    Process development of two high strength tantalum base alloys (ASTAR-1211C and ASTAR-1511C)

    Two tantalum base alloys, Ta-12W-1.0Re-0.7Hf-0.025C(ASTAR-1211C) and Ta-15W-1.0Re-0.7Hf-0.025C(ASTAR-1511C), were cast as 12.5 cm (5 inch) diameter ingots and processed to swaged rod, sheet, forged plate, and tubing. Swaged rod was evaluated with respect to low temperature ductility, elevated temperature tensile properties, and elevated temperature creep behavior. A standard swaging process and final annealing schedule were determined. Elevated temperature tensile properties, low temperature impact properties, low temperature DBTT behavior, and extended elevated temperature creep properties were determined. A process for producing ASTAR-1211C and ASTAR-1511C sheet were developed. The DBTT properties of GTA and EB weld sheet given post-weld anneal and thermal aging treatments were determined using bend and tensile specimens. High and low temperature mechanical properties of forging ASTAR-1211C and ASTAR-1511C plate were determined as well as elevated temperature creep properties. Attempts to produce ASTAR-1211C tubing were partially successful while attempts to make ASTAR-1511C tubing were completely unsuccessful

    The 25 October 2010 Mentawai tsunami earthquake (M_w 7.8) and the tsunami hazard presented by shallow megathrust ruptures

    The 25 October 2010 Mentawai, Indonesia earthquake (M_w 7.8) ruptured the shallow portion of the subduction zone seaward of the Mentawai islands, off-shore of Sumatra, generating 3 to 9 m tsunami run-up along southwestern coasts of the Pagai Islands that took at least 431 lives. Analyses of teleseismic P, SH and Rayleigh waves for finite-fault source rupture characteristics indicate ∼90 s rupture duration with a low rupture velocity of ∼1.5 km/s on the 10° dipping megathrust, with total slip of 2–4 m over an ∼100 km long source region. The seismic moment-scaled energy release is 1.4 × 10^(−6), lower than 2.4 × 10^(−6) found for the 17 July 2006 Java tsunami earthquake (M_w 7.8). The Mentawai event ruptured up-dip of the slip region of the 12 September 2007 Kepulauan earthquake (M_w 7.9), and together with the 4 January 1907 (M 7.6) tsunami earthquake located seaward of Simeulue Island to the northwest along the arc, demonstrates the significant tsunami generation potential for shallow megathrust ruptures in regions up-dip of great underthrusting events in Indonesia and elsewhere

    Development of advanced high strength tantalum base alloys. Part 2: Scale-up investigation

    Three experimental tantalum alloy compositions containing 14-16% W, 1% Re, 0.7% Hf, 0.025% C or 0.015% C and 0.015% N were prepared as two inch diameter ingots by consumable electrode vacuum arc melting. The as-cast ingots were processed by extrusion and swaging to one inch and 0.4 inch diameter rod and evaluated. Excellent high temperature forging behavior was exhibited by all three compositions. Creep strength at 2000 F to 2400 F was enhanced by higher tungsten additions as well as substitution of nitrogen for carbon. Weldability of all three compositions was determined to be adequate. Room temperature ductility was retained in the advanced tantalum alloy compositions as well as a notched/unnotched strength ratio of 1.4 for a notched bar having a K sub t = 2.9

    Depth-varying rupture properties of subduction zone megathrust faults

    Subduction zone plate boundary megathrust faults accommodate relative plate motions with spatially varying sliding behavior. The 2004 Sumatra-Andaman (M_w 9.2), 2010 Chile (Mw 8.8), and 2011 Tohoku (M_w 9.0) great earthquakes had similar depth variations in seismic wave radiation across their wide rupture zones – coherent teleseismic short-period radiation preferentially emanated from the deeper portion of the megathrusts whereas the largest fault displacements occurred at shallower depths but produced relatively little coherent short-period radiation. We represent these and other depth-varying seismic characteristics with four distinct failure domains extending along the megathrust from the trench to the downdip edge of the seismogenic zone. We designate the portion of the megathrust less than 15 km below the ocean surface as domain A, the region of tsunami earthquakes. From 15 to ∼35 km deep, large earthquake displacements occur over large-scale regions with only modest coherent short-period radiation, in what we designate as domain B. Rupture of smaller isolated megathrust patches dominate in domain C, which extends from ∼35 to 55 km deep. These isolated patches produce bursts of coherent short-period energy both in great ruptures and in smaller, sometimes repeating, moderate-size events. For the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, the sites of coherent teleseismic short-period radiation are close to areas where local strong ground motions originated. Domain D, found at depths of 30–45 km in subduction zones where relatively young oceanic lithosphere is being underthrust with shallow plate dip, is represented by the occurrence of low-frequency earthquakes, seismic tremor, and slow slip events in a transition zone to stable sliding or ductile flow below the seismogenic zone

    Initial Mass Function Effects on the Colour Evolution of Disk Galaxies

    Aims. In this work, we want to find out if the IMF can be determined from colour images, integrated colours, or mass-to-light ratios, especially at high redshift, where galaxies cannot be resolved into individual stars, which would enable us to investigate dependencies of the IMF on cosmological epoch. Methods. We use chemo-dynamical models to investigate the influence of the Initial Mass Function (IMF) on the evolution of a Milky Way-type disk galaxy, in particular of its colours. Results. We find that the effect of the IMF on the internal gas absorption is larger than its effect on the light from the stellar content. However, the two effects work in the opposite sense: An IMF with more high mass stars leads to brighter and bluer star-light, but also to more interstellar dust and thus to more absorption, causing a kind of “IMF degeneracy”. The most likely wavelength region in which to detect IMF effects is the infrared (i.e., JHK). We also provide photometric absorption and inclination corrections in the SDSS ugriz and the HST WFPC2 and NICMOS systems

    Application of the density matrix renormalization group method to finite temperatures and two-dimensional systems

    The density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method and its applications to finite temperatures and two-dimensional systems are reviewed. The basic idea of the original DMRG method, which allows precise study of the ground state properties and low-energy excitations, is presented for models which include long-range interactions. The DMRG scheme is then applied to the diagonalization of the quantum transfer matrix for one-dimensional systems, and a reliable algorithm at finite temperatures is formulated. Dynamic correlation functions at finite temperatures are calculated from the eigenvectors of the quantum transfer matrix with analytical continuation to the real frequency axis. An application of the DMRG method to two-dimensional quantum systems in a magnetic field is demonstrated and reliable results for quantum Hall systems are presented.Comment: 33 pages, 18 figures; corrected Eq.(117

    Household food insecurity positively associated with increased hospital charges for infants

    Objective: To test whether household food insecurity (HFI) was associated with total annual hospitalization charges, annual days hospitalized, and charges per day, among low-income infants (months) with any non-neonatal hospital stays. Methods: Administrative inpatient hospital charge data were matched to survey data from infants\u27 caregivers interviewed 1998-2005 in emergency departments in Boston and Little Rock. All study infants had been hospitalized at least once since birth; infants whose diagnoses were not plausibly related to nutrition were excluded from both groups. Log-transformed hospitalization charges were analyzed, controlling for site fixed effects. Results: 24% of infants from food-insecure households and 16% from food-secure households were hospitalized \u3e2 times (P=0.02). Mean annual inpatient hospital charges (6,707vs6,707 vs 5,735; P Conclusion: HFI was positively associated with annual inpatient charges among hospitalized low income infants. Average annual inpatient charges were almost $2,000 higher (inflation adjusted) for infants living in food-insecure households. Reducing or eliminating food insecurity could reduce health services utilization and expenditures for infants in low-income families, most of whom are covered by public health insurance
