    Prevalence of dyslipidemia and hypercholesterolemia awareness: results from the Lookup 7+ online project

    Background: Cardiovascular disease still represents the leading cause of death worldwide. Management of risk factors remains crucial; despite this, hypercholesterolemia, which is one of the most important modifiable cardiovascular risk factor, is still high prevalent in general population. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of dyslipidemia and hypercholesterolemia awareness in a very large population. Methods: More than 65 000 users completed the online, self-administered survey. It was structured like a 'journey' where each stage corresponded to a cardiovascular risk factor: blood pressure, body mass index, cholesterol, diet, physical exercise, smoke and blood sugar. At the end, the user received a final evaluation of his health status. Results: The mean age was 52.5 years (SD 13.9, range 18-98), with 35 402 (53.7%) men. About 56% of all participants believed to have normal cholesterol values, when only 40% of them really showed values <200 mg/dl. Only about 30% of all participants self-predicted to have abnormal cholesterol values whereas we found high cholesterol levels in about 60% of people. Conclusions: Dyslipidemia is very prevalent and half of the people with high cholesterol is not aware of having high values

    Malnutrition in COVID-19 survivors: prevalence and risk factors

    Background: Nutritional status is a critical factor throughout COVID-19 disease course. Malnutrition is associated with poor outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Aim: To assess the prevalence of malnutrition and identify its associated factors in COVID-19 survivors. Methods: Study cohort included 1230 COVID-19 survivors aged 18-86 attending a post-COVID-19 outpatient service. Data on clinical parameters, anthropometry, acute COVID-19 symptoms, lifestyle habits were collected through a comprehensive medical assessment. Malnutrition was assessed according to Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria. Results: Prevalence of malnutrition was 22% at 4-5 months after acute disease. Participants who were not hospitalized during acute COVID-19 showed a higher frequency of malnutrition compared to those who needed hospitalization (26% versus 19%, p < 0.01). Malnutrition was found in 25% COVID-19 survivors over 65 years of age compared to 21% younger participants (p < 0.01). After multivariable adjustment, the likelihood of being malnourished increased progressively and independently with advancing age (Odds ratio [OR] 1.02; 95% CI 1.01-1.03) and in male participants (OR 5.56; 95% CI 3.53-8.74). Malnutrition was associated with loss of appetite (OR 2.50; 95% CI 1.73-3.62), and dysgeusia (OR 4.05; 95% CI 2.30-7.21) during acute COVID-19. Discussion: In the present investigation we showed that malnutrition was highly prevalent in a large cohort of COVID-19 survivors at 4-5 months from acute illness. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the need to implement comprehensive nutritional assessment and therapy as an integral part of care for COVID-19 patients

    Multidisciplinary Care for Patients with Cardiac Amyloidosis: a Lesson from the 2023 American College of Cardiology Expert Consensus

    Amyloidosis is a rare and varied group of diseases defined by the misfolding, aggregation, and deposition of highly structured fibrils made of low molecular weight protein subunits known as amyloid deposits throughout different tissues. Depending on their form and location, amyloid deposits can produce a variety of clinical manifestations resulting in considerable morbidity, death, and a deterioration in quality of life. "Cardiac amyloidosis" refers to the clinical condition associated with cardiac amyloid infiltration of the heart. The American College of Cardiology has issued an expert consensus addressing cardiological management of cardiac amyloidosis, the need for an interdisciplinary approach to extra-cardiac manifestations and highlighting the importance of removing barriers to equitable care for patients with amyloidosis.     Impact of habitual physical activity and type of exercise on physical performance across ages in community-living people.

    The maintenance of muscle function into late life protects against various negative health outcomes. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of habitual physical activity and exercise types on physical performance across ages in community-living adults. The Longevity check-up 7+ (Lookup 7+) project is an ongoing cross-sectional survey conducted in unconventional settings (e.g., exhibitions, malls, and health promotion campaigns across Italy) that began on June 1st 2015. The project was designed to raise awareness in the general population on major lifestyle behaviors and risk factors for chronic diseases. Candidate participants are eligible for enrolment if they are at least 18 years of age and provide written informed consent. Physical performance is evaluated through the 5-repetition chair stand test. Analyses were conducted in 6,242 community-living adults enrolled between June 1st 2015 and June 30th 2017, after excluding 81 participants for missing values of the variables of interest. The mean age of the 6,242 participants was 54.4 years (standard deviation 15.2, range 18-98 years), and 3552 (57%) were women. The time to complete the chair stand test was similar from 18 to 40-44 years, and declined progressively across subsequent age groups. Overall, the performance on the chair stand test was better in physically active participants, who completed the test with a mean of 0.5 s less than sedentary enrollees (p < .001). After adjusting for potential confounders, a different distribution of physical performance across exercise intensities was observed, with better performance being recorded in participants engaged in more vigorous activities. Our findings suggest that regular physical activity modifies the age-related pattern of decline in physical performance, with greater benefits observed for more intensive activities. Efforts are needed from health authorities and healthcare providers to promote the large-scale adoption of an active lifestyle throughout the life course

    Mechanical behavior of hybrid fiber-reinforced composites manufactured by pulse infusion

    Epoxy/carbon fiber composites have been manufactured by Pulse Infusion. Pulse Infusion allows to control the pressure of the vacuum bag on the dry fiber reinforcement by using a proper designed pressure distributor that induces a pulsed transverse action and promotes the through thickness resin flow. The adopted one-component commercial epoxy resin has been preliminary modified by adding 0.05% (w/w) of multiwalled carbon nanotubes, in order to take advantage of carbon nanotubes at low concentration. Both neat and hybrid realized composite panels have been mechanically characterized by performing experimental tests to evaluate tensile, interlaminar, and fracture properties in order to investigate the effect of Pulse Infusion and carbon nanotubes on the mechanical and fracture behavior of composites. Results demonstrated an improvement of 36.2% for the interlaminar shear strength, of 35% for the fracture energy at the crack initiation and of 14% for the fracture toughness in mode II. © 2015 Society of Plastics Engineers

    Anorexia of Aging: Risk Factors, Consequences, and Potential Treatments

    Older people frequently fail to ingest adequate amount of food to meet their essential energy and nutrient requirements. Anorexia of aging, defined by decrease in appetite and/or food intake in old age, is a major contributing factor to under-nutrition and adverse health outcomes in the geriatric population. This disorder is indeed highly prevalent and is recognized as an independent predictor of morbidity and mortality in different clinical settings. Even though anorexia is not an unavoidable consequence of aging, advancing age often promotes its development through various mechanisms. Age-related changes in life-style, disease conditions, as well as social and environmental factors have the potential to directly affect dietary behaviors and nutritional status. In spite of their importance, problems related to food intake and, more generally, nutritional status are seldom attended to in clinical practice. While this may be the result of an “ageist” approach, it should be acknowledged that simple interventions, such as oral nutritional supplementation or modified diets, could meaningfully improve the health status and quality of life of older persons
