Zinc blende ZnS (001) surface structure investigated by XPS,LEED and DFT

The formation and stability of a sulfur-rich surface of the zinc blende ZnS (001) single crystal have been examined by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. LEED patterns obtained from ZnS (001) surface prepared in ultrahigh vacuum conditions are compatible to the formation of the ($1 \times 2$) reconstruction. Further XPS investigation is consistent with the conversion of the surface region into a sulfur-rich surface. DFT calculations support the S-richer ZnS surface hypothesis and the indirect notion of increasing in the conductivity of such a new structure.Comment: Article in submission process ; 25 pages, 3 figures. Ultrafast Nanocrystalline-TiO2(B)/Carbon Nanotube Hyperdispersion Prepared via Combined Ultracentrifugation and Hydrothermal Treatments for Hybrid Supercapacitors

Anisotropically grown (b-axis short) single-nano TiO2 (B), uniformly hyper-dispersed on the surface of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), was successfully synthesized via an in situ ultracentrifugation (UC) process coupled with a follow-up hydrothermal treatment. The uc-TiO2 (B)/MWCNT composite materials enable ultrafast Li(+) intercalation especially along the b-axis, resulting in a capacity of 235 mA h g(-1) per TiO2 (B) even at 300C (1C = 335 mA g(-1) )

Oxygen Vacancies Evoked Blue TiO2(B) Nanobelts with Efficiency Enhancement in Sodium Storage Behaviors

© 2017 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim Oxygen vacancies (OVs) dominate the physical and chemical properties of metal oxides, which play crucial roles in the various fields of applications. Density functional theory calculations show the introduction of OVs in TiO 2 (B) gives rise to better electrical conductivity and lower energy barrier of sodiation. Here, OVs evoked blue TiO 2 (B) (termed as B-TiO 2 (B)) nanobelts are successfully designed upon the basis of electronically coupled conductive polymers to TiO 2 , which is confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The superiorities of OVs with the aid of carbon encapsulation lead to higher capacity (210.5 mAh g −1 (B-TiO 2 (B)) vs 102.7 mAh g −1 (W-TiO 2 (B)) at 0.5 C) and remarkable long-term cyclability (the retention of 94.4% at a high rate of 10 C after 5000 times). In situ X-ray diffractometer analysis spectra also confirm that an enlarged interlayer spacing stimulated by OVs is beneficial to accommodate insertion and removal of sodium ions to accelerate storage kinetics and preserve its original crystal structure. The work highlights that injecting OVs into metal oxides along with carbon coating is an effective strategy for improving capacity and cyclability performances in other metal oxide based electrochemical energy systems
