Is distortion of the bioprosthesis ring a risk factor for early calcification ?
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>As the population ages, bioprosthesis are increasingly being used in cardiac valve replacement. Pericardial bioprosthesis combine an excellent hemodynamic performance with low thrombogenicity, but valve failure associated with calcification remains a concern with these valves. We describe distortion of the bioprosthesis ring as a risk factor for early calcification.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 510 patients over the age of 70 years underwent isolated aortic valve replacement with the Mitroflow (A12) pericardial bioprosthesis. Thirty two patients (6,2%) have undergone a second aortic valve replacement due to structural valve dysfunction resulting from valve calcification. In all patients a chest radiography and coronary angiography was performed before reoperation. A 64 Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) with retrospective ECG gating study was performed in four patients to evaluate the aortic bioprosthesis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Chest radiography showed in all patients an irregular bioprosthesis ring. At preoperative coronary angiography a distorted bioprosthesis ring was detected in all patients. Macroscopic findings of the explanted bioprostheses included extensive calcification in all specimens.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There was a possible relationship between early bioprosthetic calcification and radiologic distortion of the bioprosthesis ring.</p
Quantum gravity corrections to the Schwarzschild mass
Vacuum spherically symmetric Einstein gravity in dimensions can be
cast in a two-dimensional conformal nonlinear sigma model form by first
integrating on the -dimensional (hyper)sphere and then performing a
canonical transformation. The conformal sigma model is described by two fields
which are related to the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner mass and to the radius of the
-dimensional (hyper)sphere, respectively. By quantizing perturbatively

Dinâmica de N e K em frutos de cafeeiro abrábico em três níveis de adubação.
O objetivo deste trabalho foi acompanhar a dinâmica de N e K em frutos de cafeeiro da antese à maturação em três níveis de adubação.. Utilizaram-se três variedades de cafeeiro arábico distribuídas em três ensaios independentes (níveis de adubação baixo, adequado e alto), instalados em blocos ao acaso com duas repetições em um esquema de parcelas subdivididas no tempo. As variedades apresentaram as maiores concentrações de N e K nos frutos no estádio de chumbinho, havendo redução na concentração dos elementos no estádio de expansão rápida. Nos estádios de crescimento suspenso e granação-maturação se observou um novo aumento na concentração de N e K nos frutos

Internal mammary artery dilatation in a patient with aortic coarctation, aortic stenosis, and coronary disease. Case report
The ideal surgical approach is unclear in adult patients with coarctation of the aorta that is associated with other cardiovascular pathologies that require intervention. Standard median sternotomy allows simultaneous, coronary revascularization surgery, valve replacement and repair of aortic coarctation. However the collateral circulation and the anatomy of the mammary arteries must be determined, to avoid possible complications. We report a case of a 69 year-old man with aortic coarctation, aortic stenosis, coronary artery disease and internal mammary artery dilatation who underwent concomitant surgical procedures through a median sternotomy
Association of sociocultural stressors with bipolar disorder onset in Puerto Rican youth growing up as members of a minoritized ethnic group: results from the Boricua Youth Longitudinal Study
BACKGROUND: The development of bipolar disorder is currently explained by a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Less is known regarding the influence of sociocultural factors. This study aims to evaluate the incidence and impact of sociocultural factors on bipolar disorder onset in two comparable samples of youth growing up in different social settings. METHODS: We leveraged data from two urban population-based cohorts representative of Puerto Rican children growing up in either San Juan (Puerto Rico) or the South Bronx (NYC) and followed up for 17 years. Bipolar disorder diagnoses were based on retrospective self-reports on the World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview. We used a causal inference approach to estimate associations of sociocultural factors with bipolar disorder onset after adjusting for potential confounders. FINDINGS: We found that South Bronx children, who grew up as a minoritized group, had twice the risk of bipolar disorder onset as young adults, with an incidence rate of 2.22 new cases per 1000 person-years compared to 1.08 new cases in San Juan (incidence rate difference, 1.13; 95% CI, 0.09-1.20). After adjusting for potential confounders, South Bronx children had the same lifetime hazard of bipolar disorder onset compared to San Juan children. However, our analysis demonstrated that caregivers' exposure to societal cultural stress partially explained the increased risk of bipolar disorder onset in the South Bronx, in addition to the potential contribution of genetics. INTERPRETATION: Our results provide evidence that societal cultural stress can increase the risk of lifetime bipolar disorder onset in youth growing up as a minoritized group. Addressing stress in minoritized groups might reduce the risk of bipolar disorder onset. coupling determined beyond the chiral limit
Within the conventional QCD sum rules, we calculate the coupling
constant, , beyond the chiral limit using two-point correlation
function with a pion. We consider the Dirac structure, , at
order, which has clear dependence on the PS and PV coupling schemes
for the pion-nucleon interactions. For a consistent treatment of the sum rule,
we include the linear terms in quark mass as they constitute the same chiral
order as . Using the PS coupling scheme for the pion-nucleon
interaction, we obtain , which is very close to the
empirical coupling. This demonstrates that going beyond the chiral
limit is crucial in determining the coupling and the pseudoscalar coupling

Near-to mid-IR spectral purity transfer with a tunable frequency comb: methanol frequency metrology over a record frequency span
We report the development and operation of a frequency-comb-assisted
high-resolution mid-infrared molecular spectrometer combining high spectral
purity, SI-traceability, wide tunability and high sensitivity. An optical
frequency comb is used to transfer the spectral purity of a SI-traceable 1.54
m metrology-grade frequency reference to a 10.3 m quantum cascade
laser (QCL). The near-infrared reference is operated at the French
time/frequency metrology institute, calibrated there to primary frequency
standards, and transferred to Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers via the
REFIMEVE fiber network. The QCL exhibits a sub-10 --15 frequency stability from
0.1 to 10 s and its frequency is traceable to the SI with a total uncertainty
better than 4 x 10 --14 after 1-s averaging time. We have developed the
instrumentation allowing comb modes to be continuously tuned over 9 GHz
resulting in a QCL of record spectral purity uninterruptedly tunable at the
precision of the reference over an unprecedented span of 1.4 GHz. We have used
our apparatus to conduct sub-Doppler spectroscopy of methanol in a multi-pass
cell, demonstrating state-of-art frequency uncertainties down to the few
kilohertz level. We have observed weak intensity resonances unreported so far,
resolved subtle doublets never seen before and brought to light discrepancies
with the HITRAN database. This demonstrates the potential of our apparatus for
probing subtle internal molecular processes, building accurate spectroscopic
models of polyatomic molecules of atmospheric or astrophysical interest, and
carrying out precise spectroscopic tests of fundamental physics
The Large Aperture GRB Observatory
The Large Aperture GRB Observatory (LAGO) is aiming at the detection of the
high energy (around 100 GeV) component of Gamma Ray Bursts, using the single
particle technique in arrays of Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD) in high
mountain sites (Chacaltaya, Bolivia, 5300 m a.s.l., Pico Espejo, Venezuela,
4750 m a.s.l., Sierra Negra, Mexico, 4650 m a.s.l). WCD at high altitude offer
a unique possibility of detecting low gamma fluxes in the 10 GeV - 1 TeV range.
The status of the Observatory and data collected from 2007 to date will be
