    Work stress and job satisfaction among Malaysian antidrug professionals: the mediating role of coping strategies

    Recent studies have suggested that coping strategies can mediate the relationship between work stress and job satisfaction in working adults. However, the role of coping strategies as a mediator on the relationships had not been proven, particularly among antidrug professionals in Malaysia. Thus, the purpose of this study was twofold. First, to examine the relationships between work stress and job satisfaction. Second, to investigate the mediating effect of coping strategies on the relationships. A total of 3,356 participants (69% males; aged between 21 and 59 years) completed an online survey that measured job satisfaction, control and avoidant coping strategies, and work stress. The results indicated that work stress was related to job satisfaction. Furthermore, the serial mediation test revealed that the relations between work stress and job satisfaction were mediated by both control and avoidant coping. The present study suggests that adopting positive-type coping strategies such as control coping can be effective in tackling stress at workplace, and indirectly contribute to job satisfaction

    Job stress and depression among Malaysian anti-drug professionals: The moderating role of job-related coping strategies

    Depression can cause negative consequences to workers' health and social functioning, such as poor work productivity, mental disorders, and suicide. Existing studies have argued that job stress is closely related to depression in many professions. Yet, information on how coping strategies play a significant role in the relationships among Malaysian anti-drug professionals is still scarce. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine to what extent coping strategies moderate the relationship between job stress and depression among Malaysian anti-drug professionals. A total of 3,356 National Antidrug Agency (NADA) officers aged between 21 and 59 years completed online self-report measures of depression, job stress, and job-related control coping and avoidant coping behaviors. The results showed that job stress was strongly correlated with depression, and both coping strategies were found to significantly moderate the correlations. The correlations between stress and depression were stronger among participants who had higher levels of avoidant coping or those who had lower levels of control coping. To conclude, this study highlights the importance of considering job stress and coping behaviors to understand anti-drug professionals' mental health during this challenging COVID-19 pandemic

    Motives for aggression can be reactive or proactive. While research on these motives for aggression exists in Western societies, little is known about their prevalence in a non-Western society such as Malaysia. The first step to narrow this gap is to validate an instrument, which measures levels of reactive and proactive aggression. In the present study we translated the instrument for reactive and proactive aggression (IRPA) self-report, and examined its psychometric properties in 957 Malaysian adolescents. Participants completed the IRPA self-report along with instruments measuring victimization, anger, shame, and guilt. The outcomes confirmed the expected two-factor structure, good internal consistency and validity of the IRPA self-report in a Malaysian sample

    Social preference towards reactive aggression among justice-involved adolescents in Malaysia

    Low social preference has been found to produce aggression as a maladaptive outcome and response among adolescents. However, it is not clear whether the factors of social preference contribute to aggression. Therefore, the present study investigates whether the factors of social preference, namely, insult, ignorance, accusation, and physical attacks/bossiness, predict reactive aggression. Using cluster sampling, questionnaires were administered to 183 juveniles enrolled in government-approved schools in four geographical regions throughout West Malaysia. Data gathered was then analyzed via the Structural Equation Modelling-Analysis of a Moment Structures (SEM-AMOS) Version 23.0 approach. Findings showed all factors significantly and positively predicted reactive aggression. Future studies should implement diverse and well-defined measures to better understand how social preference can determine reactive aggressive behaviors. Implications of imitating the aggressive behaviors of other adolescents, internalizing aggressive victimization experiences, forming of healthy peer support from non-deviant socialization as an intervention, and implementing early intervention during adolescent development were discussed
