    Structural Considerations for Larger Upper Stage Development

    The selection of design configurations and materials for large vehicles such as those proposed for manned missions to Mars in the early 1980\u27s will require the resolving of major technological questions during the next few years. The structure required to contain the large volume of liquid propellants, particularly hydrogen, must be of efficient design so that payload capability can be maximized. In a typical study recently conducted, design criteria were established for a multimodule upper stage. Each stage module consists of a basic shell structure, an insulated, internally mounted LH2 propellant tank, and the thrust engine with its associated support system and hardware. Meteoroid protection is incorporated in the shell structure. The largest potential for structural weight-saving appears to be in the propellant tank design. Aluminum alloys are currently favored as tank material because of successful experience and the high level of technological development. Titanium alloys, however, offer sizeable potential weight savings because of their superior biaxial strength properties at cryogenic temperatures. The biaxial strengths of titanium alloys range from 30% to 70% greater than their uniaxial strength, compared to less than 15% for the aluminum alloys. However, there are certain requisite programs that must be conducted before titanium can be introduced as a qualified structural material for large cryogenic tankage. This study investigated the following areas: texture strengthening of titanium alloys, nondestructive inspection techniques, critical crack size, proof load levels, compatibility with LH;? under long-term storage conditions, stress corrosion, creep, and low-cycle fatigue. Only with positive results in these areas could the materials be used. Efficient means of attachment of structural components to thin-gage tanks were studied, as were manufacturing considerations for the vehicles. These included material size, development of welding methods and equipment, and techniques for handling the large, thin-gage upper stage structural components before, during, and after fabrication

    Report on an all-sky LIGO search for periodic gravitational waves in the S4 data

    We report on an all-sky search with the LIGO detectors for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency range 50-1000 Hz and having a negative frequency time derivative with magnitude between zero and 10−810^{-8} Hz/s. Data from the fourth LIGO science run have been used in this search. Three different semi-coherent methods of summing strain power were applied. Observing no evidence for periodic gravitational radiation, we report upper limits on strain amplitude and interpret these limits to constrain radiation from rotating neutron stars.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, presented at Amaldi7, Sydney (July 2007

    Many professional organizations have initiatives to increase the awareness and use of informatics in the practice of pharmacy. Within education we must respond to these initiatives and make technology integral to all aspects of the curriculum, inculcating in students the importance of technology in practice. This document proposes 5 central domains for organizing planning related to informatics and technology within pharmacy education. The document is intended to encourage discussion of informatics within pharmacy education and the implications of informatics in future pharmacy practice, and to guide colleges of pharmacy in identifying and analyzing informatics topics to be taught and methods of instruction to be used within the doctor of pharmacy curriculum

    Quantum Vortex in a Vectorial Bose-Einstein Condensate

    Quantum vortices in the multi-component Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) are investigated theoretically. It is found that three kinds of the vortex configurations are possible and their physical properties are discussed in details, including the density distribution and the spin texture. By using the Bogoliubov theory extended to the three component BEC, the collective modes for these vortices are evaluated. The local vortex stability for these vortices are examined in light of the existence of the negative eigenvalue, yielding a narrow magnetization window for the local intrinsic stable region where the multi-components work together to stabilize a vortex in a self-organized way.Comment: 8 pages, 14 eps figure

    Quantized circular motion of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate: coherent rotation and vortices

    We study the creation of vortex states in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate by a rotating force. For a harmonic trapping potential the rotating force induces only a circular motion of the whole condensate around the trap center which does not depend on the interatomic interaction. For the creation of a pure vortex state it is necessary to confine the atoms in an anharmonic trapping potential. The efficiency of the creation can be greatly enhanced by a sinusodial variation of the force's angular velocity. We present analytical and numerical calculations for the case of a quartic trapping potential. The physical mechanism behind the requirement of an anharmonic trapping potential for the creation of pure vortex states is explained.     Negotiations of minority ethnic rugby league players in the Cathar country of France

    This article is based on new empirical, qualitative research with minority ethnic rugby league players in the southwest of France. Drawing on similar research on rugby league in the north and the south of England, the article examines how rugby league, traditionally viewed as a white, working-class male game (Collins, 2006; Denham, 2004; Spracklen, 1995, 2001) has had to re-imagine its symbolic boundaries as they are constituted globally and locally to accommodate the needs of players from minority ethnic backgrounds. In particular, the article examines the sense in which experiences of minority ethnic rugby league players in France compare with those of their counterparts in England (Spracklen, 2001, 2007), how rugby league is used in France to construct identity, and in what sense the norms associated with the imaginary community of rugby league are replicated or challenged by the involvement of minority ethnic rugby league players in France. Questions about what it means to be (provincial, national) French (Kumar, 2006) are posed, questions that relate to the role of sport in the construction of Frenchness, and in particular the role of rugby league (and union). © Copyright ISSA and SAGE Publications

    How to manage the left subclavian artery during endovascular stenting of the thoracic aorta

    We performed a systematic review of the literature to establish whether revascularisation of the left subclavian territory is necessary when this artery is covered by a stent. We retrieved data from 99 studies incorporating 4906 patients. Incidences of left-arm ischaemia (0.0% vs 9.2%, p=0.002) and stroke (4.7% vs 7.2%, pâ‰Ș0.001) were significantly less following revascularisation, although mortality (10.5% vs 3.4%, p=0.032) and endoleak incidence (25.8% vs 12.6%, p=0.008) were increased. No significant differences in spinal-cord ischaemia were seen. Revascularisation may reduce downstream ischaemic complications but can cause significant risk.
