Double-plating of ovine critical sized defects of the tibia: a low morbidity model enabling continuous in vivo monitoring of bone healing
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recent studies using sheep critical sized defect models to test tissue engineered products report high morbidity and complications rates. This study evaluates a large bone defect model in the sheep tibia, stabilized with two, a novel Carbon fibre Poly-ether-ether-ketone (CF-PEEK) and a locking compression plate (LCP) which could sustain duration for up to 6 month with an acceptable low complication rate.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A large bone defect of 3 cm was performed in the mid diaphysis of the right tibia in 33 sheep. The defect was stabilised with the CF - PEEK plate and an LCP. All sheep were supported with slings for 8 weeks after surgery. The study was carried out for 3 months in 6 and for 6 months in 27 animals.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The surgical procedure could easily be performed in all sheep and continuous in vivo radiographic evaluation of the defect was possible. This long bone critical sized defect model shows with 6.1% a low rate of complications compared with numbers mentioned in the literature.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This experimental animal model could serve as a standard model in comparative research. A well defined standard model would reduce the number of experimental animals needed in future studies and would therefore add to ethical considerations.</p
Long-term cycles in the history of life: Periodic biodiversity in the Paleobiology Database
Time series analysis of fossil biodiversity of marine invertebrates in the
Paleobiology Database (PBDB) shows a significant periodicity at approximately
63 My, in agreement with previous analyses based on the Sepkoski database. I
discuss how this result did not appear in a previous analysis of the PBDB. The
existence of the 63 My periodicity, despite very different treatment of
systematic error in both PBDB and Sepkoski databases strongly argues for
consideration of its reality in the fossil record. Cross-spectral analysis of
the two datasets finds that a 62 My periodicity coincides in phase by 1.6 My,
equivalent to better than the errors in either measurement. Consequently, the
two data sets not only contain the same strong periodicity, but its peaks and
valleys closely correspond in time. Two other spectral peaks appear in the PBDB
analysis, but appear to be artifacts associated with detrending and with the
increased interval length. Sampling-standardization procedures implemented by
the PBDB collaboration suggest that the signal is not an artifact of sampling

Resilient cooling strategies – A critical review and qualitative assessment
The global effects of climate change will increase the frequency and intensity of extreme events such as heatwaves and power outages, which have consequences for buildings and their cooling systems. Buildings and their cooling systems should be designed and operated to be resilient under such events to protect occupants from potentially dangerous indoor thermal conditions. This study performed a critical review on the state-of-the-art of cooling strategies, with special attention to their performance under heatwaves and power outages. We proposed a definition of resilient cooling and described four criteria for resilience—absorptive capacity, adaptive capacity, restorative capacity, and recovery speed —and used them to qualitatively evaluate the resilience of each strategy. The literature review and qualitative analyses show that to attain resilient cooling, the four resilience criteria should be considered in the design phase of a building or during the planning of retrofits. The building and relevant cooling system characteristics should be considered simultaneously to withstand extreme events. A combination of strategies with different resilience capacities, such as a passive envelope strategy coupled with a low-energy space-cooling solution, may be needed to obtain resilient cooling. Finally, a further direction for a quantitative assessment approach has been pointed out
Bone turnover markers in sheep and goat: a review of the scientific literature
Bone turnover markers (BTMs) are product of bone cell activity and are generally divided in bone formation and bone resorption markers. The purpose of this review was to structure the available information on the use of BTMs in studies on small ruminants, especially for monitoring their variations related to diet, exercise, gestation and metabolic lactation state, circadian and seasonal variations, and also during skeletal growth. Pre-clinical and translational studies using BTMs with sheep and goats as animal models in orthopaedic research studies to help in the evaluation of the fracture healing process and osteoporosis research are also described in this review. The available information from the reviewed studies was systematically organized in order to highlight the most promising BTMs in small ruminant research, as well as provide a wide view of the use of sheep and goat as animal models in orthopaedic research, type of markers and commercial assay kits with cross-reactivity in sheep and goat, method of sample and storage of serum and urine for bone turnover markers determination and the usefulness and limitations of bone turnover markers in the different studies, therefore an effective tool for researchers that seek answers to different questions while using BTMs in small ruminants.José Arthur de A. : The completion of the human genome project and the accomplished milestones in the human
proteome project; as well as the progress made so far in computational bioinformatics and “big data” processing have
contributed immensely to individualized/personalized medicine in the developed world.At the dawn of precision medicine, various omics-based therapies and bioengineering can now be
applied accurately for the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and risk stratifcation of cancer in a manner that was
hitherto not thought possible. The widespread introduction of genomics and other omics-based approaches into
the postgraduate training curriculum of diverse medical and dental specialties, including pathology has improved
the profciency of practitioners in the use of novel molecular signatures in patient management. In addition, intricate
details about disease disparity among diferent human populations are beginning to emerge. This would facilitate the
use of tailor-made novel theranostic methods based on emerging molecular evidences
