Using the local gyrokinetic code, GS2, to investigate global ITG modes in tokamaks. (I) s- model with profile and flow shear effects
This paper combines results from a local gyrokinetic code with analytical
theory to reconstruct the global eigenmode structure of the linearly unstable
ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) mode with adiabatic electrons. The simulations
presented here employ the s- tokamak equilibrium model. Local
gyrokinetic calculations, using GS2 have been performed over a range of radial
surfaces, x, and for ballooning phase angle, p, in the range -, to map out the complex local mode frequency, . Assuming a quadratic radial profile for the
drive, namely , (holding constant all other equilibrium
profiles such as safety factor, magnetic shear etc.), has a
stationary point. The reconstructed global mode then sits on the outboard mid
plane of the tokamak plasma, and is known as a conventional or isolated mode,
with global growth rate, ~ Max[], where
is the local growth rate. Taking the radial variation in
other equilibrium profiles (e.g safety factor q(x)) into account, removes the
stationary point in and results in a mode that peaks
slightly away from the outboard mid-plane with a reduced global growth rate.
Finally, the influence of flow shear has also been investigated through a
Doppler shift, , where n
is the toroidal mode number and incorporates the effect of
flow shear. The equilibrium profile variation introduces an asymmetry to the
growth rate spectrum with respect to the sign of ,

Generalised ballooning theory of two-dimensional tokamak modes
In this work, using solutions from a local gyrokinetic flux-tube code combined with higher order ballooning theory, a new analytical approach is developed to reconstruct the global linear mode structure with associated global mode frequency. In addition to the isolated mode (IM), which usually peaks on the outboard mid-plane, the higher order ballooning theory has also captured other types of less unstable global modes: (a) the weakly asymmetric ballooning theory (WABT) predicts a mixed mode (MM) that undergoes a small poloidal shift away from the outboard mid-plane, (b) a relatively more stable general mode (GM) balloons on the top (or bottom) of the tokamak plasma. In this paper, an analytic approach is developed to combine these disconnected analytical limits into a single generalised ballooning theory. This is used to investigate how an IM behaves under the effect of sheared toroidal flow. For small values of flow an IM initially converts into a MM where the results of WABT are recaptured, and eventually, as the flow increases, the mode asymptotically becomes a GM on the top (or bottom) of the plasma. This may be an ingredient in models for understanding why in some experimental scenarios, instead of large edge localised modes (ELMs), small ELMs are observed. Finally, our theory can have other important consequences, especially for calculations involving Reynolds stress driven intrinsic rotation through the radial asymmetry in the global mode structures. Understanding the intrinsic rotation is significant because external torque in a plasma the size of ITER is expected to be relatively low
Positron-molecule interactions: resonant attachment, annihilation, and bound states
This article presents an overview of current understanding of the interaction
of low-energy positrons with molecules with emphasis on resonances, positron
attachment and annihilation. Annihilation rates measured as a function of
positron energy reveal the presence of vibrational Feshbach resonances (VFR)
for many polyatomic molecules. These resonances lead to strong enhancement of
the annihilation rates. They also provide evidence that positrons bind to many
molecular species. A quantitative theory of VFR-mediated attachment to small
molecules is presented. It is tested successfully for selected molecules (e.g.,
methyl halides and methanol) where all modes couple to the positron continuum.
Combination and overtone resonances are observed and their role is elucidated.
In larger molecules, annihilation rates from VFR far exceed those explicable on
the basis of single-mode resonances. These enhancements increase rapidly with
the number of vibrational degrees of freedom. While the details are as yet
unclear, intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution to states that do not
couple directly to the positron continuum appears to be responsible for these
enhanced annihilation rates. Downshifts of the VFR from the vibrational mode
energies have provided binding energies for thirty species. Their dependence
upon molecular parameters and their relationship to positron-atom and
positron-molecule binding energy calculations are discussed. Feshbach
resonances and positron binding to molecules are compared with the analogous
electron-molecule (negative ion) cases. The relationship of VFR-mediated
annihilation to other phenomena such as Doppler-broadening of the gamma-ray
annihilation spectra, annihilation of thermalized positrons in gases, and
annihilation-induced fragmentation of molecules is discussed.Comment: 50 pages, 40 figure
Spin-dependent effective interactions for halo nuclei
We discuss the spin-dependence of the effective two-body interactions
appropriate for three-body computations. The only reasonable choice seems to be
the fine and hyperfine interactions known for atomic electrons interacting with
the nucleus. One exception is the nucleon-nucleon interaction imposing a
different type of symmetry. We use the two-neutron halo nucleus 11Li as
illustration. We demonstrate that models with the wrong spin-dependence are
basically without predictive power. The Pauli forbidden core and valence states

On handling urban informality in southern Africa
In this article I reconsider the handling of urban informality by urban planning and management systems in southern Africa. I argue that authorities have a fetish about formality and that this is fuelled by an obsession with urban modernity. I stress that the desired city, largely inspired by Western notions of modernity, has not been and cannot be realized. Using illustrative cases of top–down interventions, I highlight and interrogate three strategies that authorities have deployed to handle informality in an effort to create or defend the modern city. I suggest that the fetish is built upon a desire for an urban modernity based on a concept of formal order that the authorities believe cannot coexist with the “disorder” and spatial “unruliness” of informality. I question the authorities' conviction that informality is an abomination that needs to be “converted”, dislocated or annihilated. I conclude that the very configuration of urban governance and socio-economic systems in the region, like the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, renders informality inevitable and its eradication impossible

Ecology of Phlebotomine Sand Flies in the Rural Community of Mont Rolland (Thiès Region, Senegal): Area of Transmission of Canine Leishmaniasis
BACKGROUND: Different epidemiological studies previously indicated that canine leishmaniasis is present in the region of Thiès (Senegal). However, the risks to human health, the transmission cycle and particularly the implicated vectors are unknown. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To improve our knowledge on the population of phlebotomine sand flies and the potential vectors of canine leishmaniasis, sand flies were collected using sticky traps, light traps and indoor spraying method using pyrethroid insecticides in 16 villages of the rural community of Mont Rolland (Thiès region) between March and July 2005. The 3788 phlebotomine sand flies we collected (2044 males, 1744 females) were distributed among 9 species of which 2 belonged to the genus Phlebotomus: P. duboscqi (vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Senegal) and P. rodhaini. The other species belonged to the genus Sergentomyia: S. adleri, S. clydei, S. antennata, S. buxtoni, S. dubia, S. schwetzi and S. magna. The number of individuals and the species composition differed according to the type of trap, suggesting variable, species-related degrees of endophily or exophily. The two species of the genus Phlebotomus were markedly under-represented in comparison to the species of the genus Sergentomyia. This study also shows a heterogeneous spatial distribution within the rural community that could be explained by the different ecosystems and particularly the soil characteristics of this community. Finally, the presence of the S. dubia species appeared to be significantly associated with canine leishmaniasis seroprevalence in dogs. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our data allow us to hypothesize that the species of the genus Sergentomyia and particularly the species S. dubia and S. schwetzi might be capable of transmitting canine leishmaniasis. These results challenge the dogma that leishmaniasis is exclusively transmitted by species of the genus Phlebotomus in the Old World. This hypothesis should be more thoroughly evaluated
Standardization of Laboratory Methods for the PERCH Study.
The Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health study was conducted across 7 diverse research sites and relied on standardized clinical and laboratory methods for the accurate and meaningful interpretation of pneumonia etiology data. Blood, respiratory specimens, and urine were collected from children aged 1-59 months hospitalized with severe or very severe pneumonia and community controls of the same age without severe pneumonia and were tested with an extensive array of laboratory diagnostic tests. A standardized testing algorithm and standard operating procedures were applied across all study sites. Site laboratories received uniform training, equipment, and reagents for core testing methods. Standardization was further assured by routine teleconferences, in-person meetings, site monitoring visits, and internal and external quality assurance testing. Targeted confirmatory testing and testing by specialized assays were done at a central reference laboratory
Using and Reporting the Delphi Method for Selecting Healthcare Quality Indicators: A Systematic Review
OBJECTIVE: Delphi technique is a structured process commonly used to developed healthcare quality indicators, but there is a little recommendation for researchers who wish to use it. This study aimed 1) to describe reporting of the Delphi method to develop quality indicators, 2) to discuss specific methodological skills for quality indicators selection 3) to give guidance about this practice. METHODOLOGY AND MAIN FINDING: Three electronic data bases were searched over a 30 years period (1978-2009). All articles that used the Delphi method to select quality indicators were identified. A standardized data extraction form was developed. Four domains (questionnaire preparation, expert panel, progress of the survey and Delphi results) were assessed. Of 80 included studies, quality of reporting varied significantly between items (9% for year's number of experience of the experts to 98% for the type of Delphi used). Reporting of methodological aspects needed to evaluate the reliability of the survey was insufficient: only 39% (31/80) of studies reported response rates for all rounds, 60% (48/80) that feedback was given between rounds, 77% (62/80) the method used to achieve consensus and 57% (48/80) listed quality indicators selected at the end of the survey. A modified Delphi procedure was used in 49/78 (63%) with a physical meeting of the panel members, usually between Delphi rounds. Median number of panel members was 17(Q1:11; Q3:31). In 40/70 (57%) studies, the panel included multiple stakeholders, who were healthcare professionals in 95% (38/40) of cases. Among 75 studies describing criteria to select quality indicators, 28 (37%) used validity and 17(23%) feasibility. CONCLUSION: The use and reporting of the Delphi method for quality indicators selection need to be improved. We provide some guidance to the investigators to improve the using and reporting of the method in future surveys
Significant sequelae after bacterial meningitis in Niger: a cohort study
Beside high mortality, acute bacterial meningitis may lead to a high frequency of neuropsychological sequelae. The Sahelian countries belonging to the meningitis belt experience approximately 50% of the meningitis cases occurring in the world. Studies in Africa have shown that N. meningitidis could cause hearing loss in up to 30% of the cases, exceeding sometimes measles. The situation is similar in Niger which experiences yearly meningitis epidemics and where rehabilitation wards are rare and hearing aids remain unaffordable.
