Fine-scale mapping of High Nature Value farmlands: novel approaches to improve the management of rural biodiversity and ecosystem services

High Nature Value farmlands (HNVf) are defined as rural lands characterized by high levels of biodiversity and extensive farming practices. These farmlands are also known to provide important ecosystems services, such as food production, pollination, water purification and landscape recreation. Recently, this concept has been introduced in Rural Development Programmes related to biodiversity preservation in traditional agricultural landscapes. However, there are no specific rules concerning the practical use of the concept, particularly on the identification of potential HNVf areas at a local scale. However, this application becomes important for farmland biodiversity protection in the context of multi-scale agricultural development. We present a novel approach for HNVf mapping, which provides an improved local discrimination of farmlands according to their contribution for the conservation of rural biodiversity and ecosystem services. Our approach is based on a multi-criteria valuation of habitat types based on the national land cover map and agrarian censuses. It is onsidered applicable in other EU countries since comparable datasets are usually available. This methodology is also expected to provide the backbone of a standard, cost-effective methodology for HNVf monitoring, with an emphasis on the impacts of land use change on species, habitats and landscape function

Dystopia in the contemporary fiction: dystopian elements in The Hunger Games

In recent times there has been an increase in the production of dystopian literature, which at the current time targets mostly young adults and also teenagers. This dissertation briefly examines the evolution of the utopian and dystopian literary genre talking about some of its most known works up until the present. Then it explains some common elements of this type of fiction throughout contemporary novels which have achieved some success. Next, it studies which dystopian elements are present in the Hunger Games trilogy as it has been quite successful, both in literature and in cinema, as well as being a representative example of this field. Finally, this dissertation aims to find in what ways this trilogy of books written by Suzanne Collins can be considered to belong to the dystopian genre.En los últimos tiempos ha habido un aumento en la producción de literatura distópica, que en estos momentos está orientada principalmente a jóvenes adultos e incluso adolescentes. Este trabajo de fin de grado examina brevemente la evolución del género literario utópico y distópico hablando sobre algunas de sus obras más conocidas hasta el momento actual. Luego explica algunos de los elementos comunes de este tipo de ficción, presentes en la trilogía de los Juegos del Hambre, ya que ha tenido bastante éxito, tanto en literatura como en cine, aparte de ser un ejemplo representativo de este campo. Discretization-dependent model for weakly connected excitable media

Pattern formation has been widely observed in extended chemical and biological processes. Although the biochemical systems are highly heterogeneous, homogenized continuum approaches formed by partial differential equations have been employed frequently. Such approaches are usually justified by the difference of scales between the heterogeneities and the characteristic spatial size of the patterns. Under different conditions, for example, under weak coupling, discrete models are more adequate. However, discrete models may be less manageable, for instance, in terms of numerical implementation and mesh generation, than the associated continuum models. Here we study a model to approach discreteness which permits the computer implementation on general unstructured meshes. The model is cast as a partial differential equation but with a parameter that depends not only on heterogeneities sizes, as in the case of quasicontinuum models, but also on the discretization mesh. Therefore, we refer to it as a discretization-dependent model. Effective temperatures and radii of planet-hosting stars from IR photometry

In this paper we present and analyse determinations of effective temperatures of planet-hosting stars using infrared (IR) photometry. One of our goals is the comparison with spectroscopic temperatures to evaluate the presence of systematic effects that could alter the determination of metal abundances. To estimate the stellar temperatures we have followed a new approach based on fitting the observed 2MASS IR photometry with accurately calibrated synthetic photometry. Special care has been put in evaluating all sources of possible errors and incorporating them in the analysis. A comparison of our temperature determinations with spectroscopic temperatures published by different groups reveals the presence of no systematic trends and a scatter compatible with the quoted uncertainties of 0.5-1.3%. This mutual agreement strengthens the results of both the spectroscopic and IR photometry analyses. Comparisons with other photometric temperature calibrations, generally with poorer performances, are also presented. In addition, the method employed of fitting IR photometry naturally yields determinations of the stellar semi-angular diameters, which, when combined with the distances, results in estimations of the stellar radii with remarkable accuracies of ~2-4%. Effectiveness of sponsoring the video assistant referee system: a comparative exploratory study

Purpose – This study explores the effect of video assistant referee (VAR) sponsorship on spectator response and compares it with advertising and conventional sponsorship. Design/methodology/approach – An experiment with 809 subjects is conducted by analyzing 20 oneminute video clip stimuli from a Premier League soccer game divided into four formats: two formats of VAR sponsorship, advertising, and conventional sponsorship. Findings – The results show that the indicators of recall, credibility, and perceived congruence improve when the VAR sponsorship format is used. Originality/value – This is the firstmanuscript to examine the effectiveness of a newtype of sponsorship:VAR sponsorship. This manuscript provides metrics that will guide practitioners on whether to use this type of sponsorship
