    THE STUDENTS' LEARNING ACHIEVEMENT AFTER AND WITHOUT STUDYING ENGLISH IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

    The Critical Period Hypothesis by Lenneberg (1976)  states that ages 2 to 12 are ideal ages for achieving foreign language skills such as a native speaker. Based on this hypothesis, the perfect time for children to learn English as a foreign language is in elementary school. Meanwhile, Indonesian government policy through the 2013 curriculum does not require children in primary schools to learn English. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the English learning achievement of students between those who studied and those who did not study English in elementary school. This research is important to be conducted since it can be a reference for the Indonesian government in developing English language teaching and learning policy in elementary schools.  The sample of this research consisted of two groups selected through a purposive sampling technique. They were the groupS of students who studied and who did not study English in elementary school. Data were grouped, presented, and then compared. The results showed that students who studied English in elementary school had better English learning achievement than students who did not study English in elementary school. It is recommended for further related researches to consider many factors those can be influencing the students' English learning achievements such as the English teaching and learning method used by the educators in high school and university, attitudinal factor, and the learning environment.

    This study aims to compare the English learning achievement of students who learned and who did not learn English inelementary schools. Critical Age Hypothesis states that 2 to 12 years old is a very ideal time to achieve the best Englishproficiency. The results of the study can be used as a reference for the English language teaching policies inelementary school. This research is a comparative descriptive study with a quantitative approach. Data from two samplegroups were selected through purposive sampling technique and then compared. The results showed that the highestscore (A) was achieved more by students who learned English in elementary school. Medium score (B/B +) was achievedmore by students who did not learn English in elementary school but with a small difference. The low score (C/C+) wasachieved more by students who did not learn English in elementary school

Classroom Action Research is the model conducted in this research which consists of threestages namely pretest, treatment, and posttest. Based on the pretest result, it can be concluded that the skill of readingEnglish text resulted in very poor classification for 8 students. Based on final result of research, the posttest of students'reading skill developed as the result of treatment for 5 students in very good classification

    The target of the community service program is low-income children of Al-Muslimun orphanage. Due to their economical problems, they have limited time to learn English and to communicate in school. Therefore, a support system is required to improve the students’ communication skills in English for their better future. The aims of the programs are to train English conversation and soft skills advanced level. The methods used in these activities are discussion, simulation, and pair or group-work. Training activities were held four times and each activity covered one hour of theory and one hour of practice. After the training, monitoring was held to evaluate the progress of the children in communicating. The result of this program is the significant improvement of children in soft skills and English conversation at an advanced level. The output of the target is the children’s ability to communicate effectively in advanced level in English Conversation and soft skills proved by training certificate. --- Mitra Program Kemitraan Masyarakat (PKM) adalah anak asuh Panti Asuhan Al-Muslimun yang merupakan kelompok masyarakat yang kurang mampu dari segi ekonomi. Oleh karena itu, mereka memiliki keterbatasan waktu dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris dan berkomunikasi di sekolah. Dengan demikian, sebuah dukungan dari sistem pendidikan mutlak ada untuk mengembangkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris untuk masa depan anak asuh. Tujuan Kegiatan ini memberikan pelatihan percakapan bahasa Inggris dan soft skill tingkat lanjutan kepada anak asuh. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini adalah diskusi, simulasi, dan kerja berpasangan atau kelompok. Kegiatan pelatihan diadakan sebanyak empat kali dan setiap kegiatan mencakup satu jam teori dan satu jam praktek. Setelah kegiatan pelatihan berakhir, monitoring dilaksanakan untuk mengevaluasi kemajuan dan perkembangan anak asuh dalam berkomunikasi. Hasil dari kegiatan PKM adalah meningkatnya kemampuan anak asuh untuk berkomunikasi dengan efektif dalam percakapan bahasa Inggris dan soft skill tingkat lanjut sesuai dengan materi yang telah diberikan oleh tim PKM. Luaran dari penelitian ini adalah modul pelatihan dan sertifikat yang telah diberikan kepada anak asuh sebagai bukti telah mengikuti pelatihan

    This study is a qualitative descriptive study. This study investigated factors causing the low learning results ofAutomotive Engineering students, State Polytechnic of Ujung Pandang, in English Class. This study can be thereference for English lecturers in determining the best strategy in teaching English to Automotif Engineering students.The respondents were the students who got bad score in English class in the odd semester of 2016/2017 academic year.To find out the internal and external factors causing the low learning results of the students, they were given aquestionnaire. The results show that the intelligence factor, the difficulty of getting friends to practice English, theexplanation of the English lecturer, and the laziness to study can be some factors causing the low learning result of someAutomotif Engineering students in English class. Meanwhile, the internal and the external factors like physical health,attention, interest, motivation to learn English, teaching methods, lessons, the relationship with the lecturer, learningtools, classroom condition, the respondents’ learning method both in class and outside class are not the cause of the lowlearning results of the respondents in English class
