    Implementation and effectiveness monitoring of forestry best management practices on harvested sites in South Carolina

    In South Carolina, silvicultural guidelines were first published in 1976 by the South Carolina Forestry Association. Best Management Practices for South Carolina's Forest Wetlands was published by the South Carolina Forestry Commission in 1989. The first attempt at monitoring Best Management Practices compliance in South Carolina was completed in 1990. At that time, overall BMP compliance for the state was 84%. The current study was designed to build upon this initial monitoring effort by Hook et al. to determine the level of compliance with BMPs a s well as the major factors which affect BMP compliance for timber harvesting operations in South Carolina

    Numerical properties of staggered quarks with a taste-dependent mass term

    The numerical properties of staggered Dirac operators with a taste-dependent mass term proposed by Adams [1,2] and by Hoelbling [3] are compared with those of ordinary staggered and Wilson Dirac operators. In the free limit and on (quenched) interacting configurations, we consider their topological properties, their spectrum, and the resulting pion mass. Although we also consider the spectral structure, topological properties, locality, and computational cost of an overlap operator with a staggered kernel, we call attention to the possibility of using the Adams and Hoelbling operators without the overlap construction. In particular, the Hoelbling operator could be used to simulate two degenerate flavors without additive mass renormalization, and thus without fine-tuning in the chiral limit.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures.     In search of community history

    This editorial response to the preceding article by Dennis Mills addresses the meaning of community history. Rejecting an over-tight definition, we argue for a methodologically distinct community history, combining a micro-historical approach with a sensitivity to the discursive construction of the term 'community'. Furthermore the role of family and community historians should be to adapt a critical stance towards contemporary meanings of both past 'communities' and past 'families'. The article concludes that Withington and Shephard's schema for approaching the history of 'community' offers a practical way forward for the family and community historian

    The University of Akron Human Powered Vehicle Team

    The University of Akron Human Powered Vehicle Team’s 2016 vehicle, Klokan, was designed, manufactured and tested with safety, reliability, performance and ease of use in mind. The vehicle is a fully faired tadpole trike with a lightweight aluminum frame constructed from 6061-T6 tubing having a total weight of 8.9 lbs. To complement the lightweight frame, the fairing is constructed from polycarbonate, PETG and carbon fiber strips which combine into a lightweight, easy to manufacture weather barrier and aerodynamic structure. Klokan was designed to be a safe and efficient mode of everyday transportation which ensures that riders are sufficiently protected by a rollover protection system (RPS) which was designed to meet the ASME HPVC requirements with a minimum safety factor of two. The project scope includes all aspects of design and fabrication to create a vehicle that is easy to manufacture, easy to use, safe, and low cost to facilitate its usability in everyday situations. The team completed research on how to improve the manufacturability, reliability, and performance through analysis of designs, computer based modeling, and physical testing to validate that the bike meets team goals as well as exceeding the requirements set by the ASME Human Powered Vehicle Competition. The frame was designed in a manner that reduces welding through the use of bends and allows for precision fixturing to be manufactured and used to construct multiple frames quickly and efficiently. The fairing’s modular construction reduces the need for specialized tooling while minimizing weight and construction time. The team designed and successfully implemented an innovative rollover warning system which actively monitors the percentage of vehicle load on each tire and warns the driver through audible tone and visual warning light prior to a dangerous rollover becoming imminent
