    Low back pain: A major global problem for which the chiropractic profession needs to take more care

    An important series of papers have been published in the Lancet. These papers provide a comprehensive update for the major global problem of low back pain, and the challenges that low back pain presents to healthcare practitioners and policy makers. Chiropractors are well placed to reduce the burden of low back pain, but not all that chiropractors do is supported by robust, contemporary evidence. This commentary summarises the Lancet articles. We also make suggestions for how the chiropractic profession should most effectively help people with low back pain by implementing practices supported by high quality evidence

    How to find the holonomy algebra of a Lorentzian manifold

    Manifolds with exceptional holonomy play an important role in string theory, supergravity and M-theory. It is explained how one can find the holonomy algebra of an arbitrary Riemannian or Lorentzian manifold. Using the de~Rham and Wu decompositions, this problem is reduced to the case of locally indecomposable manifolds. In the case of locally indecomposable Riemannian manifolds, it is known that the holonomy algebra can be found from the analysis of special geometric structures on the manifold. If the holonomy algebra g⊂so(1,n−1)\mathfrak{g}\subset\mathfrak{so}(1,n-1) of a locally indecomposable Lorentzian manifold (M,g)(M,g) of dimension nn is different from so(1,n−1)\mathfrak{so}(1,n-1), then it is contained in the similitude algebra sim(n−2)\mathfrak{sim}(n-2). There are 4 types of such holonomy algebras. Criterion how to find the type of g\mathfrak{g} are given, and special geometric structures corresponding to each type are described. To each g\mathfrak{g} there is a canonically associated subalgebra h⊂so(n−2)\mathfrak{h}\subset\mathfrak{so}(n-2).     Strategy management through quantitative modelling of performance measurement systems

    This paper is based on previous works on performance measurement and on quantification of relationships between factors which affect performance. It demonstrates how tools and techniques developed can be used to evaluate the performance of alternative strategic choices through a quantitative approach to modelling of performance measurement systems. The paper provides a brief background to the research problem and preceding works. The tools and techniques used are briefly introduced. Use of these tools and techniques to evaluate the performance of alternative manufacturing strategies is demonstrated. Finally, the capability of the approach to deal with dynamic environments is demonstrated using sensitivity analysis

    Ambiguities in pseudoscalar-meson photoproduction, arising from incomplete experimental data, have analogs in pion-nucleon scattering. Amplitude ambiguities have important implications for the problems of amplitude extraction and resonance identification in partial-wave analysis.     A dedicated haem lyase is required for the maturation of a novel bacterial cytochrome c with unconventional covalent haem binding

    In bacterial c-type cytochromes, the haem cofactor is covalently attached via two cysteine residues organized in a haem c-binding motif. Here, a novel octa-haem c protein, MccA, is described that contains only seven conventional haem c-binding motifs (CXXCH), in addition to several single cysteine residues and a conserved CH signature. Mass spectrometric analysis of purified MccA from Wolinella succinogenes suggests that two of the single cysteine residues are actually part of an unprecedented CX15CH sequence involved in haem c binding. Spectroscopic characterization of MccA identified an unusual high-potential haem c with a red-shifted absorption maximum, not unlike that of certain eukaryotic cytochromes c that exceptionally bind haem via only one thioether bridge. A haem lyase gene was found to be specifically required for the maturation of MccA in W. succinogenes. Equivalent haem lyase-encoding genes belonging to either the bacterial cytochrome c biogenesis system I or II are present in the vicinity of every known mccA gene suggesting a dedicated cytochrome c maturation pathway. The results necessitate reconsideration of computer-based prediction of putative haem c-binding motifs in bacterial proteomes

    A Study of the Scintillation Induced by Alpha Particles and Gamma Rays in Liquid Xenon in an Electric Field

    Scintillation produced in liquid xenon by alpha particles and gamma rays has been studied as a function of applied electric field. For back scattered gamma rays with energy of about 200 keV, the number of scintillation photons was found to decrease by 64+/-2% with increasing field strength. Consequently, the pulse shape discrimination power between alpha particles and gamma rays is found to reduce with increasing field, but remaining non-zero at higher fields.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted by Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research

    Evidence for hadronic deconfinement in pˉ\bar{p}-p collisions at 1.8 TeV

    We have measured deconfined hadronic volumes, 4.4<V<13.04.4 < V < 13.0 fm3^{3}, produced by a one dimensional (1D) expansion. These volumes are directly proportional to the charged particle pseudorapidity densities 6.75<dNc/dη<20.26.75 < dN_{c}/d\eta < 20.2. The hadronization temperature is T=179.5±5T = 179.5 \pm 5 (syst) MeV. Using Bjorken's 1D model,the hadronization energy density is ϔF=1.10±0.26\epsilon_{F} = 1.10 \pm 0.26 (stat) GeV/fm3^{3} corresponding to an excitation of 24.8±6.224.8 \pm 6.2 (stat) quark-gluon degrees of freedom.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, 2 table

    Health Insurance Status, Psychological Processes, and Older African Americans\u27 Use of Preventive Care

    The current study examined the influence of health insurance, psychological processes (i.e. psychological competency and vulnerability), and the interaction of these two constructs on older African Americans\u27 utilization of five preventive care services (e.g. cholesterol screening and mammogram/prostate examination) using data from 211 older African Americans (median age = 60). In addition to direct effects, the influence of health insurance sometimes varied depending on respondents\u27 psychological competency and/or vulnerability. Policies and interventions to increase older African Americans\u27 use of preventive health services should consider structural (e.g. health insurance) and psychological (e.g. psychological competency and vulnerability) factors along with the interaction between these factors

    Inclusive meson production in peripheral collisions of ultrarelativistic heavy ions

    There exist several proposals to use Weizs\"{a}cker-Williams photons generated by ultrarelativistic heavy ions to produce exotic particles in γγ\gamma\gamma fusion reactions. To estimate the background conditions for such reactions we analyze various mechanisms of meson production in very peripheral collisions of ultrarelativistic heavy ions at RHIC and LHC energies. Besides γγ\gamma\gamma fusion they include also electromagnetic γA\gamma A interactions and strong nucleon-nucleon interactions in grazing AAAA collisions. All these processes are characterised by low multiplicities of produced particles. γA\gamma A and AAAA events are simulated by corresponding Monte Carlo codes, RELDIS and FRITIOF. In each of these processes a certain fraction of pions is produced close to the mid-rapidity region that gives a background for the γγ\gamma\gamma events. The possibility of selecting mesons produced in γγ\gamma\gamma fusion events via different ptp_t cut procedures is demonstrated.Comment: 27 pages with 4 eps-figures included, uses axodraw.sty Tab.2 and 3 correcte

    Extended Gari-Krumpelmann model fits to nucleon electromagnetic form factors

    Nucleon electromagnetic form factor data (including recent data) is fitted with models that respect the confinement and asymptotic freedom properties of QCD. Gari-Krumpelmann (GK) type models, which include the major vector meson pole contributions and at high momentum transfer conform to the predictions of perturbative QCD, are combined with Hohler-Pietarinen (HP) models, which also include the width of the rho meson and the addition of higher mass vector meson exchanges, but do not evolve into the explicit form of PQCD at high momentum transfer. Different parameterizations of the GK model's hadronic form factors, the effect of including the width of the rho meson and the addition of the next (in mass) isospin 1 vector meson are considered. The quality of fit and the consistency of the parameters select three of the combined HP/GK type models. Projections are made to the higher momentum transfers which are relevant to electron-deuteron experiments. The projections vary little for the preferred models, removing much of the ambiguity in electron-nucleus scattering predictions.Comment: 18pp, 7 figures, using RevTeX with BoxedEPS macros; 1 new figure, minor textual changes; email correspondence to [email protected]
