    Equality of Corecursive Streams Defined by Finitary Equational Systems

    In recent work, non-regular streams have been defined corecursively, by representing them with finitary equational systems built on top of various operators, besides the standard constructor. With finitary equational systems based only on the stream constructor, one can use the free theory of regular (a.k.a. rational) trees to get a sound and complete procedure to decide whether two streams are equal. However, this is not the case if one allows other operators in equations, since the underlying equational theory becomes non-trivial, hence equality of regular trees is too strong to guarantee termination of corecursive functions defined even only with the constructor and tail operators. To overcome this problem, we provide a weaker definition of equality between streams denoted by finitary equational systems built on different stream operators, including tail operator and constructor, and prove its soundness

    Enhancing Expressivity of Checked Corecursive Streams

    We propose a novel approach to stream definition and manipulation. Our solution is based on two key ideas. Regular corecursion, which avoids non termination by detecting cyclic calls, is enhanced, by allowing in equations defining streams other operators besides the stream constructor. In this way, some non-regular streams are definable. Furthermore, execution includes a runtime check to ensure that the stream generated by a function call is well-defined, in the sense that access to an arbitrary index always succeeds. We extend the technique beyond the simple stream operators considered in previous work, notably by adding an interleaving combinator which has a non-trivial recursion scheme

    Biomarkers of aging in HIV: inflammation and the microbiome

    Purpose: HIV-infected subjects present increased levels of inflammatory cytokines and T cell activation in the peripheral blood despite suppressive combination antiretroviral therapy which renders them susceptible to premature aging. The purpose of the present work was to review existing evidence on the ways in which the anatomical and microbiological abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract can represent a major cause of organ disease in HIV infection. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the Pubmed database for articles published from 2014 to 2018. We included studies on inflammatory/activation biomarkers associated with cardiovascular and bone disease, neurocognitive impairment and serious non-AIDS events in HIV-infected subjects. We also included researches which linked peripheral inflammation/activation to the anatomical, immune and microbiological alterations of the gastrointestinal tract. Results: Recent literature data confirm the association between non-infectious comorbidities and inflammation in HIV infection which may be driven by gastrointestinal tract abnormalities, specifically microbial translocation and dysbiosis. Furthermore, there is mounting evidence on the possible role of metabolic functions of the microbiota in the pathogenesis of premature aging in the HIV-infected population. Conclusions: Biomarkers need to be validated for their use in the management of HIV infection. Compounds which counteract microbial translocation, inflammation and dysbiosis have been investigated as alternative therapeutic strategies in viro-suppressed HIV-infected individuals, but appear to have limited efficacy, probably due to the multifactorial pathogenesis of non-infectious comorbidities in this setting

    Ozognathus cornutus (LeConte, 1859) is recorded on the invasive alien tree Robinia pseudocacia L. (Fabaceae) in an urban area in Italy. The species has already been reported in two other Italian regions, but this is the first record for the Sardinian fauna. Due to the great adaptability of this alien species and the increasingly cosmopolitan trend, we suggest monitoring it with caution for early detection and to plan an appropriate rapid management response

    Perceived Readiness for Hospital Discharge in Adult Medical-Surgical Patients

    Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify predictors and outcomes of adult medical-surgical patients\u27 perceptions of their readiness for hospital discharge. Design: A correlational, prospective, longitudinal design with path analyses was used to explore relationships among transition theory-related variables. Setting: Midwestern tertiary medical center. Sample: 147 adult medical-surgical patients. Methods: Predictor variables included patient characteristics, hospitalization factors, and nursing practices that were measured prior to hospital discharge using a study enrollment form, the Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale, and the Care Coordination Scale. Discharge readiness was measured using the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale administered within 4 hours prior to discharge. Outcomes were measured 3 weeks postdischarge with the Post-Discharge Coping Difficulty Scale and self-reported utilization of health services. Findings: Living alone, discharge teaching (amount of content received and nurses\u27 skill in teaching delivery), and care coordination explained 51% of readiness for discharge score variance. Patient age and discharge readiness explained 16% of variance in postdischarge coping difficulty. Greater readiness for discharge was predictive of fewer readmissions. Conclusions: Quality of the delivery of discharge teaching was the strongest predictor of discharge readiness. Study results provided support for Meleis\u27 transitions theory as a useful model for conceptualizing and investigating the discharge transition. Implications for Practice: The study results have implications for the CNS role in patient and staff education, system building for the postdischarge transition, and measurement of clinical care outcomes

    Discovering granger-causal features from deep learning networks

    © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018. In this research, we propose deep networks that discover Granger causes from multivariate temporal data generated in financial markets. We introduce a Deep Neural Network (DNN) and a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) that discover Granger-causal features for bivariate regression on bivariate time series data distributions. These features are subsequently used to discover Granger-causal graphs for multivariate regression on multivariate time series data distributions. Our supervised feature learning process in proposed deep regression networks has favourable F-tests for feature selection and t-tests for model comparisons. The experiments, minimizing root mean squared errors in the regression analysis on real stock market data obtained from Yahoo Finance, demonstrate that our causal features significantly improve the existing deep learning regression models

    Fluidized bed gasification of biomass from plant-assisted bioremediation: Fate of contaminants

    Fluidized-bed gasification (FBG) of Phyto-assisted Bioremediation (PABR) biomass is analyzed focusing on the contaminants' dispersion. Poplar pruning coming from an area contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and heavy metals (HM) are considered. The biomass analysis showed relevant contents in HMs, especially Cd and Cr, and no significant PCB content. FBG process was analyzed to: a) track pollutants, b) detect contaminants in the FBG and c) investigate the HMs concentration in the produced streams. The results showed that most of the metals are concentrated in the ashes collected in the bottom of the reactor (Pb, Cd, Cu, Cr), or in the cyclone (B, Na, Mg, Al, K and Fe). Interestingly, metals are also released by the olivine bed (Mg, Fe, Ni and Al) and transported downstream. Consistent fractions of Zn and Fe (also Cu) were detected in the fugitive ashes. As for the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) concentration, we noted similarities between PABR and virgin biomass syngas streams. A reduced-scale process was carried out in TGA-DTA to investigate the potential of such technique in reproducing the main features of the FBG process. Comparable results were obtained, thus suggesting its possible application for small-scale preliminary assessment of FBG process
