised controlled trial
Background
Many residents in care homes for older adults live with dementia. Understanding the unique profiles of cognitive impairments for each resident is important for person-centred care, yet information about specific cognitive problems is limited, and knowledge varies. This study explored the feasibility of implementing the Cognitive Daisy (COG-D) intervention, which provide a visual summary in the shape of a 15-petal flower derived from the scores on a neuropsychological assessment battery, in care homes for older adults.
Methods
A parallel-group feasibility cluster randomised controlled trial (cRCT) was conducted over 24 months. Eight care homes were randomised in a 1:1 ratio to either usual care plus the Cognitive Daisy intervention (COG-D) or usual care (control). Care staff were trained on how to use Cognitive Daisies and/or on how to conduct the COG-D assessments with residents. Cognitive Daisies were displayed in residents’ rooms and included in care plans. COG-D assessments were repeated after 6 months. The primary objective was to explore areas of uncertainty for a future large-scale trial including recruitment rates and intervention implementation and adherence. Secondary objectives were to explore signals of effects in candidate outcome measures for residents and staff, obtained at baseline and 6- and 9-month post-randomisation. A process evaluation explored barriers and facilitators to intervention implementation through care-plan audits (to explore recommendations in response to COG-D assessments), interviews and focus groups with staff, residents and relatives.
Results
Resident recruitment (n = 115) and staff recruitment (n = 99) in 8 care homes exceeded targets (100 and 50, respectively, in 8–10 care homes). Staff training was perceived positively with high completion rates (77.1% and 83.3% for basic and advanced training, respectively). Completion rates were also high for COG-D assessments (75.5% for assessment 1, and 72.5% of these residents completed assessment 2), and COG-D scores remained stable across the two assessment points. No clear signals of effects were found for candidate outcome measures. Number of recommendations in care plans varied across care homes, and interviews/focus groups highlighted several barriers to staff’s use of the Cognitive Daisies in daily practice.
Conclusion
Findings indicate trial delivery was feasible. However, the COG-D requires modification if it is to be feasibly implemented in care home settings
