    Deep Herschel view of obscured star formation in the Bullet cluster

    We use deep, five band (100–500 ÎŒm) data from the Herschel Lensing Survey (HLS) to fully constrain the obscured star formation rate, SFR_(FIR), of galaxies in the Bullet cluster (z = 0.296), and a smaller background system (z = 0.35) in the same field. Herschel detects 23 Bullet cluster members with a total SFRFIR = 144±14 M_☉ yr^(-1). On average, the background system contains brighter far-infrared (FIR) galaxies, with ~50% higher SFRFIR (21 galaxies; 207 ± 9 M_☉ yr^(-1)). SFRs extrapolated from 24 ÎŒm flux via recent templates (SFR_(24 ”m)) agree well with SFRFIR for ~60% of the cluster galaxies. In the remaining ~40%, SFR24 ”m underestimates SFR_(FIR) due to a significant excess in observed S_(100)/S_(24) (rest frame S_(75)/S_(18)) compared to templates of the same FIR luminosity

    A Spitzer Unbiased Ultradeep Spectroscopic Survey

    We carried out an unbiased, spectroscopic survey using the low-resolution module of the infrared spectrograph (IRS) on board Spitzer targeting two 2.6 square arcminute regions in the GOODS-North field. IRS was used in spectral mapping mode with 5 hours of effective integration time per pixel. One region was covered between 14 and 21 microns and the other between 20 and 35 microns. We extracted spectra for 45 sources. About 84% of the sources have reported detections by GOODS at 24 microns, with a median F_nu(24um) ~ 100 uJy. All but one source are detected in all four IRAC bands, 3.6 to 8 microns. We use a new cross-correlation technique to measure redshifts and estimate IRS spectral types; this was successful for ~60% of the spectra. Fourteen sources show significant PAH emission, four mostly SiO absorption, eight present mixed spectral signatures (low PAH and/or SiO) and two show a single line in emission. For the remaining 17, no spectral features were detected. Redshifts range from z ~ 0.2 to z ~ 2.2, with a median of 1. IR Luminosities are roughly estimated from 24 microns flux densities, and have median values of 2.2 x 10^{11} L_{\odot} and 7.5 x 10^{11} L_{\odot} at z ~ 1 and z ~ 2 respectively. This sample has fewer AGN than previous faint samples observed with IRS, which we attribute to the fainter luminosities reached here.Comment: Published in Ap

    Probing the Evolution of the Galaxy Interaction/Merger Rate Using Collisional Ring Galaxies

    We present the results from our program to determine the evolution of the galaxy interaction/merger rate with redshift using the unique star-forming characteristics of collisional ring galaxies. We have identified 25 distant collisional ring galaxy candidates (CRGCs) in a total of 162 deep Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field/Planetary Camera-2 images obtained from the HST Archives. Based on measured and estimated redshifts, these 25 CRGCs all lie in the redshift interval of 0.1 < z < 1. Using the local collisional ring galaxy volume density and the new ``standard'' cosmology, we find that in order to account for the number of identified CRGCs in our surveyed fields, the galaxy interaction/merger rate, parameterized as (1 + z)^m, must increase steeply with redshift.We determine a minimum value of m = 5.2 ±\pm 0.7, though m could be as high as 7 or 8. We can rule out a non-evolving (m = 0) and weakly evolving (m = 1-2) galaxy interaction/merger rate at greater than the 4 sigma level of confidence.Comment: Accepted in the Astrophysical Journal (11 pages, 4 figures).     Plasma and Warm Dust in the Collisional Ring Galaxy VIIZw466 from VLA and ISO Observations

    We present the first mid-infrared (Mid-IR) (λ5−15ÎŒ\lambda5-15\mum) and radio continuum (λλ\lambda\lambda20,~6 and 3.6 cm) observations of the star-forming collisional ring galaxy VII Zw 466 and its host group made with the Infrared Space Observatory and the NRAO Very Large Array. A search was also made for CO line emission in two of the galaxies with the Onsala 20m radio telescope and upper limits were placed on the mass of molecular gas in those galaxies. The ring galaxy is believed to owe its morphology to a slightly off-center collision between an `intruder' galaxy and a disk. An off-center collision is predicted to generate a radially expanding density wave in the disk which should show large azimuthal variations in overdensity, and have observational consequences. The radio continuum emission shows the largest asymmetry, exhibiting a crescent-shaped distribution consistent with either the trapping of cosmic-ray particles in the target disk, or an enhanced supernova rate in the compressed region. On the other hand, the ISO observations (especially those made at λ9.6ÎŒ\lambda9.6\mum) show a more scattered distribution, with emission centers associated with powerful star formation sites distributed more uniformly around the ring. Low-signal to noise observations at λ15.0ÎŒ\lambda15.0\mum show possible emission inside the ring, with little emission directly associated with the \ion{H}{2} regions. The observations emphasize the complex relationship between the generation of radio emission and the development of star formation even in relatively simple and well understood collisional scenarios.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, 23 pages + 6 PS figure

    Impacts of mercury contaminated mining waste on soil quality, crops, bivalves, and fish in the Naboc River area,

    Abstract Rice paddy fields in the Naboc area, near Monkayo on the island of Mindanao, Philippines, have been irrigated four times a year over the last decade using Naboc River water contaminated with mercury (Hg) by artisanal gold mining in the Diwalwal area. Silt containing up to at least 90 mg Hg/kg (d.w.) has been deposited in rice paddy fields during the 1990s and this has been repeatedly mixed into the rice root zone through ploughing. Hg in the rice paddy field soils averages 24 mg Hg/kg and generally exceeds the UK and Canadian soil quality thresholds for agricultural soils as well as the proposed Dutch Intervention value and the USEPA soil ingestion Soil Screening Level (SSL) for inorganic Hg. Much lower Hg concentrations (0.05-0.99 mg/kg) within the range expected for uncontaminated soils, characterise soils on which corn and bananas are cultivated, largely because these are not irrigated with Hg-contaminated water from the Naboc River. The estimated total weekly MeHg intake for a person living in the Naboc area related to the weekly consumption of 2.1 kg of rice grown on Hg-contaminated soils (15 Ag MeHg) in conjunction with 1 kg of fish (220 Ag MeHg) and 100 g of mussels (50 Ag MeHg) from the Naboc River, would total 285 Ag MeHg (equivalent to 4.75 Ag/kg bw for a 60 kg adult), which is nearly three times the JECFA PTWI of 1.6 Ag/kg bw. This will significantly contribute to the population mercury exposure and might explain why 38% of the local inhabitants were classified as Hg intoxicated during a mercury toxicity assessmen

    Spatially Resolved Spitzer-IRS Spectroscopy of the Central Region of M82

    We present high spatial resolution (~ 35 parsec) 5-38 um spectra of the central region of M82, taken with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph. From these spectra we determined the fluxes and equivalent widths of key diagnostic features, such as the [NeII]12.8um, [NeIII]15.5um, and H_2 S(1)17.03um lines, and the broad mid-IR polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features in six representative regions and analysed the spatial distribution of these lines and their ratios across the central region. We find a good correlation of the dust extinction with the CO 1-0 emission. The PAH emission follows closely the ionization structure along the galactic disk. The observed variations of the diagnostic PAH ratios across M82 can be explained by extinction effects, within systematic uncertainties. The 16-18um PAH complex is very prominent, and its equivalent width is enhanced outwards from the galactic plane. We interpret this as a consequence of the variation of the UV radiation field. The EWs of the 11.3um PAH feature and the H_2 S(1) line correlate closely, and we conclude that shocks in the outflow regions have no measurable influence on the H_2 emission. The [NeIII]/[NeII] ratio is on average low at ~0.18, and shows little variations across the plane, indicating that the dominant stellar population is evolved (5 - 6 Myr) and well distributed. There is a slight increase of the ratio with distance from the galactic plane of M82 which we attribute to a decrease in gas density. Our observations indicate that the star formation rate has decreased significantly in the last 5 Myr. The quantities of dust and molecular gas in the central area of the galaxy argue against starvation and for negative feedback processes, observable through the strong extra-planar outflows.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, ApJ, emulateap

    Demonstration of vincristine resistance in primary intestinal neoplasms in the rat by the 'post-metaphase index'.

    A method is described enabling the direct measurement of vincristine resistance in intact tissues in vivo by morphological study. Using the metaphase arresting properties of the drug, counts were made of escaping anaphase and telophase mitotic figures at a range of doses. The proportion of post-metaphase mitotic figures is called the post-metaphase index (PMI). In 95 primary intestinal tumours induced by dimethylhydrazine (DMH) in rats, an increase in resistance to vincristine was shown over normal mucosa (P less than 0.001). The data were analysed by computer modelling and a linear relationship is demonstrated between the logit of the post-metaphase index, and log dose of vincristine. To achieve a PMI of 1% the fitted lines show an enhanced vincristine dose requirement over normal mucosa of 6 times in colonic tumours, and 8 times in small intestinal tumours. Non-neoplastic mucosa from the DMH-treated animals requires an enhanced dose of vincristine of 1.5 times, compared with normal mucosa, to achieve a PMI of 1%. Given current interest in the mechanism of vincristine resistance in cell lines this new approach provides a technique for assessing the resistance of solid tumours, both in vivo and in vitro, and for subsequent experimental manipulation
