    Since the Jesus Seminar has become almost iconic in religious media coverage, it merits academic scrutiny. This article focuses on the Seminar\u27s inaugural address given by founder Robert Funk on March 21, 1985, at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. In that address, Funk set forth the Seminar\u27s mission and method that has guided the association ever since. The main thesis of this article is that clues to the Seminar\u27s successes and failures may be found in Funk\u27s inaugural address, which may be uncovered through a text-in-context analysis of the speech

    Direct numerical simulations of turbulent convection with a variable gravity and Keplerian rotation

    Thermal convection was proposed as a possible mechanism for generation and maintenance of turbulence in the inner accretion disk regime of the primordial solar nebula. It is of fundamental interest to design experiments with the basic physical features of the solar nebula conditions cannot be produced in the laboratory, numerical simulations of hydrodynamic flows, which have been very successful in describing aerodynamic flows, can be suitable modified to provide experimental data for solar nebula modelling. The goals are to modify an extant, proven hydrodynamics code with the most important features of the solar nebula and other thin accretion disks: bouyancy terms to generate convection, internal heating representing the release of gravitational potential energy, a variable gravity linearly proportional the the distance from the vertical midplane due to centrifugal balance, rapid rotation with axis aligned with gravity, and Keplerian rotational shear; to determine the effect that these features have on the turbulent convection by introducing them individually and to determine the cumulative nature of the turbulent convection for accretion disk conditions; and to model the convection and the turbulence. In this manner, prior solar nebula models can be tested and their deficiencies rectified

    Numerical Implementation of a Critical State Model for Soft Rocks

    This paper details the basic tasks for the numerical implementation of a simple elasto-plastic critical state model for bonded materials (i.e. soft rocks-hard soils) into the finite element program SNAC developed at the University of Newcastle in Australia. The first task described focusses on the derivation of the incremental constitutive relationships used to represent the mechanical response of a bonded/cemented material under saturated conditions. The second task presents how these stress-strain relations can be numerically integrated using an explicit substepping scheme with automatic error control. The third task concentrates on the verification of the substepping algorithm proposed. The model used to represent the saturated mechanical response of a bonded material combines the modified Cam clay with the constitutive relationships for cemented materials proposed in Gens & Nova (1993), but incorporates some flexibility on the degradation law adopted. The role of suction and other relevant aspects of unsaturated behaviour are also discussed at the end of the paper

    Influence of Mechanical Yielding on Predictions of Saturation: The Saturation Line

    It is now well accepted that the mechanical and the water retention behaviour of a soil under unsaturated conditions are coupled and, that such coupling, should be incorporated into a constitutive model for a realistic representation of soil’s response. In existing models, the influence of the mechanical behaviour on the water retention is often represented by a shift of the main wetting retention curve to higher values of matric suction (the difference between pore air and pore water pressures) when the specific volume decreases. This means that any variation of total volumetric strains of compression (whether these are elastic or elasto-plastic) will result in a shift of the main wetting and drying curves to the right, when these curves are represented in the water retention plane. This shift of the main water retention curves, however, should not only influence the unsaturated stress states as often described in the literature, it should also have some impact on the saturated stress states and, more specifically, on the predictions of de-saturation (air-entry point) and saturation (air-exclusion point). From a modelling point of view, it is advantageous to represent this influence through the plastic component of volumetric strain of compression only because, in this way, a consistent representation of the mechanical behaviour for both unsaturated and saturated states can be naturally achieved. This and other advantages resulting from this singular approach are demonstrated in the paper in the context of the Glasgow Coupled Model (GCM)

    Toward Legalization of Poker: The Skill vs. Chance Debate

    This paper sheds light on the age-old argument as to whether poker is a game in which skill predominates over chance or vice versa. Recent work addressing the issue of skill vs. chance is reviewed. This current study considers two different scenarios to address the issue: 1) a mathematical analysis supported by computer simulations of one random player and one skilled player in Texas Hold\u27Em, and 2) full-table simulation games of Texas Hold\u27Em and Seven Card Stud. Findings for scenario 1 showed the skilled player winning 97 percent of the hands. Findings for scenario 2 further reinforced that highly skilled players convincingly beat unskilled players. Following this study that shows poker as predominantly a skill game, various gaming jurisdictions might declare poker as such, thus legalizing and broadening the game for new venues, new markets, new demographics, and new media. Internet gaming in particular could be expanded and released from its current illegality in the U.S. with benefits accruing to casinos who wish to offer online poker

    Transformation Techniques for OCL Constraints

    Constraints play a key role in the definition of conceptual schemas. In the UML, constraints are usually specified by means of invariants written in the OCL. However, due to the high expressiveness of the OCL, the designer has different syntactic alternatives to express each constraint. The techniques presented in this paper assist the designer during the definition of the constraints by means of generating equivalent alternatives for the initially defined ones. Moreover, in the context of the MDA, transformations between these different alternatives are required as part of the PIM-to-PIM, PIM-to-PSM or PIM-to-code transformations of the original conceptual schema
