    REALITY OF HUBRIS SYNDROME THROUGH HERMAN MELVILLE’S NOVEL MOBY DICK

    Exposing  hubris syndrome, a behavior pattern that is not in accordance with the norms of standard behavior and becomes part of a mental disorder is  the objective of the study. This syndrome usually occurs in someone with power in hand, tending to be tyrannical and feeling to be   always right. In the study of literature Hubris syndrome refers to the tragic flaw that brings a person, usually an important figure, to a self-destruction. Hubris syndrome can occur to anyone. The method used is descriptive qualitative tied to things experienced by the community termed a social phenomenon. The results show that the central figure in this novel, a captain of a whale hunting vessel, experiences hubris syndrome with three prominent patterns of behavior: narcissistic propensity, excessive confidence and loneliness. In the first pattern, the person concerned feels like a superhuman deserving to be admired and attended to. The second, excessive self-confidence cannot be accepted by rational thinking. The third is the consequence of the first two patterns of living a life of solitude because of losing contact with the surroundings. The storyline ends tragically; the entire crew is killed by the whale and only one left and becomes a narrator. Hubris syndrome in the novel is a reality meaning that anyone who has a certain position tends to have Hubris syndrome and this is in line with the findings in the field with a percentage reaching 92

    ANGUISH IN ALEXANDER DUMAS’ NOVEL THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO

    The research is conducted based on the novel The Count of Monte Cristo, written by a French writer Alexander Dumas. The focus goes to anguish experienced by the protagonist of the novel, Edmond Dante, a young and handsome sailor with a brilliant prospects in career making him plunged into life of anguish. He is arrested for no reason, sent to jail with inhuman treatment. Descriptive qualitative method is applied to reveal that literary works are mirrors of all the occurrences in society. This is in line with the sociology of literature also implemented here as the approach to further analysis of the subject matters having three aspects to be used as a literary research guidelines: social contexts of the author, already showed by the author, literature as the reflection of society, revealed through the text tending to social reality and functions of literature as entertainer or remodel of society, exposed through the responses of the readers.     Hate Speech on Social Media: A Pragmatic Approach

    This research is based on people’s behavior in communicating on social media, especially Facebook, which is currently developing without boundaries. In expressing their thoughts, a person often does not maintain ethics and provisions in communicating on social media. For personal gain, individuals or groups of people use language for the purpose of humiliating, insulting, degrading and defaming other individuals or groups of society they dislike. This phenomenon is widely known as hate speech. In line with the Pragmatic Approach, referring to the study of language use with its actual usage aspects, the utterances produced by language users have an effect that could influence the listener to grasp the meaning conveyed and take action as a result of the utterance. This study aims to reveal the types of hate speech on social media based on the criteria developed by Austin, and the meaning of hate speech spoken by individuals to other individuals on Facebook social media, using qualitative descriptive methods. The results show that hate speech on social media can be classified based on illocutionary acts developed by Austin, into verdictive, behabitives, and expositive.     IDENTIFIKASI CAMPUR KODE BAHASA INDONESIA DAN BAHASA TAMIL PADA REMAJA ETNIS TAMIL DI KELURAHAN AUR KECAMATAN MEDAN MAIMUN

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bentuk campur kode bahasa Tamil dalam tuturan berbahasa Indonesia pada kalangan remaja etnis Tamil di Kelurahan Aur, untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor penyebab terjadinya campur kode bahasa Tamil dalam tuturan berbahasa Indonesia pada kalangan remaja etnis Tamil di Kelurahan Aur dan untuk mengetahui keragaman bahasa yang terjadi di kalangan remaja etnis Tamil di Kelurahan Aur. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori sosiolinguistik tentang campur kode yang dikemukakan oleh Chaer, (2004:115). Hasil yang ditemukan dari penelitian ini adalah terdapat bentuk percampuran bahasa antara bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Tamil di kalangan remaja etnis Tamil berupa campur kode kata yang teridiri dari 16 bentuk, campur kode frasa yang terdiri dari 13 bentuk dan campur kode klausa yang terdiri dari 8 bentuk. Selanjutnya terdapat faktor-faktor penyebab terjadinya campur kode bahasa Tamil dalam tuturan berbahasa Indonesia pada kalangan remaja etnis Tamil di Kelurahan Aur yaitu sebagai penutur dan kebiasaan. Dari hasil penemuan tersebut menunjukan bahwa percampuran bahasa antara bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Tamil yang disebut campur kode dalam dialog yang dilakukan para remaja etnis Tamil benar-benar terjadi dan selalu dilakukan oleh para penutur

    Marital Failure As a Social Reality in Sidney Sheldon’s Novel The Other Side of Midnight

    This research deals with literary works as a medium for conveying reality of social problems through Sydney Sheldon’s novel The Other Side of Midnight. One of the issues depicted in the novel is marital failure. The husband, as one of the characters in the novel, has a prestigious job, a pilot; and with an appealing appearance, he easily gets beautiful women around him. There are some various causal factors as the triggers of marital failure such as infidelity, career, selfishness, social welfare, age education, and financial problems; however in this research, the causal factors of marital failure discussed are triggered by infidelity, career, and selfishness. The method used is mixed, qualitative and quantitative. The combination of both designs provides a more detailed description, information and understanding of the object of study. Quantitative method is related to numerical variables which are further described through qualitative design. The number of respondents is 40 and selected randomly in Medan city. The social and cultural background is adapted to the object of research. The results show that there are three main factors causing marital failure in the novel: infidelity, career and selfishness. The findings of the research are in line with the field research. 97.5% of respondents agree that literary work is a medium for disclosing social problems; 2.5% express support. In the case of marital failure as a social problem, 97.5 respondents state a strong agreement and 2.5% express support. In things related to the trigger of marital failure: infidelity, career and selfishness, 100% of respondents strongly agree.     Keywords: marital failure, infidelity, career, selfishnes

    Based on observations that have been made to the child's speech is still not perfect and learning activities by teachers less appealing to children. It is therefore necessary given activity play charades. This study aims to determine the influence of playing hangman on speaking skills of children in kindergarten courier mother of the golden sand. The sample used in this study were 23 children. Technical analysis of the data used is the t-test using SPSS charades program 20. The hypothesis of this study is a significant difference between playing with the ability to speak kindergarten aged 5-6 years in TK Titipan Ibu Pasir Emas District Singingi.It is known from the analysis of data obtained = 15,724 and p = 0,000 for p < 0,05, it can be concluded Ha is received and a significant difference between playing charades with the child's ability to speak, so it could mean that Ho is rejected and Ha accepted which means that there are significant differences between before and after use activity playing hangman on the ability to speak of children aged 5-6 years in kindergarten Titipan Ibu Pasir Emas that is by the amount of N gain = 20%

    LOCAL WISDOM IN COFFEE CAFÉ IN MEDAN: ANTHROPOLINGUISTIC APPROACH

    The tradition of drinking coffee, as a cultural heritage of Indonesia, has existed for generations in the city of Medan, the capital of the province of North Sumatra and Sumatra is also a coffee-producing region in Indonesia, so it is not surprising to see the rise of coffee shop business with the current name of coffee café in Medan. Drinking coffee at the café is not just a necessity, it has become a lifestyle and is not limited to age, profession or social status; all the people gather and unite in this place and produce a togetherness. By means of  Anthropolinguistic approach, the one referring  to the study of humans and cultures related to linguistic functions and all the dynamics inherent in human activities, the  research, aimed at revealing local wisdom in coffee cafes in the city of Medan, and based on the notion of cultural heritage preservation, is conducted  using descriptive qualitative methods, revealing a series of community activities related to coffee café in Medan, supported by validity data in the form of interviews and questionnaires, with the key instruments, respondents, who truly understand the phenomenon of the tradition of drinking coffee. The results show that local wisdom is found in the coffee café in Medan, with a percentage of 96, having three points of discussion: Social Interaction Establishment through Polite Language (88%), Cultural Heritage Preservation (96%) and Economic Growth Improvement (92%)
