Does Circular Economy Affect Financial Performance? The Mediating Role of Sustainable Sup-ply Chain Management in the Automotive Industry

    Get PDF
The implementation of stricter sustainable policies and the tightening of environmental laws are forcing manufacturing companies, particularly those that make up the automotive industry, to make changes and improvements involving Circular Economy (CE) practices. However, CE practices do not always lead to an improvement in firm performance. This study analyzes the effects of the implementation of CE practices on the financial performance (FIP) of manufacturing companies in the automotive industry of Mexico, considering the mediating effect exerted by sustainable supply chain management (SSCM). The proposed model is validated through PLS-SEM using a sample of 460 companies. The results show that the FIP is strengthened through the implementation of the CE and that this effect is mediated by the commitment of the company to promote a better SSCM. This study contributes to the CE and SSCM theories by providing evidence about the positive effect that the implementation of these activities has on the performance of the automotive industry and how a SSCM equally exerts a direct and indirect effect on this. In the same way, managers can use this study and its results to make their operations more efficient and to demonstrate the effects of sustainability on the financial performance of the company

Implementing Industry 4.0 in SMEs: A Focus Group Study on Organizational Requirements

    Get PDF
In the past, literature has mainly focused on the technical aspects of Industry 4.0. A detailed analysis of the implementation processes and the related organizational requirements is therefore missing. This chapter aims to address the aforementioned gap by empirically investigating the main organizational requirements for Industry 4.0 implementation in SMEs. We focus on SMEs because they are very important for many countries and it is expected that they will face more difficulties in adopting Industry 4.0 than large companies. Based on a systematic literature review and a focus group study a set of organizational issues that might hinder Industry 4.0 implementation have been identified and classified into six categories. The results of the study have significant implications for researchers, managers, and policy-makers

    Learning from Sustainability-Oriented Innovation

This chapter argues that insights from the realm of sustainability-oriented innovation can provide useful answers to the question of why Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) would (or should) become interested in implementing responsible innovation practices. It is based on the assumption that “responsible innovation” and “sustainability-oriented innovation” are different approaches aimed at orienting innovation towards increased positive impacts on social and natural environments. Motivations and influences for pursuing sustainability-oriented inno-vation have been studied in the past, and can provide insights into reasons for pursu-ing the implementation of responsible innovation practices

Capacity of open innovation activities in fostering product and process innovation in manufacturing SMEs

    No full text
International audienceThe purpose of this research is to study whether open innovation practices in SMEs favour technological innovations and the drivers of these. We propose a model of SME open innovation based on human capital (HC) approach and the commitment to learning with an emphasis on the risk taking and the formalization of an innovation strategy. The results, on a sample of 267 SMEs, show that a manager’s attitude to risk-taking and the formalization of an innovation strategy are the most important variables which promote SME open innovation. Innovation strategy formalization leverages the impact of HC and commitment to learning on open innovation, identifying an important mediating effect. Finally, open innovation activities promote product and process innovation, although this effect is greater for outbound activities. These findings have important implications for both managers and policy-makers. © 2020, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature
