Effects of Motivation on Test Performance of First Year Covenant University Students
This study examined the effect of motivation on test performance of first year Covenant University students,
Ota, Ogun State. The study adopted pre-test, post-test experimental design. Data for the study were obtained
from sixty (60) students with age range between 15 and 18 years (average age = 16.5 years). Participants were
randomly assigned to three conditions using independent group design. The independent and dependent
variables were motivation and test performance respectively. The two hypotheses were analysed using Mann-
Whitney U test. The result shows a significant difference between the result of the unrewarded students in the
control group and students rewarded with verbal praise in the experimental group (U = 61.000, N1 = 20, N2 =
20, p< 0.05, one-tailed). There was also a significant difference between the result of the students rewarded with
primary reinforcers and the unrewarded students in the control group (U = 45.000, N1 = 20, N2 = 20, p< 0.05,
one-tailed). This study justifies the importance of motivation on test performance. To improve students’
academic performance, teachers are encouraged to motivate their students.

Teacher Readiness to Integrate Information Technology into Teaching and Learning Processes in Nigerian Secondary Schools: A Case Study
The first mission statement of Nigerian National policy for InformationTechnology (IT) is to use IT for education and a major underlining factor in achieving the goals of the National IT policy is the readiness of teachers to use IT. It is against this background that this study was set to investigate the readiness of teachers in Nigeria to integrate IT in instruction. Three research questions were generated and answered in the study. The study adopted the descriptive survey design using two questionnaires (Teachers Information Technology Preparedness Questionnaire and Basic Information Technology Practical Skills Activities) to collect data from a total of 470 teachers who were selected through the simple random sampling technique. Data analysis for the research questions was done through the use of simple percentage and frequency calculation. The results revealed that majority of the teachers have low level of knowledge about IT. In the same vein, majority of teachers in the schools in this study did not have adequate IT skills. However, the teachers have positive attitude toward the use of information technology
Socio-Economic Implications of Family Size on Child Health in Ibadan, Oyo State
The general effect of family sizes on the health of individual has aroused concerns and remained the focus of many researchers with negligible attention on children. This study examined the socio-economic implications of family size on the health of children in Oyo state. The research adopted a descriptive and cross-sectional survey design with Epidemiological transition theory as its theoretical framework for explanation. Data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire administered to 420 randomly selected respondents from 8 selected communities in Ibadan North East local government, Ibadan. Quantitative data was analyzed using the statistical package for the social sciences using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages and chi-square. The mean age of respondents was 38 years, only 26.1% had tertiary education, while a huge majority (80.3%) earned a monthly of income less than 30,000 naira. More than half of the respondents 52.4% had four or more children and shared a room. A significant association existed (x2=23.278, P<0.05) between the type of family and the number of children. Majority of the respondents with four or more children who shared a room reported their children often experienced catarrh (66.7%), typhoid fever (65.9%), malaria (66.0%) and measles (66.7%). The occurrence of hazards was connected to the number of children in a family which was largely influenced by parents’ socio-economic status. There is need to enlighten parents from low socio-economic status on the effect of large family sizes on children’s health in other to curb child morbidity and mortality. Effect of Fiscal and Monetary Policies on Industrial Sector Performance- Evidence from Nigeria
We unearth the impact of monetary and fiscal policies (i.e. stabilization policies) on the performance of the manufacturing sector as a real sector in Nigeria, using an error correction mechanisms model, and discover that those policies has expected impact on output of the manufacturing sector in Nigeria both in the short-run and long-run. Relationship among the stabilization policies on one hand and industrial or manufacturing sector out put on the other hand. The model makes use of time series data while ordinary least squared was the techniques of analysis, the data were filtered with use of augmented dickey fuller unit root test while Johansen co-integration test was used to justify the long-run relationship among all included variables. While the error correction model serves the basis for adjustment from short-run drift (disequilibrium) to long-run equilibrium through its speed of adjustment. The research work established that stabilization policy has a great impact on manufacturing sector performance and that if certain adjustment are made it would better the lots of the people by developing the sector, through Government fiscal policy and its monetary policy measures. Lemon Juice Enhances Antioxidant Nutritional Quality of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicon)
The tomato plant is economically important and nutritionally beneficial to man. It is perishable in nature and preserved traditionally using lemon juice. The effects of this practice on antioxidant nutrients of this global vegetable food crop were investigated in this study. Tomatoes were preserved in four jars labelled 1 to 4. Jar 1 contained peeled, ground tomatoes (PG) and peeled non-ground tomatoes (PNG) without lemon juice. Jar 2 contained peeled, ground tomatoes and peeled non-ground with lemon juice (PG+LJ and PNG+LJ). Jar 3 contained unpeeled, ground tomatoes (UPG) and unpeeled non-ground (UPNG) samples while jar 4 contained unpeeled, ground and unpeeled non-ground samples with lemon juice (UPG+LJ and UPNG +LJ). The samples were analyzed for their antioxidant contents. Results revealed that concentration of ascorbic acid in tomato samples preserved with lemon juice varied from 14.70 – 20.30mg/100g FW. The values were significantly different (p<0.05) from the controls (PG, UPG, UPNG and PNG). The total phenolics content of lemon juice preserved tomatoes were also significantly different (p<0.05) from the control samples with UPNG+LJ having the highest phenolics content of 12.90mg/100g. The value of flavonoids ranged from 1.51 (PNG) to 2.95mg/100g (UPG+LJ) while ?-Carotene was from 1.78mg/100g (PNG+LJ) to 4.68mg/100g (PG+LJ). The unpeeled samples generally had higher antioxidant nutrients in comparison with the peeled samples. This study is relevant to the tomato canning industry and suggests that the use of lemon juice as tomato preservative agent should be encouraged. Environmental Factors And Strategic Marketing Planning In Nigerian Insurance Industry
The Nigerian insurance industry is saddled with the responsibility of financing economicactivities and underwriting risks resulting from uncertainties created by the volatileNigerian marketing environment. In performing this role, insurance companies are facedwith multiplicity of problems and challenges that undermine their ability to deliver qualityservices at reasonable cost. The present study was designed to examine the relationshipbetween environmental factors and strategic marketing planning in the selected NigerianInsurance Companies. The five companies selected for the study are Niger Insurance,Cornerstone Insurance, NEM Insurance, Crusader Insurance and Industrial and GeneralInsurance Company. The study obtained secondary data spanning between 1999 and 2013.In addition, 246 top and middle managers were administered questionnaire. The result ofthis study revealed a positive relationship between environmental factors and strategicmarketing planning (R = 0.78, R2 = 0.61).This means that environmental factors havepositive influence and effect on strategic marketing planning in Nigerian insurancecompanies. The study findings revealed that environmental factors have relationship withstrategic marketing planning among the selected insurance companies. The findingsfurther showed that social responsibility, service scopes, and service culture gave P valuesof 0.000, 0.019, and 0.000 respectively which are less than 0.05 (< 0.05). However, employeesatisfaction is negatively related to environmental factors (4 = -0.017). The study concludesthat the major problem of strategic marketing planning in the insurance industry was theirinability to develop necessary manpower and on- the- job training to meet the needs andexpectations of customers. Based on the findings, it was recommended that if theenvironment of service delivery was critical to strategic marketing planning, then, serviceorganisations should scan the environment before designing it. Implication of the study isthat environmental factors are major factor that must be considered when designingstrategic marketing planning by insurance firms. Successful strategic marketing planningrequires scanning the organizational environment and analyzing its internal situation. These inward and outward views are the backbone of strategic marketing planning
Is Election a Disadvantage? Nigerian Local Councils and Security Provision
Deepening democracy through local elections is a major aim of decentralisation. But do elections always work to strengthen the relationship between local politicians and citizens, or can they set elected
officials up for failure? This article examines security provisioning by local governments in Nigeria, understanding that some local governments are elected, while others are appointed by state governors. Our hypothesis was that elected local councils should be better rated than those that
are appointed. By looking at local government areas that differ mainly in terms of whether their council is elected or appointed, we found that local elections are not enough singly to build strong connections
between democratically elected local politicians and citizens. Democratic decentralisation in the context of limited financial resources, and limited autonomy vis-Ă -vis state governors and political bosses, can set elected governments up for failure to the extent that they are viewed as worse performers than their appointed counterparts
