Uncivilising the future : imagining non-speciesism

We live in a world where animals are killed and abused in numbers that are entirely beyond comprehension. This killing is ubiquitous and omnipresent, and yet largely invisible to most people. Once we come to the realisation that the normalisation of animal oppression is something that we oppose, envisioning futures that abandon “speciesism” requires an almost unimaginable rethinking of our current society. Yet, resistance and alternative practices do exist. These forces consist of alternative opinions, attitudes, practices, senses, meanings, and values which are not considered to be the norm; however, these can somehow still be accommodated and tolerated within a particularly effective and dominant culture. In this modest approach towards non-speciesist utopias that invites serious moral consideration of animals as the most marginalised beings of all, I aim to bring those under-emphasised, hidden, and alternative perspectives to light in order to make them more valid and more real as practices that counter hegemony. By paying attention to existing philosophies, personal experiences, emotional accounts, and shared thoughts, this text highlights alternatives and possibilities for artists (or others) to imagine and shape futures that are utopian—not just for humans, but for animals as well.peer-reviewe

Banjar Laba Nangga, Identifying Stakeholders for Cultural Heritage Management at a Prehistoric Site in North Bali

Cultural Heritage Management (CHM) defines how stakeholders should deal with their inheritance, whether coming directly from their bloodline, or give by ancestors 2000 years ago. To be able to understand the implications of cultural heritage management one must identify the different stakeholders. In this article a description is given of this process of identifying and all the issues that may rise while identifying stakeholders. Values, beliefs and traditions of different stakeholders and subsequently with different interests get mixed with emotions. This subsequently leads to a loss of scientific research and a just interpretation of what has been found, as in the described case study of Banjar Laba Nangga

This article deals with the phenomenon of orphanage tourism in Bali, Indonesia. Context is given based on a recent published report by the Dutch government on the impact of orphanage tourism. Findings are derived from larger-scale qualitative research based on child welfare institutions in Bali, Indonesia (50 children, 16 familial caregivers) between 2015 and 2020. Two axial codes (forced attendance and suspicion) of this research are used in this article. Deductions are based on recent literature, prior research and findings. The conclusion of this article is that children in Bali should not be institutionalised for the sake of poverty or education and that a continuous flow of tourists visiting and donating to child welfare institutions means that children have become commodities for such institutions, causing a plethora of problems for children living in these institutions.
