Reports of Transpersonal Experiences by Non-Native Practitioners of the Native American Sweat Lodge Ceremony: A Critical Appraisal

    Get PDF
Interviews with 30 experienced non-native practitioners of the Native American sweat lodge ceremony revealed 184 reports of transpersonal experiences. Interview questions sought to (a) disclose how practitioners discern or critique their own experiences, (b) consider alternative explanations for practitioners’ experiences, and (c) critically reflect on the sweat lodge ceremony per se as a spiritual practice. It was found that practitioners generally (a) interpreted their experiences as trustworthy interactions with a spiritual reality, (b) did not seriously consider alternative explanations for their experiences, and (c) neglected to reflect critically on the sweat lodge ceremony per se as a spiritual practice

City of Kennesaw Cemetery: Preserving History

In 2007-2008, the City of Kennesaw received a grant from the United States Department of Natural Resources to begin underground imaging of their cemetery. The City contracted with Virtual Underground to do the imaging, plotting, and photography of headstones. The purpose of the underground imaging was to clarify where burials were made and in what section. Many of the burials in the cemetery were during the Civil War area when casual burial practices were employed. Since then, many of the cemetery lots have been sold to families to inter their deceased. To accurately identify the amount of space available to the families for safe burial, the City needed to elucidate by means of the underground imaging. Moreover, this being a historic cemetery, the Cemetery Preservation Committee wanted a photograph of each headstone to preserve its original order and catalog the history of the cemetery. After Virtual Underground commenced imaging, funds became unavailable to complete the plotting and photography on the entire cemetery. Virtual completed imaging on the entire cemetery, plotting, and photography on the older Sections A, and B. The purpose of my internship at the City of Kennesaw is to begin plotting and photography were Virtual Underground stopped. Furthermore, because of unsound recordkeeping in the past, the City is currently operating off three maps and two databases when selling cemetery lots. The completion of this project will allow the City Clerk’s Office to work off one map and one database. The expected benefits will save both personnel time and City funds

    Commentary: The Canadian Polar Commission

    Get PDF
... The Polar Commission was created by the federal government in September 1991. It was the result of two federal studies and much consultation with Canadian research institutions, universities and northern residents. Both reports were clear on the need for a Polar Commission. The mandate of the 12-member Board of Directors directs it to monitor and report on the state of knowledge in polar regions through a variety of means. The Commission also has the responsibility to help disseminate knowledge about polar regions, nationally and internationally, to work with northern and southern institutions fostering understanding about science and research in polar regions and to advise the federal government and others on northern issues. To the Commission itself that means ensuring that the scientific research carried out in polar regions is of the highest possible standards and at all times takes into account the concerns and interests of the northern peoples. ... A priority of the Polar Commission will be to ... develop a plan to encourage northern involvement and participation in research activities in the northern regions. Hand in hand with that, the Commission would like to see the use of traditional knowledge expanded. We believe that it is important that all Canadians and all northerners recognize the tremendous benefit indigenous knowledge can play in northern research in many areas, including health, social issues and justice. We also think that there should be initiatives with northern communities to develop methods for recording, disseminating and using traditional knowledge. The Board of Directors also wants to enhance academic study on northern regions. We would like to see scholarly study on important northern issues in law, politics, economics and the natural and applied sciences increased. In addition, we see the need for more interdisciplinary study. We hope to either encourage institutions to develop journals to record and distribute this material or identify journals that are already in existence and encourage them to expand into broader areas of scholarly study. These two initiatives are given to show the breadth of what constitutes science in northern regions
