Golf’s Fiercest Tournament: Estimating the Impact of Home Course Advantage in the Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is a biennial golf tournament in which teams USA and Europe compete against each other in a match play format. The course venue for the tournament is on a rotational basis between the United States and Europe, switching off every time the tournament takes place. Using the concept of the home advantage in accordance with human capital and production theory, it is expected that the hosting country will perform better than the visiting side and have a better chance of winning. Using OLS and logistic regression models, it was found that there is a significant advantage favoring the team playing in their home country. Team USA is found to have a 34.2% increase in their probability of winning, based solely on if they are playing on a course in the United States. Other non-measurable variables such as the crowd and behavioral states of the athlete’s competing is found to have a positive effect on the home team winning

In this paper, we give a unified approach to error estimates for interpolation on sparse Gauss--Chebyshev grids for multivariate functions from Besov--type spaces with dominating mixed smoothness properties. The error bounds obtained for this method are almost optimal for the considered scale of function spaces

Wirtschaftlichkeit ist ein zwingend zu beachtendes Gebot jeder Haushaltsführung der öffentlichen Hand. Doch was ist damit konkret gemeint? Und ist immer ein- und dasselbe gemeint? Bei näherer Betrachtung erkennt man schnell, dass es unterschiedliche und teilweise miteinander wenig kompatible Wirtschaftlichkeitspostulate gibt. Eine Bibliothek, die RFID einführen will, sieht sich unterschiedlichen Kontexten gegenüber, in denen sie die Frage, ob ein Einsatz von RFID »wirtschaftlich« ist, beantworten kann bzw. muss. Einige davon werden zunächst thematisiert. Im Anschluss wird das Tool WiBe vorgestellt, das es erlaubt, die Grunddaten und Argumente für die skizzierten unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in einem kontrollierten, anerkannten und rational gesteuertem Verfahren zu gewinnen

Eine Umstellung auf RFID gestützte Medienausleihe, Medienrückgabe und Mediensicherung kann in Bibliotheken zumeist nur sukzessive erfolgen, d. h. es ist oft der Fall, dass die traditionelle Ausleihverbuchung und Buchrückgabe mittels Strichcode sowie die Diebstahlsicherung der Medien mit elektromagnetischen Sicherungsstreifen und der Einsatz von RFID gleichzeitig stattfi nden müssen. Ein Grund dafür kann sein, dass die Ausstattung aller Freihandmedien mit Transpondern eine gewisse Zeit benötigt. Ein anderer möglicher Grund in wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken besteht darin, dass viele Überlegungen dafür sprechen, bestimmte Gruppen von Medien, z. B. nicht ausleihbare Zeitschriftenbände erst gar nicht mit Transpondern auszustatten. Dies auch vor dem Hintergrund, dass aktuell kein Mensch weiß, ob die jetzt verklebten Funketiketten in zehn Jahren noch genauso zuverlässig funktionieren wie heute. Nicht verleihbare Medien müssen nicht ausgeliehen werden können, aber sie sollen auch nicht gestohlen werden. Man kann sich diverse Logiken des Parallel- oder Hybridbetriebes in der Praxis vorstellen, die jedoch alle ihre Vor- und Nachteile haben. Wenig sinnvoll scheint es beispielsweise zu sein, ein RFID-Sicherungsgate und ein EM-Sicherungsgate im Eingangsbereich hintereinander aufbauen zu wollen. Um einen Überblick über die verschiedenen Möglichkeiten des Einsatzes von Selbstbedienungskomponenten und Diebstahlsicherungen zu erhalten, ist es notwendig, sich überhaupt erst einmal einen Überblick zu verschaffen, was an Techniken nebeneinander her überhaupt einsetzbar ist bzw. was sinnvoll eingesetzt werden könnte. Erst dann sollte im nächsten Schritt unterschieden werden, ob es sich bei der anzustrebenden Lösung um Parallel- oder um Hybridbetrieb handelt

It seems that the economic future of the world will depend on the development of the countries in Asia. The economic situation in Australia will arguably change as some countries in that region have reached a satisfactory level of production and share in their developed economy. Economic presumptions delineate an optimistic view of the income’s growth in the next decade in Australia. The statistics published by reliable both national and international institutions are helpful in unraveling economic issues, which allow to portray the bright future of Australia until 2025. It seems that the regional economic development will lead to a significant economic revival. The following issues concerning the economic policy and its results have been chosen in order to conduct an analysis: GDP per capita, economic growth, demography, the input of nations and regions in the world’s production and the contribution of Australia in the world’s trade. The substantial number of inhabitants (over a half of the globe’s population) in this region is at the same time a serious proportion of consumers. The ongoing transformation in the life of those countries is the effect of education, communication and technology development. We generalize the periodic Strang-Fix conditions to an anisotropic setting and provide an upper bound for the error of interpolation.
