Two hundred and fifty adolescents were drawn from three secondary school located in Damaturu. They were administered the Rotter's I-E Scale to assess the locus of control (IDV) and Allport (1969) religious orientation (IDV) scale, to see the influence on expression of academic anxiety (DV) which was assessed using Zeidnes & Schleyer's (1999) Academic Anxiety Scale. A 2 *2 Anova revealed a significant main effect of locus of control on academic anxiety F= 3.370 (1,220) P= 0.05. The main effect of religious orientation and the interaction of effect of religious orientation and locus of control were found to be statistically significant. Recommendations for policy formulation especially towards educating the School pupils to change their locus of control orientation in order to combat academic anxiety are discussed. The limitations of the finding particularly the sample sizes of participants for future researchers are offered. Keywords: Locus of control, Religious Orientation and Academic Anxiet

International Financial Reporting Standards Adoption and Liquidity Performance of Food and Beverages Listed Companies: Empirical Evidence from Nigeria

    Get PDF
Despite the relevance and adaptations of International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) in Nigeria, the literature indicates very few studies have attempted to investigate the effect of IFRS adoption to the firm’s performance, specifically, the relationship between IFRS adoption and liquidity performance of food and beverages listed companies in Nigeria. The literature suggests that there is not only limited information on the impact of IFRS adoption but also little research in this important area of study. Based on this information and research gab, the objective for the study is to investigate the effect of IFRS adoption on liquidity performance of food and beverages listed companies in Nigeria. By using Secondary data was collected from the annual reports of the sample companies. Multiple ordinary least square (OLS) regression was used to analyse the data collected from the audited financial statements of the sampled companies. I-T test and J-T test were also applied to test for any significant increase in firm performance after the adoption of IFRS. The analysed result showed that there is significant relationship between IFRS adoption and liquidity performance of food and beverages companies listed in the NSE. The implication of this study is that, the practice of the adoption of IFRS should be given more emphasis by organisations in Nigeria. The finding of the study indicates that, organisations that adopt IFRS would be able to improve their liquidity performance

The leaves of the plant Daniellia oliveri are usually prescribed traditionally in northern Nigeria for varieties of gastrointestinal complaints. The antispasmodic activity of the n-butanol soluble part of the aqueous portion of the ethanolic extract was evaluated in vitro on isolated guinea pig ileum against three spasmogen; Acetylcholine, Histamine and Barium chloride, and on isolated rabbit jejunum against acetylcholine and Barium chloride. The median inhibitory concentrations of the leaf on agonist were determined. Acute toxicity studies shows that the extract is relatively safe. A mixture of two new dihydrostilbenes, 3-methoxy-4,5-methylenedioxy-4′-O-(2ξ,3-dihydroxy-3-methylbutyl)-dihydrostilbene (1) and 3,5-dimethoxy-4′-O-(2ξ,3-dihydroxy-3-methylbutyl)-dihydrostilbene (2), was isolated from Indigofera pulchra as an inseparable mixture. Several isolation strategies, including multiple preparative TLC, SPE and finally HPLC were undertaken in an attempt to separate these metabolites, but to no avail. Structure elucidation on the mixture was conducted and we were able to establish the structures of these compounds unambiguously by MS and a series of 1D and 2D-NMR analyses. The mixture of these dihydrostilbenes was analyzed by NMR spectroscopy and 1 and 2 were in a ratio of 52:48, respectively, and this was evaluated against a panel of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and multidrug-resistant variants of this organism, including a strain over-expressing the NorA efflux pump; weak activity was observed

Phytochemical screening was carried out on the ethylacetate portion of the ethanolic extract of the leaves of Pseudocedrella kotschyii and then evaluated for its analgesic (acetic acid-induced writhing) and anti-inflammatory (raw egg albumin-induced oedema) activities in mice and rats respectively. Phytochemical screening of the ethylacetate partition portion of ethanolic extract revealed the presence of flavonoids, glycosides and tannins as major chemical constituents. Alkaloids saponins, cardiac glycosides, steroids were not dictated in the extract. The ethylacetate extract (50 and 100 mg/kg i.p) exhibited significant activity (p<0.05) against acetic acid-induced writhing in a dose dependent manner. In the anti-inflammatory activity the ethylacetate extract (50 and 100 mg/kg i.p.) caused a slight effect against the raw egg albumin-induced oedema. The effect was however observed not to be dose dependent. All these effects were compared with standard drug piroxicam (20 mg/kg i.p.)

Irrigation water conservation methods are strategies for reducing water demand and increasing its availability. This research assessed the level of farmers’ awareness and practices of irrigation water conservation methods in Kano State, Nigeria. A survey was conducted in twenty (20) irrigation projects located at various local government area within the state. Structured questionnaire was used in collecting information from the farmers using Kobo collect application and descriptive statistic was used to analyses the data obtained. Based on the result obtained from the survey 85.68% of the respondent’s uses dams as their source of irrigation water while 10.59% and 3.73% uses tube well and river as their sources of water, respectively. The survey revealed that 74.12% of the farmers do not experience decline in water supply while 25.88% of farmers encounter shortage of water supply, and this may result from seepage loses, present of weed or siltation of the conveyance canals at the upstream of the schemes. However, about 62.94% of the responded were unaware and do not practice any water conservation techniques while 27.84% and 9.22% were applying manure and rice straw, respectively to conserve moisture as a means of water conservation. It was concluded that the irrigation water conservation is poorly practiced by the farmers in Kano State and it is based on this note that government, water users’ associations and other stakeholders should provide a policy that encourage farmers to adopt some water conservation techniques and concepts for optimum utilization of water resource.
