    Technology is one of the engines that drive the technological development of a country; it has generated changes in social schemes, specially, in the education of the engineering. In the education field, some teaching techniques have remained in traditional methods and not all people have adapted themselves to the change brought about by the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). That is why at the global level, projects have been developed to establish a closeness between these two important elements: Technology and Education in Engineering, through immersive and collaborative virtual environments. On the other hand, although researches and works related to the use of ICTs and immersive virtual environments in engineering education are found. They predominate in the implementation of different technologies without evaluating the effects they produce in the teaching of engineering and in a few other cases the technology is implemented and it is observed if the concept was acquired, but it is not evaluated what effects can exert on the individual in the development of skills or competences. Therefore, this research work is aimed at developing an immersive virtual environment that allows study the effects of ICT on the competences, in this case, the Electronic Engineer, through evaluations through technological tools, thereby promoting a change in the paradigm of the development of immersive virtual environments and its impact on the evaluation of skills in the training of future engineers.La tecnología es uno de los pilares que impulsa el desarrollo tecnológico de un país, ha generado cambios en los esquemas sociales, dentro de ellos, en la educación en ingeniería. En el sector educativo, algunas técnicas de enseñanza se han mantenido en los métodos tradicionales y no todos se han adaptado al cambio que acarrea el uso de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación, (TIC). Es por ello que a nivel mundial se han desarrollado proyectos encaminados a establecer una cercanía entre estos dos importantes elementos: la Tecnología y la Educación en Ingeniería, a través de ambientes virtuales inmersivos y colaborativos. Por otro lado, aun cuando se encuentran investigaciones y trabajos relacionados con el uso de las TIC y los entornos virtuales inmersivos en la educación en ingeniería, se observa que en éstos predominan la implementación de distintas tecnologías sin evaluar los efectos que producen en la enseñanza de ingeniería y en otros pocos casos se implementa la tecnología y se observa si se adquirió el concepto, pero no se evalúa que efectos pueden ejercer en el individuo en cuanto al desarrollo de habilidades o competencias. Por consiguiente, el presente trabajo de investigación está encaminado a desarrollar un entorno virtual inmersivo que permita estudiar los efectos de las TIC sobre las competencias, en este caso, del Ingeniero Electrónico, mediante evaluaciones a través de herramientas tecnológicas, promoviendo con ello un cambio en el paradigma del desarrollo de entornos virtuales inmersivos y su incidencia en la evaluación de competencias en la formación de los futuros ingenieros

    Achievement of generic and profesional competencies through virtual environments

    This study is aimed to prove how Virtual Environments (VE) and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can be used as a tool to verify professional competencies. The incursion of virtual environments in education has shown that there is much potential in distance learning development. To find out how it influences the achievement of competencies, there was made an experimental study with a post-test design and control group. Students were divided into two groups; each of them was submitted to a different test. The results demonstrate that with the implementation of VE using ICT, the students who used the VE had a better performance than students who used the traditional evaluations. Confirmed with the 83% of the sample who achieved the highest levels (50% got strategical professional competencies, and 33% got autonomous professional competencies). Considering the study, the authors could notice that students do develop professional competencies along virtual environments, reflected not only in the level of competence achieved by the ones tested on the virtual environment but also in the average time they spend to do the test. Therefore, virtual environments have positives effects in the education field

    Resource allocation model for a computer system

    This article describes a simulation for resource allocation. As a particular case, it describes how would be the assignment in an ad hoc network. We present the results of a simulation allocating resources from one system (communications network) to another system (agent collections). In the description of the model first shows the behavior of the allocation of resources towards the nodes depending on the usefulness of the network and the satisfaction of the agents. Based on the mathematical model of the tragedy of the commons, the behavior of the system is shown. The usefulness and satisfaction of the system are measured. Resource allocation is modeled as an interaction. The computational model Interaction Nets is used as the basis of the simulation

    The aim of REMIND is to create an International and Intersectoral network to facilitate the exchange of staff to progress developments in reminding technologies for persons with dementia that can be deployed in smart environments. The consortium is comprised of an International network of 7 academic beneficiaries, 5 nonacademic beneficiaries and 4 partners from Third Countries, all of whom are committed to progressing the notion of reminding technologies within smart environments. The focus of REMIND is to develop staff and beneficiary/partner skills in the areas of user centered design and behavioral science coupled with improved computational techniques which in turn will offer more appropriate and efficacious reminding solutions. This will be further supported through research involving user centric studies into the use of reminding technologies and the theory of behaviour change to improve compliance of usage. Research objectives will be focused within the domain of smart environments. A smart environment can be viewed as having the ability to sense its surroundings through embedded sensors and following processing of the sensed information, adjust the environment through actuators to offer an improved experience for the inhabitant. Even though the availability, cost, size and battery life of sensing technology have all improved in recent years, the uptake of real smart environments has been limited. This is mainly related to the effort required to support the technical deployments and the lack of a business model to support a service provider capable of offering support to a large number of environments.     Kaasasündinud N-glükosüülimise haigused Eestis

    Väitekirja elektrooniline versioon ei sisalda publikatsiooneKaasasündinud glükosüülimise haigused (KGH) moodustavad kiirelt areneva ainevahetushaiguste grupi ning on põhjustatud valkude ja lipiididega seotud glükaanide häirunud sünteesist. Erinevad valkude N-glükosüülimise haigused on enim diagnoositavad KGH-d ja PMM2-CDG on kõige sagedasem N-glükosüülimise haigus. KGH sümptomid on mittespetsiifilised ja multisüsteemsed. Valikmeetod KGH skriinimiseks on seerumi transferriini isoelektriline fokuseerimine (IEF). Käesoleva uuringu eesmärk oli juurutada Eestis KGH diagnostikaks transferriini IEF ja hinnata kolme aasta jooksul N-glükosüülimise haiguste esinemist meie patsientide hulgas. Kuuel patsiendil 1230-st esines KGH skriiningul positiivne tulemus, mis leidis molekulaarse kinnituse. Esmalt näitasime, et kõige sagedasem KGH Eestis on PMM2-CDG, mida diagnoositi neljal patsiendil kahest perekonnast. Ühe pere lastel väljendub haigus kerge neuroloogilise vormina, kuid normaalse kognitiivse arenguga, mida PMM2-CDG patsientide hulgas esineb harva. Eesti PMM2-CDG patsientidel oli kõige sagedasem variant PMM2 geenis p.Val131Met. Teiseks, esitasime tulemused PMM2-CDG eeldatava sageduse kohta, kasutades Tartu Ülikooli Eesti Geenivaramu andmeid. Leidsime viis erinevat PMM2 heterosügootset mutatsiooni. Kõige sagedasem geenivariant on p.Arg141His kandlussagedusega 1/224. p.Val131Met kandlussagedus on 1/449. Eeldatav PMM2-CDG sagedus Eestis on 1/77,000. Kolmandaks, kirjeldasime patsienti KGH alatüübiga SLC35A2-CDG ning võrdlesime tema fenotüüpi ja genotüüpi 14 rahvusvahelise patsiendi kliiniliste andmetega. Patsientidele on iseloomulik mittespetsiifiline neuroloogiline haigus üldise arengu hilistumise, lihashüpotoonia, krampide ning epileptilise entsefalopaatiaga, düsmorfsed tunnused ja lühike kasv. Lisaks võib transferriini IEF olla vale-negatiivne. Neljandaks, kirjeldasime multisüsteemsete kliiniliste sümptomitega ning uue, seni kirjeldamata KGH alatüübiga patsienti, kellel on KGH alatüübi põhjuseks tõenäoliselt haiguspõhjuslik homosügootne muutus STX5 geenis. Käesolev uuring näitas, et Eesti patsientide puhul on transferriini IEF on tulemuslik meetod KGH diagnostikas. Skriiningu rakendamine võimaldas lisada uusi kliinilisi ja epidemioloogilisi andmeid erinevate teadaolevate ning uue KGH alatüübi kohta.Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) are an expanding group of inherited metabolic diseases caused by impaired synthesis and attachment of glycans on proteins and lipids. Disorders affecting the N-glycosylation pathway form the most common CDG subgroup, and the most common N-glycosylation disorder is PMM2-CDG. The symptoms of different CDG are often non-specific and multisystem. Serum transferrin isoelectric focusing (Tf IEF) is a routine method to screen CDG. The aim of this study was to implement Tf IEF in Estonian clinical practice and to study the presence of N-glycosylation defects among Estonian patients in a three-year screening period. Altogether, positive CDG screening with subsequent molecular confirmation was detected in six patients among 1230 subjects screened. First, the most frequent CDG in Estonia is PMM2-CDG as we diagnosed this disorder in four patients from two families. In one family, the siblings show a mild neurological phenotype with normal-borderline cognitive development, which has previously been seldom described. Among PMM2-CDG patients, the most common variant in PMM2 gene is p.Val131Met. Second, we reported the expected frequency of PMM2-CDG based on the Estonian population data. In this cohort, we identified five different heterozygous variants in PMM2 gene. The most frequent variant is p.Arg141His with carrier frequency 1/224. The carrier frequency for p.Val131Met based on the Estonian population data is 1/449. The expected frequency of PMM2-CDG is 1/77,000. Third, we described a patient with SLC35A2-CDG and compared his phenotype-genotype with 14 international SLC35A2-CDG patients. This type of CDG presents as a non-specific neurological syndrome with global developmental delay, hypotonia, seizures and epileptic encephalopathy, together with dysmorphic features and short stature. In addition, Tf IEF can show a normal profile. Fourth, we presented a patient with multisystem clinical CDG features and a novel type II CDG likely caused by homozygous variant in STX5. In conclusion, Tf IEF proved to be an effective method to detect CDG among Estonian patients. Our results led to many findings, which have helped to add new clinical and epidemiological data about different known types of CDG, but also to expand the group of CDG by the discovery of a new type of CDG

    This paper named “Application of new monitoring tools that validates academic generic skills assessment in the Faculty of Engineering at Universidad de la Costa (CUC)” presents the progress achieved in the implementation of a new evaluation model that seeks the identification of features characteristic in students with the aim of strengthen the academic development of generic skills that currently is being evaluated by the ICFES in a transverse form in all academic programs. The initial diagnosis is obtained from the test on the previous period, in which are identified the skills at which the student must be strengthen into their academic level in order to make a feedback to the evaluation process and to validate that since the scope of the engineering faculty of the Universidad de la Costa (CUC), can focus on improving and applying these indicators enabling students to present such evidence to assess their academic competency.El presente documento titulado “Implementación de nuevas herramientas de seguimiento académico que valida la evaluación por competencias genéricas dentro de la facultad de ingeniería de la Universidad de la Costa (CUC)”, presenta los avances obtenidos en la implementación de un nuevo modelo de evaluación que busca identificar aspectos característicos dentro de los estudiantes para fortalecer la formación académica entorno al desarrollo por competencias genéricas que en la actualidad está evaluando el ICFES de manera transversal a todos los programas académicos. El diagnóstico inicial se obtiene de la prueba realizada el periodo anterior, en donde se identifican los puntos en los cuales el estudiante debe fortalecer su nivel académico a fin de hacer una realimentación al proceso de evaluación y validar si efectivamente la Universidad de la Costa desde el alcance de la facultad de ingeniería puede apuntar a mejorar estos indicadores aplicando y capacitando a los estudiantes a presentar este tipo de pruebas que valoran su desempeño académico por competencias

    Design of a monitoring network of meteorological variables related to tornadoes in Barranquilla-Colombia and its metropolitan area

    El presente trabajo muestra la incidencia de los tornados más representativos registrados desde el 1993 en el departamento del Atlántico ubicado al norte de Colombia que ha dejado grandes pérdidas materiales y económicas. Ante ello, se propone el diseño de un prototipo de sistema de monitorización de variables meteorológicas asociadas a la aparición de tornados en zonas donde se han presentado estos fenómenos atmosféricos para que los valores almacenados sirvan para su estudio y posterior predicción. Se emplea una red de sensores inalámbricos compuesta por cuatro nodos y un sumidero usando la plataforma Waspmote y módulos Xbee-PRO ZB (S2) para adquisición de datos y transmisión de la información. Se muestra la ubicación los nodos y la estabilidad de los datos obtenidos por los diferentes sensores del sistema.This paper shows the incidence of the most representative tornadoes since 1993 registered on the Atldntico's department, located in the north of Colombia; they have left thousands of material and economic losses. For this reason, it is proposed the design of a prototype system for monitoring meteorological variables associated with the occurrence of tornadoes in areas where they have occurred, to use the registered values in its study and following prediction. This system is based in a wireless sensor network, comprised of four sensor nodes and a sink node using the Waspmote platform and Xbee-PRO ZB (S2) modules for data acquisition and transmission respectively. The location of nodes and the stability of the data obtained by the different sensors in the system are also showed in the current work

    Recent trends in virtual education and its strong connection with the immersive environments

    El uso de las Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación (TIC), ha permitido mayor apropiación de herramientas que impactan los métodos de enseñanza y aprendizaje, como por ejemplo la implementación de entornos inmersivos. En este artículo se presenta un estudio acerca de las tendencias recientes de la educación virtual, primero realizando una revisión conceptual y seguidamente a través de un análisis basado en redes bibliometricos. Los resultados encontrados evidencian una fuerte conexión entre la educación y los entornos inmersivos, demostrando que este tipo de ambientes virtuales es una tendencia actual y futura en el ámbito educativoThe ICT use has allowed a broad appropriation of tools that impacts learning and teaching methods, such as the implementation of immersive environments.     Especialización en Estudios PedagógicosThe current workshop, entitled Rendimiento Académico del Ingeniero en Formación de la Universidad de la Costa frente a las Competencias de las Pruebas Saber Pro 2012 - 2013 (CUC), studied the academical behavior of the Engineering´s Faculty students, in function of their academical performance. For this purpose, an educational instrument was made to know the quantitatively level of basic and specific skills of engineering students, taking as sample students of the first, fifth and tenth semester. This instrument was performed under the standard developed by the State, the Saber Pro and Abet. Moreover, this workshop consists of seven chapters, divided into the introduction, followed by the problem statement, justification, objectives, framework, definition, methodology, analysis of results and conclusions, respectively. The authors wish that the present material is of pleasure to the reader, and also a basis for future research in the area.En el presente trabajo, titulado Rendimiento Académico del Ingeniero en Formación de la Universidad de la Costa frente a las Competencias de las Pruebas Saber Pro 2012 - 2013 (CUC), se realizó el estudio del comportamiento de académico de los estudiantes de la Facultad de Ingeniería, en virtud de su rendimiento. Para tal efecto, se elaboró un instrumento pedagógico que permitiera valorar cuantitativamente el nivel de ompetencias básicas y específicas de los estudiantes de Ingeniería, tomando como muestra a los jóvenes de primero, quinto y décimo semestre; éstas, se realizaron bajo el estándar de las pruebas de Estado, Saber Pro, y Abet. Así también, el presente consta de siete capítulos, los cuales están divididos en la parte introductoria, seguido del planteamiento del problema, justificación, objetivos, marco teórico, delimitación, metodología, análisis de resultados y conclusiones, de manera respectiva.
